William F. Sherwin

1826 - 1888 Person Name: W. F. S. Composer of "[Three in One and One in three]" in Heart and Voice Sherwin, William Fisk, an American Baptist, was born at Buckland, Massachusetts, March 14,1826. His educational opportunities, so far as schools were concerned, were few, but he made excellent use of his time and surroundings. At fifteen he went to Boston and studied music under Dr. Mason: In due course he became a teacher of vocal music, and held several important appointments in Massachusetts; in Hudson and Albany, New York County, and then in New York City. Taking special interest in Sunday Schools, he composed carols and hymn-tunes largely for their use, and was associated with the Rev. R. Lowry and others in preparing Bright Jewels, and other popular Sunday School hymn and tune books. A few of his melodies are known in Great Britain through I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, where they are given with his signature. His hymnwriting was limited. The following pieces are in common use:— 1. Grander than ocean's story (1871). The Love of God. 2. Hark, bark, the merry Christmas bells. Christmas Carol. 3. Lo, the day of God is breaking. The Spiritual Warfare. 4. Wake the song of joy and gladness. Sunday School or Temperance Anniversary. 5. Why is thy faith, 0 Child of God, so small. Safety in Jesus. S. M. Bixby

1833 - 1912 Composer of "RORISON" in Gloria Deo Samuel M. Bixby was born on May 27, 1833 in Haverhill, New Hampshire. His company, S. M. Bixby & Company, manufactured shoe blackings and shoe dressings, but music was his passion. He was also a Sunday school superintendent and choir leader. He died on March 11, 1912 in Fordham, New York. Friedrich Filitz

1804 - 1876 Composer of "CAPETOWN" in The Hymnal Friedrich Filitz PhD Germany 1804-1876. Born at Arnstadt. Thuringia, he was a German composer and musicologist. He collected church music. He also studied philosophy. In 1833 he worked in Berlin as a music critic and at other employment. He was also a music historian. With Ludwig Erck, he published a collection of 15th & 17th Century chorales in 1845. He moved to Munich and published a chorale book in 1847. His legacy of vauable church music was donated to the Bavarian State Library, where it has made many forgotten works available once again. He died in Bonn, Germany. John Perry

Clement Cotterill Scholefield

1839 - 1904 Person Name: C. C. Scholefield Composer of "SHALOM" in The Book of Praise for Sunday Schools Rev. Clement C. Scholefield (b. Edgbaston, near Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, 1839; d. Goldalming, Surrey, England, 1904) Educated at St. John's College, Cambridge, he was ordained in the Church of England in 1867. He served at Hove, Brighton, St. Peter's in Kensington (1869-1879), and briefly at St. Luke's in Chelsea. From 1880 to 1890 he was chaplain at Eton College and from 1890 to 1895 vicar of Holy Trinity in Knightsbridge. Mainly self-taught as a musician, Scholefield became an accomplished pianist and composed some songs and hymn tunes. Bert Polman

Gilbert Rorison

1821 - 1861 Author of "Three in One, and One in Three" in The Hymnal Rorison, Gilbert, LL.D., son of John Rorison, a merchant of Glasgow, was born in Renfield Street, Glasgow, Feb. 7, 1821. He was educated at Glasgow University, and at that time he was a member of the United Presbyterian Church. Subsequently he joined the Scottish Episcopal Church, and, after studying for the ministry at Edinburgh under Bishops Terrot and Russell, was ordained by the latter in 1843. He was for some time curate of St. James's, Leith, and of the Episcopal Church, Helensburgh, and then Incumbent of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Peterhead. He died at Bridge of Allan, Oct. 11, 1869. In 1851 he edited Hymns and Anthems adjusted to the Church Services throughout the Christian Year, London, Hope & Co. (Revised, 1860; Appx. 1869.) This contains several of his translations from the Latin. He is widely known through his "Three in One, and One in Three " (q. v.). --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

1874 - 1945 Composer of "[Three in One and One in Three]" in Bright Beautiful Bells Benjamin Burke (B. B.) Beall, was born on May 25, 1874, Dallas, Georgia. Benjamin graduated in music and elocution from the Texas Musical Institute. He ran the B. B. Beall publishing company in Douglasville, Georgia. He died on October 7, 1945, in Douglasville, Georgia.
