God Is Working His Purpose Out

Author: Arthur C. Ainger, 1841-1919 Meter: Irregular Appears in 93 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 52:7 Lyrics: 1 God is working his purpose out, as year succeeds to year: God is working his purpose out, and the time is drawing near. Nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. 2 From the east to utmost west, where human feet have trod, by the mouth of many messengers goes forth the voice of God, "Give ear to me, you continents, you isles, give ear to me, that the earth may be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea." 3 March we forth in the strength of God, with the banner of Christ unfurled, that the light of the glorious Gospel of truth may shine throughout the world. Fight we the fight with sorrow and sin to set their captives free, that the earth may be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. 4 All we can do is nothing worth unless God blesses the deed. Vainly we hope for the harvest-tide till God gives life to the seed. Yet nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. Used With Tune: PURPOSE

Glorious Things Are Sung of Zion

Author: William W. Phelps, 1792–1872 Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 16 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 52:8 Lyrics: 1. Glorious things are sung of Zion, Enoch’s city seen of old, Where the righteous, being perfect, Walked with God in streets of gold. Love and virtue, faith and wisdom, Grace and gifts were all combined. As himself each loved his neighbor; All were one in heart and mind. 2. There they shunn’d the pow’r of Satan And observed celestial laws; For in Adam-ondi-Ahman Zion rose where Eden was. When beyond the pow’r of evil, So that none could covet wealth, One continual feast of blessings Crown’d their days with peace and health. 3. Then the tow’rs of Zion glittered Like the sun in yonder skies, And the wicked stood and trembled, Filled with wonder and surprise. Then their faith and works were perfect; Lo, they followed their great Head! So the city went to heaven, And the world said, “Zion’s fled!” 4. When the Lord returns with Zion, And we hear the watchman cry, Then we’ll surely be united, And we’ll all see eye to eye. Then we’ll mingle with the angels, And the Lord will bless his own. Then the earth will be as Eden, And we’ll know as we are known. Topics: Jesus Christ Second Coming; Millennium; Restoration; Unity; Zion Used With Tune: IN BABILONE

Glad Tidings of great Joy

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 52:7 First Line: Th' Almighty spake, and Gabr'el sped Lyrics: 1 Th'Almighty spake, and Gabr'el sped, Upborne on wings of light; Jehovah's glory round him spread, And chang'd to day, the night. 2 Swift down to earth th'Archangel flew, From God's eternal throne; His shining robe of rainbow hue, The stars, moon, sun, outshone. 3 One note of peace was heard on high: Glad tidings roll'd around: Ten thousand thousand left the sky, To catch Salvation's sound. 4 Shout, shout for joy— rejoice, O earth: Hail, hail this glorious morn; Rejoice! rejoice, in Jesus' birth, To day are nations born. 5 From Zion's hill to worlds above, Re-echo'd back the strain; And golden harps, attun'd to love, Thus swept Ephratah's plain. 6 He comes! He comes! the Saviour God. Good will, peace, joy for men. Glad tidings shout to all abroad, So be it, Lord— Amen Topics: The Nativity of the Savior, Celebrated by Angels and Men
