George Nelson Allen

1812 - 1877 Person Name: George N. Allen Author of "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" in With One Voice George Nelson Allen (1812-1871), studied at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Oh OH and with Lowell Mason in Boston. Allen gave a strong musical foundation to Oberlin College in its earliest years; in addition to being Professor of Music he also served as Professor of Geology and Natural History, Secretary and Treasurer. In 1835 he compiled The Oberlin Social and Sabbath Hymn Book, in which appeared his most well known tune MAITLAND (also known as CROSS AND CROWN or WESTERN MELODY) with the text "Must Jesus bear the cross alone?". This was adapted by Thomas A. Dorsey in 1938 for his hymn "Precious Lord, take my hand". hand." He composed anthems and wrote some additional music for Isaac Woodbury's Oratorio "Absalom." R. E. Winsett

1876 - 1952 Harmonizer (mixed quartet) of "[When my way groweth drear, precious Lord linger near]" in Church Hymnal Robert Emmett Winsett (January 15, 1876 — June 26, 1952 (aged 76) was an American composer and publisher of Gospel music. Winsett was born in Bledsoe County, Tennessee, and graduated from the Bowman Normal School of Music in 1899. He founded his own publishing company in 1903, and his first publication, Winsett's Favorite Songs, quickly became popular among the Baptist and Pentecostal churches of the American South. Pentecostal Power followed in 1907; that year Winsett completed postgraduate work at a conservatory. He married Birdie Harris in 1908, and had three sons and two daughters with her. He settled in Fort Smith, Arkansas, continuing to compose gospel songs, of which he would write over 1,000 in total. He became a minister in 1923, and was affiliated with the Church of God (Seventh Day). Birdie Harris died late in the 1920s, and shortly thereafter Winsett moved back to Tennessee. He founded a new company in Chattanooga, and published more shape note music books. He remarried, to Mary Ruth Edmonton, in 1930, and had three further children. Winsett's final publication, Best of All (1951), sold over 1 million copies, and in total his books sold over ten million copies. His song "Jesus Is Coming Soon" won a Dove Award for Gospel Song of the Year at the 1969 awards. He has been inducted into the Southern Gospel Museum and Hall of Fame. --www.wikipedia.org

Thomas Andrew Dorsey

1899 - 1993 Person Name: Thomas A. Dorsey Author of "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" in Psalter Hymnal (Gray) Thomas Andrew Dorsey was born in Villa Rica, a small rural town near Atlanta, Georgia. In 1919 he moved to Chicago. Most of his musical training was in the church, but he also studied and played jazz and blues. He later combined jazz and blues with religious texts, giving birth to gospel music. In 1931, along with Magnolia Lewis-Butts and Theodore Roosevelt Frye, he established the first gospel choir at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Chicago. He went on to lead the gospel choir at Pilgrim Baptist Church, which he led for 60 years. Dorsey was also instrumental in founding the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses (NCGCC) in 1933. The convention taught choirs all over the country how to sing gospel music. George Lockwood

b. 1946 Person Name: George Lockwood, b. 1946 Translator of "Precious Lord, Take My Hand (Mi Señor, guíame)" in Santo, Santo, Santo Rev. George Lockwood was born in 1946 and has been a missionary to Costa Rica. He has pastored Spanish-speaking congregations in both Arizona and California and served on the editorial committee for the Methodist hymnal supplement Celebremos II. In addition, Lockwood has traveled throughout Central and South America interviewing church musicians and gathering new hymns from both Spanish and Portuguese cultures which he then presents at conferences and workshops. Deas (unknown – 1944) was a hymnist, arranger of spirituals, music publisher, and music authority for the AME Church. Deas’s hymns, such as “Big Business in Glory” (1921) and “Shine for Jesus” (1925), reflect the simplicity and usage of common language characteristic of the 19th-century revival hymn.
