S. Ralph Harlow

Harlow attended Harvard University, Union Theological Seminary, Columbia University, & Hartford Theological Seminary. Ordained a Congregational minister in 1912, he was a chaplain and sociology teacher at the International College in Smyrna, Turkey (1912-22). When World War I broke out, he served as YMCA director for the American forces in France. In 1923, he joined Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts, serving over 30 years as a professor of religion and social ethics. He traveled overseas as a lecturer for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and was a visiting professor at Pierce College in Athens, Greece (1945-46). --www.hymntime.com/tch

William Palmer

1811 - 1879 Person Name: W. Palmer (1811-79) Translator of "Spouse of Christ, in arms contending" in A Missionary Hymn Book Palmer, William, M.A., eldest s. of W. J. Palmer, Rector of Mixbury, Oxford, was born July 12, 1811, and matriculated at Magdalen College, Oxford, July 27, 1826, aged 15. He graduated B.A. 1831, and M.A. 1833. He subsequently was a Fellow, Bursar, Tutor, and Vice-President of his College; and also held other important appointments both at Oxford and at the University of Durham. He joined the Church of Rome in 1855, and died April 5, 1879. Mr. Palmer published some translations of Latin hymns as Short Poems and Hymns, the latter mostly Translations, Oxford. Printed by I. Her original and translated work appears in Himnaro Esperanta, Adoru Kantante, Holanda Pioniro and Kristana Revuo, and two separate publications: Dio, la Homaro kaj la Milito, 1916 (essay by G. Campbell Morgan, co-translated with W. Hamilton Webber, 69 p.) Nova Pandoro, 1925 (one-act play, partly original, partly based on an English skit by Jessie Band, 14 p.) --from the article in the Esperanto Wikipedia Adoru Kantante describes her as "a tireless worker for Esperanto in the service of God". Among her hymnic contributions are the original "Vi estas, Jesuo, por ĉiu la Vojo" (a parody of Zamenhof's poem "La Vojo"), as well as translations of "God, the Omnipotent", "Jesus bids us shine", "Lord, thou hast been our dwelling-place", and "Souls of men, why will ye scatter".
