George Herbert Palmer

Ralph Vaughan Williams

1872 - 1958 Scripture: Isaiah 55 Arranger of "FOREST GREEN" in Hymns to the Living God Through his composing, conducting, collecting, editing, and teaching, Ralph Vaughan Williams (b. Down Ampney, Gloucestershire, England, October 12, 1872; d. Westminster, London, England, August 26, 1958) became the chief figure in the realm of English music and church music in the first half of the twentieth century. His education included instruction at the Royal College of Music in London and Trinity College, Cambridge, as well as additional studies in Berlin and Paris. During World War I he served in the army medical corps in France. Vaughan Williams taught music at the Royal College of Music (1920-1940), conducted the Bach Choir in London (1920-1927), and directed the Leith Hill Music Festival in Dorking (1905-1953). A major influence in his life was the English folk song. A knowledgeable collector of folk songs, he was also a member of the Folksong Society and a supporter of the English Folk Dance Society. Vaughan Williams wrote various articles and books, including National Music (1935), and composed numerous arrangements of folk songs; many of his compositions show the impact of folk rhythms and melodic modes. His original compositions cover nearly all musical genres, from orchestral symphonies and concertos to choral works, from songs to operas, and from chamber music to music for films. Vaughan Williams's church music includes anthems; choral-orchestral works, such as Magnificat (1932), Dona Nobis Pacem (1936), and Hodie (1953); and hymn tune settings for organ. But most important to the history of hymnody, he was music editor of the most influential British hymnal at the beginning of the twentieth century, The English Hymnal (1906), and coeditor (with Martin Shaw) of Songs of Praise (1925, 1931) and the Oxford Book of Carols (1928). Alfred V. Fedak

b. 1953 Scripture: Isaiah 55:6-7 Harmonizer of "GILU HAGALILIM" in Glory to God Alfred Fedak (b. 1953), is a well-known organist, composer, and Minister of Music at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Capitol Hill in Albany, New York. He graduated from Hope College in 1975 with degrees in organ performance and music history. He obtained a Master’s degree in organ performance from Montclair State University, and has also studied at Westminster Choir College, Eastman School of Music, the Institute for European Studies in Vienna, and at the first Cambridge Choral Studies Seminar at Clare College, Cambridge. As a composer, he has over 200 choral and organ works in print, and has three published anthologies of his work (Selah Publishing). In 1995, he was named a Visiting Fellow in Church Music at Episcopal Seminary of the Soutwest in Austin, Texas. He is also a Fellow of the American Guild of Organists, and was awarded the AGO’s prestigious S. Lewis Elmer Award. Fedak is a Life Member of the Hymn Society, and writes for The American Organist, The Hymn, Reformed Worship, and Music and Worship. He was a member of the Presbyterian Committee on Congregational Song that prepared Glory to God, the 2013 hymnal of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Laura de Jong

Juan Bautista Cabrera Ivars

1837 - 1916 Person Name: Juan Bautista Cabrera, 1837-1916 Scripture: Isaiah 55:1-2 Author (Estrofas) of "Vengan Todoos al Banquete (Come, Join the Feasting)" in Oramos Cantando = We Pray In Song Juan Bautista Cabrera Ivars was born in Benisa, Spain, April 23, 1837. He attended seminary in Valencia, studying Hebrew and Greek, and was ordained as a priest. He fled to Gibraltar in 1863 due to religious persecution where he abandoned Catholicism. He worked as a teacher and as a translator. One of the works he translated was E.H. Brown's work on the thirty-nine articles of the Anglican Church, which was his introduction to Protestantism. He was a leader of a Spanish Reformed Church in Gibraltar. He continued as a leader in this church when he returned to Spain after the government of Isabel II fell, but continued to face legal difficulties. He then organized the Spanish Reformed Episcopal Church and was consecrated as bishop in 1894. He recognized the influence of music and literature on evangelism which led him to write and translate hymns. 1932 - 1985 Person Name: Anthony G. Petti, 1932-1985 Scripture: Isaiah 55:1-2 Adapter of "Come and Let Us Drink of That New River" in Gather Comprehensive Petti, Anthony Gaetano. (London, England, February 12, 1932-- ). Roman Catholic. University College, London, B.A., 1955; M.A., 1957; D.Lit., 1970. While teaching English at the University of London (1955-1968) and the University of Calgary, Alberta (1969-?), and directing in both cities vocal and instrumental groups whose members shared his tastes, he did a great deal of research into Renaissance literature and music, particularly that produced by English Catholics, and published critical editions of many obscure and fascinating works. He reached out to a non-specialist audience with The New Catholic Hymns, for which he served as literary editor and made several translations, was published by Faber Music, London, in 1971; editions in several other countries soon followed, and his verses found their way into many other hymnbooks and breviaries. --Hugh D. George Lockwood

b. 1946 Person Name: George Lockwood, b. 1946 Scripture: Isaiah 55:6-11 Translator of "Seek the Lord (Busquen a Dios)" in Oramos Cantando = We Pray In Song Rev. George Lockwood was born in 1946 and has been a missionary to Costa Rica. He has pastored Spanish-speaking congregations in both Arizona and California and served on the editorial committee for the Methodist hymnal supplement Celebremos II. In addition, Lockwood has traveled throughout Central and South America interviewing church musicians and gathering new hymns from both Spanish and Portuguese cultures which he then presents at conferences and workshops. George Henry Day

1883 - 1966 Scripture: Isaiah 55:6-11 Composer of "GENEVA" in The United Methodist Hymnal George Henry Day (1883-1966) was a choirboy at Trinity Chapel, New York City, where he studied with G. Edward Stubbs. Day was appointed choirmaster at St. Peter’s in Chelsea Square (1911) but maintained his position as an assistant auditor of the Gorham Manufacturing Company for two more years. He resigned as assistant auditor, took special courses at Columbia University, and in 1915 graduated from New York College of Music. He served as organist and choirmaster in churches in Youngstown, Ohio; Wilmington, Delaware, where he studied with Edward Shippen Barnes; and Rochester, New York, before going to Trinity Church. He was awarded a Doctor of Music degree from Lincoln-Jefferson University (1923). --The Presbyterian Hymnal Companion, 1993
