George Keith

1638 - 1716 Person Name: G. Keith Hymnal Number: 152 Author of "How Firm a Foundation" in Gospel Gems Number 1 George Keith, according to D. Sedgwick, was the author of "How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord." Little is known about Keith, save that he was a publisher, a son-in-law of Dr. Gill, and the composer of several hymns. --Annotations of the Hymnal, Charles Hutchins, M.A. 1872.

1862 - 1935 Hymnal Number: 47 Composer of "[There's a sound of abundance of rain]" in Gospel Gems Number 1 Born: March 8, 1862, Rowley, Massachusetts. Died: December 16, 1935, Atlanta, Georgia. Buried: Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, Georgia. Husband of hymnist Civilla Martin, Stillman attended Harvard University and was ordained a Baptist minister, though he later switched to the Disciples of Christ denomination. In 1916, he became a professor of Bible studies at Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, North Carolina. Three years later, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia. Franz Abt

1819 - 1885 Hymnal Number: 178 Composer of "THE TEMPERANCE CALL" in Gospel Gems Number 1 Franz Abt, born Dec. 21, 1819 at Eilenburg in the Prussian provinces of Saxony. His father was a musician and clergyman of the Lutheran Church. Franz studied music at Leipsic, and became known as a song-writer in 1838. In September, 1841, he married, and was leader of the orchesta at the Zuric theatre; became a teacher in 1842, but was litle known until his song "When the Swallows Homeward fly" carried his name to all parts of the civilized world. In 1865 was concert-master at Brunswick, and conducted the great festival at Dresden. He came to the United States in 1872, and was present at teh Peace Jubilee, Boston, where he directed the performance of some of his own music, arriving in New York May w, wher a testimonial concert was given for his benefit at Steinway Hall, May 18. He was received at Philadelphia by the German societies, with torch-light processions and cannonade, May 15, 1872. A Dictionary of Musical Information by John W. 1830 - 1919 Person Name: Miss Etta Campbell Hymnal Number: 146 Author of "Jesus of Nazareth Passeth By" in Gospel Gems Number 1 Campbell, Emma F. R. (1830-1919). Her first name is sometimes given as "Etta." She was a school teacher in Morristown, New Jersey. She published a few novels and an anthology, The Hymn "Jesus of Nazareth passeth by" and Its History, and Other Verses (New York: M. E. Munson, 1909). Jesus the Children's Friend. Appeared in E. P. Hammond's Praises of Jesus, 1864; his New Praises of Jesus, 1869; and in other collections, including several in Great Britain. 2. What means this eager, anxious throng. Jesus passes by. Written during a religious revival in Newark, U.S., 1863, and published in Song Victories.
