Judson W. Van DeVenter

1855 - 1939 Person Name: Judson W. VanDeVenter, 1855-1939 Author of "All to Jesus I Surrender (I Surrender All)" in African Methodist Episcopal Church Hymnal Judson W. Van DeVenter was born 15 December 1855 on a farm near the village of Dundee, Michigan. He was educated in the country and village schools, and at Hillsdale College. He later moved to St. Petersburg, Florida. He wrote about 100 hymns. W. S. Weeden

1847 - 1908 Person Name: Winfield S. Weeden, 1847-1908 Composer of "SURRENDER" in African Methodist Episcopal Church Hymnal Winfield S. Weeden was born in 1847 in Middleport, OH. In his early life he was active in teaching singing schools throughout that area in Ohio. As singer and associate to Judson VandeVenter in his evangelistic campaigns, Weeden assisted in meetings at East Palestine and Sebring. He compiled several collections of hymns among them The Peacemaker, Songs of the Peacemaker, and Songs of Sovereign Grace. Weeden died in 1908. 1840 - 1930 Person Name: Joel Blomquist, 1840-1930 Composer of "HEAVENLY DOVE" in Hymns of the Saints Blomqvist, Joël. (Stockholm, Sweden, November 15, 1840--October 30, 1930, Kullarstad, Sweden). Swedish Free Church Movement. Upholsterer by trade, lay preacher and singer. Colporteur for Uppsala City Mission, 1874-1878. Wrote about 400 hymn texts in the pietistic tradition and almost as many tunes. Published several hymn collections including Sabbatsklockan, 1877-1878, and Fridstoner, 1879-1882. Edited musical periodical, Fridsrösten, 1884-1886. His works are representative of the Rosenian revival period. Author of "Heavenly Father, Hear My Supplication," (Helige Fader, böj ditt öra neder), "Heavenly Spirit, Gentle Spirit" (Himladuva, Ande ljuva), "Praise the Lord, All Praise and Blessing" (Loven Herren, ty att lova), and "Sabbath Day of Rest and Cheer" (Sabbatsdag, hur skön du är). L. O. Sanderson

1901 - 1992 Person Name: L. O. S. Arranger of "[All to Jesus, I surrender]" in Sacred Selections for the Church See also Vana R. Raye (pseudonym). ================== Lloyd Otis Sanderson was born May 18, 1901 near Jonesboro, Arkansas. His father was a singing teacher. There were a variety of musical instruments in the home, so all of his children learned to sing and play instruments from early in life. He studied and taught music most of early teens and twenties and then began to serve churches for Churches of Christ. Among Churches of Christ, L.O Sanderson is one of a handful of significant individuals who helped to codify the hymnody of this denomination in the early and mid 20th century. Dozens of his songs remain at the core of this group’s hymnody. As Musical Editor for the Gospel Advocate Company of Nashville during the hymnal heyday of the mid 20th century, Sanderson was responsible not only for the editing of a number of important hymnals, but for helping to shape the church’s song. He composed a number under the pen name of Vana Raye in tribute to his wife. As a composer of both lyrics and music, Sanderson collaborated with a number of individuals, the most notable being his friend, Thomas O. Chisholm, with whom he wrote “Be With Me, Lord,” perhaps his most popular hymn.
