1855 - 1932 Person Name: Somerset Corry Lowry, 1855-1932 Scripture: Matthew 27:39-46 Author of "A man there lived in Galilee" in Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New Lowry, Somerset Corry, M.A., son of James Corry Lowry, Q.C., of Rockdale, Dungannon, Ireland, b. in 1855, and educated at Repton and Trin. Hall, Camb., B.A. 1877, M.A. 1880. Ordained in 1879 to the Curacy of Doncaster. Subsequently Vicar of North Holmwood, Surrey, 1891-1900, and of St. Augustin's, Bournemouth, from 1900. He has published The Work of the Holy Spirit, 1894; Convalescence, 1897; Lessons from the Passion, 1899, &c. His hymns include:— 1. Behold, Lord! how the nations rage, [In Time of War.] Written "For Use during the War between Russia and Japan," in 1904, and printed as a leaflet by Jarvis & Co., Bournemouth. 2. Lord, while afar our brothers fight. [In Time of War.] Written at Holmwood, Surrey, in 1899, after the reverse of Colenso, and extensively used during the S. African War. Given in the 1904 ed. of Hymns Ancient & Modern. 3. 0 Saviour, once again the ebbing year. [For a Memorial Service.] Written at Holmwood, in 1898, for Queen Victoria's annual Service in memory of the Prince Consort. Included in Hymns of the Christ. Centuries, 1903. 4. 0 Son of God, enthroned above. [Advent] Written at Holmwood, in 1892, and given in M. Woodward's Children's Service Book, 1897. 5. Pressing forward. [Processional.] Also in Woodward's Children's Service Book, 1897. Written at Bournemouth, in 1888. 6. Son of God, Eternal Saviour. [For Unity.] Written at Holmwood, in 1893 ; printed in Goodwill, Feb. 1894, and included in the 1904 ed. of Hymns Ancient & Modern. 7. We meet as we have never met before. Lydia Baxter

1809 - 1874 Scripture: Matthew 27:35-51 Author of "Mirad al Salvador Jesús" in Celebremos Su Gloria Baxter, Lydia, an American Baptist, was b. at Petersburg, N. York, Sep. 2, 1800, married to Mr. Baxter, and d. in N. Y. June 22, 1874. In addition to her Gems by the Wayside, 1855, Mrs. Baxter contributed many hymns to collections for Sunday Schools, and Evangelistic Services. Of these, the following are the best known:— 1. Cast thy net again, my brother. Patient toil. Given in the Royal Diadem, N. Y., 1873. 2. Go, work in my vineyard. Duty. Also given in the Royal Diadem, 1873, and Mr. Sankey's S. & Solos, No. 4. 3. I'm kneeling, Lord, at mercy's gate. Lent. In Coronation Hymns, &c, N. Y., 1879. 4. I'm weary, I'm fainting, my day's work is done. Longing for rest. Royal Diadem. 1873. 5. In the fadeless spring-time. Heavenly Reunion. In the Royal Diadem, 1873, I. D. Sankey's S. S. & Solos, No. 256, and others. It was written for Mr. H. P. Main in 1872. 6. One by one we cross the river. Death. In Songs of Salvation, N. Y., 1870, I. D. Sankey's S. S. & Solos, No. 357, &c. It dates cir. 1866. 7. Take the name of Jesus with you. Name of Jesus. Written late in 1870, or early in 1871, for W. H. Doane, and pub. in Pure Gold, 1871. It is No. 148 of I. D. Sankey's S. S. & Solos. 8. The Master is coming. Invitation. In Songs of Salvation, 1870, No. 38. 9. There is a gate that stands ajar. Mercy. In New Hallowed Songs, and also the Gospel Songs of P. Bliss, 1874. It was written for S. J. Vail about 1872. S. J. Vail

1818 - 1883 Person Name: Silas Jones Vail Scripture: Matthew 27:35-51 Composer of "GATE AJAR" in Celebremos Su Gloria In his youth Silas Jones Vail learned the hatter's trade at Danbury, Ct. While still a young man, he went to New York and took employment in the fashionable hat store of William H. Beebe. Later he established himself in business as a hatter at 118 Fulton Street, where he was for many years successful. But the conditions of trade changed, and he could not change with them. After his failure in 1869 or 1870 he devoted his entire time and attention to music. He was the writer of much popular music for use in churches and Sunday schools. Pieces of music entitled "Scatter Seeds of Kindness," "Gates Ajar," "Close to Thee," "We Shall Sleep, but not Forever," and "Nothing but Leaves" were known to all church attendants twenty years ago. Fanny Crosby, the blind authoress, wrote expressly for him many of the verses he set to music. --Vail, Henry H. (Henry Hobart). Sydney H. Nicholson

1875 - 1947 Person Name: S. H. Nicholson, 1875-1947 Scripture: Matthew 27:47-56 Arranger of "FELIX" in Common Praise Sydney H. Nicholson, (b. St. Marylebone, London, England, 1875; d. Ashford, Kent, England, 1947) was an organist and church music educator who greatly influenced English hymnody. Educated at Oxford's New College, the Royal College of Music in London, and in Frankfurt, Germany, he became organist at several famous cathedrals, including Westminster Abbey (1919-1928). Nicholson founded and administered the School of English Church Music at Chislehurst in 1927; this important institution, with branches throughout the English-speaking world, was renamed the Royal School of Church Music in 1945. Located in Canterbury after World War II, its headquarters were moved to Addington Palace, Croydon, in 1954. Nicholson was music adviser for the 1916 Supplement of Hymns Ancient and Modern and prepared the way for its 1950 edition. He wrote Church Music: a Practical Handbook (1920) and Quires and Places Where They Sing (1932) and composed operettas, anthems, and hymn tunes.
