David E. Ford

1797 - 1875 Author of "Vain Are All Terrestrial Pleasures" in The Cyber Hymnal Ford, David Everard, son of a Congregational Minister at Long Melford, was born there on Sept. 13, 1797. He became pastor of the Congregational Church at Lymington, in Oct. 1821; Travelling Secretary to the Congregational Union in 1841; and pastor of Greengate Chapel, Salford, Manchester, in 1843. He died at Bedford, Oct. 23, 1875. Mr. Ford published several works including, Hymns chiefly on the Parables of Christ, 1828. From this is taken, (1) "Earthly joys no longer please us" (Heaven Anticipated). (2) "How vain is all beneath the skies" (Heaven Anticipated). These are in American common use. See Hymns of the Church, 1869, and Laudes Domini, 1884. Another of his hymns in common use from the same work, p. 107, is:—"Almighty Father, heavenly Friend" (Old and New Year). Martha E. Shelly

1812 - 1901 Person Name: Martha E. Jackson Author of "Lord, a Little Band and Lowly" in The King's Praises Shelly, Martha Evans, née Jackson, daughter of John Jackson, of Manchester, born at Stockport, Cheshire, and married in 1846 to J. W. Shelly, of Great Yarmouth. Her hymns appeared in Curwen's Child’s Own Hymn Book, 1844-1874, and include:— 1. Father, let Thy benediction. On behalf of Children. Appeared in Curwen's Child's Own Hymn Book, 1844, and is found in a few modern collections. 2. Lord, a little band and lowly. Children's Prayer. Mrs. Shelly's account of this hymn is:-—"At a Sunday School meeting in Manchester, the Rev. John Curwen, one evening, gave a lecture on singing. He sang a very pretty and simple tune, to which he said he had no suitable words, and wished that some one would write a hymn to it. I wrote these verses and gave them to him after the close of the meeting." (Curwen's Biog. Notes, p. 15.) The tune which Mr. Curwen sang was a German one, and was given in his Child's Own Tune Book under the name of Glover. The hymn was published in his Child's Own Hymn Book, 1844, and has passed into a large number of collections for children. 3. Lord, help us, as we sing. Sincerity. 1812 - 1887 Person Name: Joseph Philip Knight Composer of "[Jesus, I my cross have taken]" in Hymns of Praise with Tunes Joseph Philip Knight, 1812-1887 Born: July 26, 1812, Bradford-on-Avon, England. Died: June 1, 1887, Great Yarmouth, Lincolnshire, England. Pseudonym: Philip Mortimer. Knight studied under J. Corfe, the organist at Bristol Cathedral, and began composing around age 20. In 1839, he visited America, and for a year taught music in the school in Vermont run by Emma Willard. It was then that he wrote the music for "Rocked in the Cradle of the Deep" while there. Some years later, he was ordained by the Bishop of Exeter and became Vicar of St. Agnes, Scilly Isles. --www.hymntime.com/tch

Nāşīf Yāzijī

1800 - 1871 Person Name: ناصيف اليازجي Author of "أعطني قلبا نقيا" in كتاب الترانيم الروحية للكنائس الإنجيلية Nasif al-Yaziji (March 25, 1800 – February 8, 1871) was a Lebanese author at the times of the Ottoman Empire and father of Ibrahim al-Yaziji. He was one of the leading figures in the Nahda movement. We was a poet, wrote and translated many hymns, and helped in translating the complete Bible into Arabic. ناصيف بن عبد الله بن جنبلاط بن سعد اليازجي (25 مارس 1800 - 8 فبراير 1871)، أديب وشاعر لبناني ولد في قرية كفر شيما، من قرى الساحل اللبناني في 25 آذار سنة 1800 م في أسرة اليازجي التي نبغ كثير من أفرادها في الفكر والأدب، وأصله من حمص. لعب دورا كبيرا في إعادة استخدام اللغة الفصحى بين العرب في القرن التاسع عشر، عمل لدى الأسرة الشهابية كاتبا وشارك في أول ترجمة الإنجيل والعهد القديم إلى العربية في العصر الحديث.

Minot J. Savage

1841 - 1918 Person Name: M. J. S. Author of "Dost thou hear the bugle sounding" in Sacred Songs For Public Worship Savage, Minot Judson, D.D., was born at Norridgewock, Maine, June 10, 1841, and educated at Bangor Seminary, where he graduated in 1864. From 1867 to 1873 he was a Congregational Minister, and then he joined the Unitarians, and has now (1900) a charge in Boston. He has published several works, including Poems, Boston, 1882. He also edited, with H. M. Dow, Sacred Songs for Public Worship, Boston, 1883, to which he contributed 46 original hymns. In hymnals other than this, of his hymns the following are in common use:— 1. Dost thou hear the bugle sounding. Consecration to Duty. 2. Father, we would not dare to change Thy purpose, &C. Prayer. 3. 0 God Whose law is in the sky. Consecration to Duty. 4. 0 star of truth down shining. Truth. 5. The God that to the fathers revealed His holy will. God unchangeable. 6. The very blossoms of our life. Holy Baptism. 7. What purpose burns within our hearts. Joining in Church Fellowship. 8. God of the glorious summer hours. New Year This is in D. Agate's Sunday S. Hymn Book, 1881, No. 371, and dated 1875.
