Emily R. Brink

Brink is a Senior Research Fellow of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship and Adjunct Professor of Church Music and Worship at Calvin Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her main areas of responsibility are conference planning and global resources. She is program manager of the annual Calvin Symposium on Worship, which draws more than 70 presenters and 1600 participants from around the world. She also travels widely to lecture and to learn about worship in different parts of the world, especially in Asia, where she has lectured in Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan. Her areas of interest include congregational song from all times and places; psalmody; hymnal editing. She was editor of four hymnals and consults with a wide range of churches on worship renewal issues. Born at Norwich, Norfolk, England, he graduated from New College, Oxford. He married Sarah Ransford, and they had five children: Sarah, Francis, Arthur, John, and Mary. Arthur died in infancy. Mann was a chorister and assistant organist at Norwich Cathedral, then, after short stints playing the organ at St Peter’s, Wolverhampton (1870-71); St. Michael’s Tettenhall Parish Church (1871-75); and Beverley Minster (1875-76); he became organist at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge (1876-1929), Cambridge University organist (1897-1929), and music master and organist at the Leys School, Cambridge (1894-1922). In addition to composing an oratorio and some hymn tunes, he was music editor of the Church of England Hymnal (1894). In 1918 he directed the music and first service of “Nine lessons & carols” at King’s College Chapel. He was an arranger, author, composer, and editor. His wife, Sarah, died in 1918. George Lockwood

George Lockwood was born in 1946 and has been a missionary to Costa Rica. He has pastored Spanish-speaking congregations in both Arizona and California and served on the editorial committee for the Methodist hymnal supplement Celebremos II. In addition, Lockwood has traveled throughout Central and South America interviewing church musicians and gathering new hymns from both Spanish and Portuguese cultures which he then presents at conferences and workshops. Asahel Nettleton

1783 - 1844 Topics: Bautismo Arranger of "NETTLETON" in Celebremos Su Gloria Nettleton, Asahel, D.D., a well-known Connecticut evangelist, was born at North Killingworth, Connecticut, April 21, 1783, and educated at Yale College, graduating in 1809. In 1811 he was licenced to preach, receiving ordination in 1817. He never settled as a pastor with any congregation, but preached in Western Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York; in Virginia, 1827-28; and also in Great Britain in 1831. He died in 1843. His Memoirs, Sermons and Remains were published in 1844. Dr. Hatfield ascribes to him a hymn:— "Come, Holy Ghost, my soul inspire— This one great gift impart;" apparently on no other ground than that it appeared anonymously (as did many others) in his Village Hymns, in 1824, and has been traced no further. Nettleton's hymnological work centred in the compiling of his Village Hymns, from which more hymns of the older American writers have passed into English collections than from any other source. Howard Hughes

Michael McMahon, declared, “Board Members agreed unanimously that you have created compositions for the liturgy that are beautiful, delightful, and spirited, and that have fostered strong participation by the worshiping assembly as they pray the texts you have set to music.” The Marianist composer’s first published work was “Mass for Peace” which appeared in Peoples Mass Book, 1964 edition, released by World Library Publications. As liturgical celebration developed in the English vernacular following the Second Vatican Council, Brother Howard produced a wide range of liturgical compositions published by WLP, GIA, ICEL, OCP, LTP, CFCW, FDLC, USCC, RP, NPM, Presbyterian Church USA, and The United Methodist Hymnal Companion. And at the age of 81 he is still composing and accepting commissions for special events. A Marianist religious for 64 years, this distinguished liturgical musician and composer began as a high teacher of French and director of high school choral groups. In addition Brother Howard also sang in symphonic choruses in New York and in Baltimore. He commented that “conducting high school choral concerts and singing with adult symphonic choruses have been a great help in learning to write music.” The National Association of Pastoral Musicians will honor Brother Howard Hughes, S.M., as Pastoral Musician of the Year when it gathers for its national convention in Washington, DC, July 29 – August 2, 2012.
