Psalm 90 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1,240 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 90:1-5 First Line: Our God, our help in ages past Lyrics: Our God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home. Under the shadow of thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is thine arm alone, And our defence is sure. Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame, From everlasting thou art God, To endless years the same. Thy word commands our flesh to dust, "Return, ye sons of men:" All nations rose from earth at first, And turn to earth again. A thousand ages in thy sight Are like an evening gone; Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun. [The busy tribes of flesh and blood, With all their lives and cares, Are carried downwards by the flood, And lost in following years. Time, like an ever-rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly, forgotten, as a dream Dies at the op'ning day. Like flowery fields the nations stand Pleased with the morning light; The flowers beneath the mower's hand Lie with'ring ere 'tis night.] Our God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Be thou our guard while troubles last, And our eternal home. Topics: Funeral psalm; Man his vanity as mortal; Mortality of man; Saints rewarded at last; Frailty of man; Life short and feeble; Psalm for a funeral; Death the effect of sin; God eternal, and man mortal; Mortality and God's eternity; Old age death

Psalm 90

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 160 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 90 First Line: Through every age, eternal God Lyrics: Through every age, eternal God, Thou art our rest, our safe abode; High was thy throne ere heav'n was made, Or earth thy humble footstool laid. Long hadst thou reigned ere time began, Or dust was fashioned to a man; And long thy kingdom shall endure When earth and time shall be no more. But man, weak man, is born to die, Made up of guilt and vanity; Thy dreadful sentence, Lord, was just, "Return, ye sinners, to your dust." [A thousand of our years amount Scarce to a day in thine account; Like yesterday's departed light, Or the last watch of ending night. Death, like an overflowing stream, Sweeps us away; our life's a dream, An empty tale, a morning flower, Cut down and withered in an hour.] [Our age to seventy years is set; How short the time! how frail the state! And if to eighty we arrive, We rather sigh and groan than live. But O how oft thy wrath appears, And cuts off our expected years! Thy wrath awakes our humble dread; We fear the power that strikes us dead.] Teach us, O Lord, how frail is man; And kindly lengthen out our span, Till a wise care of piety Fit us to die, and dwell with thee.

Psalm 90

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 164 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 90:5 First Line: Lord, what a feeble piece Lyrics: Lord, what a feeble piece Is this our mortal frame! Our life how poor a trifle 'tis, That scarce deserves the name! Alas, the brittle clay That built our body first! And every month, and every day, 'Tis mould'ring back to dust. Our moments fly apace, Nor will our minutes stay; Just like a flood, our hasty days Are sweeping us away. Well, if our days must fly, We'll keep their end in sight; We'll spend them all in wisdom's way, And let them speed their flight. They'll waft us sooner o'er This life's tempestuous sea; Soon we shall reach the peaceful shore Of blest eternity.

O God, the Rock of Ages

Author: Edward H. Bickersteth Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 201 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 90 First Line: O, God the Rock of Ages Lyrics: 1 O God, the Rock of Ages, who evermore hast been, what time the tempest rages, our dwelling place serene: before thy first creations, O Lord, the same as now, to endless generations the Everlasting Thou! 2 Our years are like the shadows on sunny hills that lie, or grasses in the meadows that blossom but to die; a sleep, a dream, a story by strangers quickly told, and unremaining glory of things that soon are old. 3 O thou who canst not slumber, whose light grows never pale, teach us aright to number our years before they fail; on us thy mercy lighten, on us thy goodness rest, and let thy Spirit brighten the hearts thyself hast blessed. 4 Lord, crown our faith's endeavor with beauty and with grace, till, clothed in light forever, we see thee face to face: a joy no language measures; a fountain brimming o'er; an endless flow of pleasures; an ocean without shore. Psalm 90: Lord, thou hast been our dwelling-place

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 27 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 90 First Line: Lord, thou hast been our dwelling-place Lyrics: Lord, thou hast been our dwelling-place in generations all. Before thou ever hadst brought forth the mountains great or small; Ere ever thou hadst form’d the earth, and all the world abroad; Ev’n thou from everlasting art to everlasting God. Thou dost unto destruction man that is mortal turn; And unto them thou say’st, Again, ye sons of men, return. Because a thousand years appear no more before thy sight Than yesterday, when it is past, or than a watch by night. As with an overflowing flood thou carry’st them away: They like a sleep are, like the grass that grows at morn are they. At morn it flourishes and grows, cut down at ev’n doth fade. For by thine anger we’re consum’d, thy wrath makes us afraid. Our sins thou and iniquities dost in thy presence place, And sett’st our secret faults before the brightness of thy face. For in thine anger all our days do pass on to an end; And as a tale that hath been told, so we our years do spend. Threescore and ten years do sum up our days and years, we see; Or, if, by reason of more strength, in some fourscore they be: Yet doth the strength of such old men but grief and labour prove; For it is soon cut off, and we fly hence, and soon remove. Who knows the power of thy wrath? according to thy fear So is thy wrath: Lord, teach thou us our end in mind to bear; And so to count our days, that we our hearts may still apply To learn thy wisdom and thy truth, that we may live thereby. Turn yet again to us, O Lord, how long thus shall it be? Let it repent thee now for those that servants are to thee. O with thy tender mercies, Lord, us early satisfy; So we rejoice shall all our days, and still be glad in thee. According as the days have been, wherein we grief have had, And years wherein we ill have seen, so do thou make us glad. O let thy work and pow’r appear thy servants’ face before; And shew unto their children dear thy glory evermore: And let the beauty of the Lord our God be us upon: Our handy-works establish thou, establish them each one.

