Representative Text

1 Speak a kind word to others who pass along your way,
Tell them how Jesus loves them, make someone glad today;
Smile on the troubled workers who bravely bear their load,
Sending a ray of sunshine along life’s weary road.

Refrain:
Sing when the clouds look dreary, smile when the skies grow drear,
Comfort the lone and weary, and make life full of cheer,
Sing ‘mid the falling showers, smile when the skies grow dim,
Scatter love’s fragrant flowers, keep ever glad in Him.

2 Ev’ry heart bears a burden, give out a bit of cheer,
Lending a hand to rescue the souls He counts so dear;
Sing when the skies look dreary, the world has need of song,
Ready for faithful service, go forth with courage strong. [Refrain]

3 Speak a kind word to others in tender sympathy,
Sharing your many blessings where great the need may be;
Somebody feels discourages, O do not pass them by,
Win them for Christ the Saviour, bright stars to shine on high. [Refrain]

Lizzie De Armond was a prolific writer of children's hymns, recitations and exercises. When she was twelve years old her first poem was published in the Germantown, Pa. Telegraph, however, it was not until she was a widow with eight children to support that she started writing in earnest. She wrote articles, librettos, nature stories and other works, as well as hymns.
