Texas, 1933) is a prolific composer, arranger, clinician, teacher and promoter of congregational song, with more than 1300 published works, especially of hymn and psalm arrangements, choir anthems, and creative ideas for choral and organ music in worship. Born in Texas, with degrees from Baylor University (BA, 1954), and Southern Baptist Seminary (MSM, 1956), he served churches in Nashville, TN, and most recently at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas. He has served on national boards of the Presbyterian Association of Musicians and the Choristers Guild, and taught numerous workshops at various national conferences. In 2009, a collection of sixty four of his hymn tunes were published in Hymns for Our Time: The Collected Tunes of Hal H. Hopson. Emily Brink

Jane Marshall

She became a pianist and organist and composed music as a teenager. She earned a music degree in 1945 from SMU. She married Elbert Marshall. She went on to write more than 200 hymns and other sacred music works. She later earned a Masters degree in 1968 from SMU in choral conducting and composition. She taught at SMU's Perkins School of Theology and tis Church Music Summer School from 1975-2010. She attended Northaven United Methodist Church in Dallas for many years, collaborated often with other hymn writers, and encouraged many students. Scotland, c. 1840; d. Liverpool, England, 1925), was a healer, mystic, and poet known simply as Brother James. The tune BROTHER JAMES AIR was first published in his volume The great peace: being a New Year's greeting ... (1915). Born in a devout Christian home, Bain came to doubt the faith but later regained a mystical belief with the aid of the Christo Theosophic Society. He founded the Brotherhood of Healers, and he and his fellow healers often sang to their patients during healing sessions. Richard K. Avery

You are the church!" in Together in Song Rv Richard Kinsey Avery USA 1934-2020Born in the Central Valley of CA, he attended schools at Exeter, CA, where his family was active in the First Presbyterian Church. He decided to become a Christian minister at age 14 while at a Presbyterian youth conference. He attended Redlands U, Redlands, CA. He then attended Union Theological Seminary, NYC. He participated in the University Choir and associated with Christian friends there. He became pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Port Jervis, NY, (FPCPJ) for 40 years. Musically inclined, he composed a variety of songs (both lyrics and music), mostly with his close friend, Rv Donald S Marsh. Avery was commentator, preacher, and song leader for the duo, while Marsh conducted drama events and conducted three choirs. Together, they wrote over 150 published hymns, carols, and anthems. In 1967 the two founded Proclamation Productions, with sales later handled by Hope Publishing Company. With Marsh, he led conference and church assemblies in new forms of worship in all 50 states from the late 1960s into the early 2000s. These events included 30 years of summer seminars at Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, NM. At Port Jervis, NY, Avery founded a community center for poor people called the ‘Hope Center’. He was also a member of and chairman of the board of directors of Mercy Community Hospital. His church, FPCPJ, was a prominent center for creative forms of worship, music, and drama, providing many concerts and theatrical events for the community. He was also involved with Westminster Presbyterian Church in Santa Fe, where he served as music leader after retirement from the NY church. In 2003 he founded a small magazine, ‘Santa Fe Theologians’, serving as editor, and later, as manager of Santa Fe Theologians Institutes, which held public forums on contemporary issues. He was also a member of the World Affairs Forum, the Council on International Relations, the Santa Fe Symposium, and the Coro de Camara chorale ensemble. Martin Shaw

Shaw was educated at the Royal College of Music in London and was organist and choirmaster at St. Mary's, Primrose Hill (1908-1920), St. Martin's in the Fields (1920-1924), and the Eccleston Guild House (1924-1935). From 1935 to 1945 he served as music director for the diocese of Chelmsford. He established the Purcell Operatic Society and was a founder of the Plainsong and Medieval Society and what later became the Royal Society of Church Music. Author of The Principles of English Church Music Composition (1921), Shaw was a notable reformer of English church music. He worked with Percy Dearmer (his rector at St. Mary's in Primrose Hill); Ralph Vaughan Williams, and his brother Geoffrey Shaw in publishing hymnals such as Songs of Praise (1925, 1931) and the Oxford Book of Carols (1928). A leader in the revival of English opera and folk music scholarship, Shaw composed some one hundred songs as well as anthems and service music; some of his best hymn tunes were published in his Additional Tunes in Use at St. Mary's (1915).