O Lord, the Saviour and Defence

Appears in 25 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 90 Lyrics: 1 O Lord, the Saviour and Defence of us thy chosen Race, From Age to Age thou still hast been our sure abiding Place. 2 Before thou brought'st the Mountains forth, or th' Earth and World didst frame, Thou always wert the mighty God, and ever art the same. 3 Thou turnest Man, O Lord, to Dust, of which he first was made; And when thou speak'st the Word, Return, 'tis instantly obey'd. 4 For in thy Sight, a thousand Years are like a Day that's past, Or like a Watch in Dead of Night, whose Hours unminded waste. 5 Thou sweep'st us off as with a Flood, we vanish hence like Dreams; At first we grow like Grass that feels the sun's reviving Beams: 6 But howsoever fresh and fair its Morning Beauty shows; 'Tis all cut down and wither'd quite before the Ev'ning close. 7,8 We by thine Anger are consum'd, and by thy Wrath dismay'd; Our publick Crimes and secret Sins before thy Sight are laid. 9 Beneath thy Anger's sad Effects our drooping Days we spend; Our unregarded Years break off, like Tales that quickly end. 10 Our Term of Time is Seventy years, an Age that few survive; But if, with more than common Strength, to Eighty we arrive; Yet then our boasted Strength decays, to Sorrow turn'd and Pain; So soon the slender Thread is cut, and we no more remain. Part II 11 But who thy Anger's dread Effects does, as he ought, revere? And yet thy Wrath does fall or rise, as more or less we fear. 12 So teach us, Lord, th' uncertain sum of our short Days to mind, That to true Wisdom all our Hearts may ever be inclin'd. 13 O to thy Servants, Lord, return, and speedily relent! As we of our Misdeeds, do thou of our just Doom repent. 14 To satisfy and chear our Souls, thy early Mercy send; That we may all our Days to come, in Joy and Comfort spend. 15 Let happy Times with large Amends dry up our former Tears, Or equal at the least the Term of our afflicted Years. 16 To all thy Servants, Lord, let this thy wond'rous Work be known, And to our Offspring yet unborn, thy glorious Pow'r be shown. 17 Let thy bright Rays upon us shine, give thou our Work Success; The glorious Work we have in hand do thou vouchsafe to bless.

A thousand years, how swift they fly, Like one short silent watch of night! 4 Uncertain life, how soon it flies! Dream of an hour, how short our bloom! Like spring's gay verdure now we rise, Cut down ere night to fill the tomb. 5 Teach us to count our short'ning days, And with true diligence apply Our hearts to wisdom's sacred ways, That we may learn to live and die. Lord, if thine eyes survey our faults

Appears in 51 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 90 Lyrics: 1 Lord if thine Eyes surveys our Faults, And Justice grows severe, Thy dreadful Wrath exceeds our Thoughts, And burns beyond our Fear. 2 Thine Anger turns our Frame to Dust: By one Offence to thee Adam with all his Sons have lost Their Immortality. 3 Life like a vain Amusement, flies, A Fable or a Song; By swift Degrees our Nature dies, Nor can our Joys be long. 4 'Tis but a few whose Days amount To three score Years and ten; And all beyond that short Account Is sorrow, Toil and Pain. 5 Almighty God, reveal thy Love, And not thy Wrath alone! O let our sweet Experience prove The Mercies of thy Throne. 6 Our Souls wou'd learn the heav'nly Art T' improve the Hours we have, That we may act the wiser Part, And live beyond the Grave.

