The Word of God

Author: Clara M. Brooks Meter: 9.9.11.7.6.5.9.6.5.7 Appears in 5 hymnals First Line: By the word of God the worlds were made Refrain First Line: Oh, the precious Bible Lyrics: 1 By the word of God the worlds were made, And are held in place by His commands; All the grasses wither and the flowers fade, But His truth forever stands. Refrain: Oh, the precious Bible, Counsel for the soul, Path the faithful saints and martyrs trod; Settled in the heavens, True while ages roll, Changeless as the throne of God. 2 More to be desired than honey sweet, Richer are its treasures, far, than gold; Like a brilliant light, it shines to guide my feet, Never grows its story old. [Refrain] 3 Thy eternal law is my delight, Strength and daily manna to my soul; ’Tis my meditation all the day and night, Balm to make the wounded whole. [Refrain] 4 Stream of life from heaven, crystal pure, Shed thy cooling freshness over me; Let my thirsting spirit, till I thirst no more, Drink thy sparkling waters free. [Refrain] Topics: Bible/Word Scripture: Psalm 119:89 Used With Tune: [By the word of God the worlds were made] Text Sources: Timeless Truths (http://library.timelesstruths.org/music/The_Word_of_God); The Gospel Trumpet Company, Hymnal of the Church of God, 1953 (112); Faith Publishing House, Evening Light Songs, 1949, edited 1987 (332); The Gospel Trumpet Company,

Clara McAlister Brooks

1882 - 1980 Person Name: Clara M. Brooks Author of "The Word of God" in Timeless Truths Birth: Oct. 9, 1882, Parke County, Indiana, USA Death: Mar. 20, 1980, Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida, USA Clara McAlister Brooks was one of our early songwriters and four of her pieces are in the current hymnal. From the earliest days of the movement we have had women prominent in all forms of our ministry—missionaries, evangelists, teachers, pastors, and God has honored their sacrificial labors. For that reason we can stand in amazement when here, in the 1970s, such old-line denominations as the Episcopal church are being racked with controversy over whether the ordination of women is permissible. But before we gather Pharisaic robes about ourselves, perhaps we need to look candidly at the way in which we, too, succumbed to some of the cultural and prejudicial patterns of later decades! --www.whwomenclergy.org/articles/