Refrain: I’m at home, blessed home, I am safe in the bosom Divine; Oh, the home of the soul, Thy heaven of glory is mine. 2 He that dwelleth in love ever dwelleth in God, Sweet home never clouded by fears; And this heaven of love is our native abode Through time and eternity’s years. [Refrain] 3 We are only at home in the bosom of God, On earth or in heaven above; Everyone who would enter must pass through the blood, And reign in the kingdom of love. [Refrain] 4 Do not venture the hope that is waiting for death To waft you to comfort and peace; There’s no rest for a soul, in this world or above, Not saved in the Father’s embrace. [Refrain] 5 We will enter no door that is opened by men Who promise a home for the soul; For in Christ we abide in the church that will stand While ages eternally roll. Lord, Thou hast been Thy people's rest

Author: James Montgomery Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 14 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 90 Lyrics: Lord, Thou hast been Thy people's rest, Through all their generations; Their refuge when by troubles prest, Their hope in tribulations: Thou, ere the mountains sprang to birth, Or ever Thou hadst form'd the earth, Art God from everlasting. Our life is like the transient breath, That tells a mournful story; Early or late, stopt short by death;-- And where is all our glory? Our days are threescore years and ten, And if the span be lengthened then, Their strength is toil and sorrow. Lo Thou hast set before Thine eyes All our misdeeds and errors; Our secret sins from darkness rise At Thine awakening terrors: Who shall abide the trying hour? Who knows the thunder of Thy power? We flee unto Thy mercy. 50 Lord, teach us so to mark our days, That we may prize them duly; So guide our feet in Wisdom's ways, That we may love Thee truly: Return, O Lord! our griefs behold, And with Thy goodness, as of old, O satisfy us early. Domine refugium

Author: J. H. As yesterday it doth appeare, or as a watch by night. 5 So soone as thou dost scatter them, then is their life and trade All as asleepe, and like the grasse, whose beauty soon doth fade. 6 Which in the morning shines full bright but fadeth by and by: And is cut down ere it be night, all withered, dead, and drie. 7 For through thine anger we consume, our might is much decaid: And of thy fervent wrath and fume we are full sore afraid. 8 The wicked works that we have wrought thou setst before thine eye: Our privy faults, yea, eke our thoughts thy countenance doth spie. 9 For through thy wrath our daies do wast, thereof doth nought remaine: Our yeares consume as words or blsts, and are not cal'd againe. 10 Our time is threescore yeares and ten, That we do live on mold: If one see fourscore, surely then, we count him wondrous old. The second Part: 11 Yet of this time the strength and chief the which we count upon, Is nothing els but painefull griefe, and we as blasts are gone. 12 Who once doth know what strength is there what might thine anger hath: Or in his heart who doth thee feare according to thy wrath? 13 Instruct us Lord to know and try, how long our daies remaine: That then we may our hearts apply, true wisdome to attaine. 14 Returne, O Lord, how long wilt thou forth on thy wrath proceed? Shew favour to thy servants now, and help them at their need. 15 Refresh us with thy mercy soone, then shall we joyful be, All times so long as life doth last, in heart rejoyce will we. 16 As thou hast plagued us before, now also make us glad: And for the yeares wherein full sore affliction we have had. 17 O let thy work and power appeare, and on thy servants light: And shew unto thy children deare, thy glory and thy might. 18 Lord, let thy grace and glory stand on us thy servants thus: Confirme the works we take in hand, Lord prosper them to us.

A Prayer of Moses, the Man of GOD

Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 90 First Line: Lord, Thou hast been our dwelling place Lyrics: 1 Lord, Thou hast been our dwelling place, our refuge and defence, In all the generations past, and still our confidence. 2 Before the mountains Thou didst form, or earth, and world abroad, Thou ev'n from everlasting art to everlasting, God. 3 Thou to destruction dost reduce frail, miserable men; And to all Adam's sons Thou say'st, return ye back again. 4 For ev'n a thousand years appear no more before thy sight, Than yesterday that now is past, or than a watch by night. 5 Thou dost them bear away as with a flood that overflows: Like sheep they are; and as the grass, which in the morning grows; 6 Which in the morning flourishes, but soon its beauty flies; When evening comes 'tis all cut down, and withers up and dies. 7 For by thy fiery anger we consumed are away; And troubled by thy burning wrath, we hastily decay. 8 Thou dost our open trespasses, before thy presence place; And ev'n our secret sins before the brightness of thy face. 9 For in thine anger all our days away are quickly roll'd; And all our years we waste away, like a short tale soon told. 10 For therefore years and ten the days of our short life may be: Or if by reason of more strength, we fourscore years may see; Yet is this lengthning out but sin, toil, grief and vanity; And then 'tis speedily cut off, and swift away we fly. 11 O who is he that fully knows what power thine anger hath? Or who can fully comprehend the terror of thy wrath? 12 O teach Thou us effectually, to number so our days, As that our hearts we may apply to walk in wisdom's ways. 13 JEHOVAH, turn thy self again; how long yet shall it be? E're thou repent and comfort them who servants are to Thee? 14 O satisfy us early with thy free benignity; That so thro' all our days we may joy and make melody. 15 According to the days wherein, affliction we have had; And years of evil we have seen, now do thou make us glad. 16 O to thy servants, let thy work, thy glorious work appear; And show thy glory forth to those who their dear children are. 17 The kindness of the LORD our God, let on us ever shine; Confirm our handy work for us, establish it by thine.
