Beneath the Cross of Jesus

Author: Elizabeth C. Clephane, 1830-1869 Meter: 7.6.8.6.8.6.8.6 Appears in 522 hymnals First Line: Beneath the cross of Jesus I gladly take my stand Lyrics: 1 Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand: The shadow of a mighty rock Within a weary land, A home within the wilderness, A rest upon the way, From the burning of the noontide heat And the burden of the day. 2 Upon that cross of Jesus Mine eyes at times can see The very dying form of One Who suffered there for me; And from my smitten heart, with tears, Two wonders I confess - The wonders of His glorious love And my unworthiness. 3 I take, O cross, thy shadow For my abiding place; I ask no other sunshine than The sunshine of His face, Content to let the world go by, To know no gain or loss, My sinful self my only shame, My glory all the cross. I need Thee, precious Jesus

Author: Frederick Whitfield Appears in 304 hymnals Lyrics: 1 I need Thee, precious Jesus, For I am full of sin; My soul is dark and guilty, My heart is dead within; I need the cleansing fountain Where I can always flee, The Blood of Christ most precious, The sinner's perfect plea. 2 I need Thee, precious Jesus, For I am very poor; A stranger and a pilgrim, I have no earthly store. I need the love of Jesus To cheer me on my way, To guide my doubting footsteps, To be my strength and stay. 3 I need Thee, precious Jesus, I need a Friend like Thee, A Friend to soothe and pity, A Friend to care for me. I need the heart of Jesus To feel each anxious care, To tell my every trouble And all my sorrows share. Amen. Topics: The Christian Life Communion with Christ Used With Tune: ST. CHRISTOPHER

O Sacred Head surrounded

Author: St. Bernard; H. W. Baker Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 88 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O Sacred Head surrounded By crown of piercing thorn! O bleeding Head, so wounded, Reviled and put to scorn! Death's pallid hue comes o'er Thee, The glow of life decays, Yet angel-hosts adore Thee, And tremble as they gaze. 2 I see Thy strength and vigor, All fading in the strife, And death with cruel rigor, Bereaving Thee of life; O agony and dying! O love to sinners free! Jesu, all grace supplying, Oh, turn Thy face on me. 3 In this, Thy bitter Passion, Good Shepherd, think of me With Thy most sweet compassion, Unworthy though I be: Beneath Thy cross abiding Forever would I rest, In Thy dear love confiding, And with Thy presence blest. 4 Be near when I am dying; Oh, show Thy cross to me: And to my succor flying, Come, Lord, and set me free. These eyes, new faith receiving, From Jesus shall not move; For he, who dies believing, Dies safely through Thy love. Amen. Topics: Holy Week Used With Tune: ST. CHRISTOPHER

Life That Knows No Ending

Author: G. Tabor Thompson Appears in 245 hymnals First Line: Brief life is her our portion Lyrics: 1 Brief life is here our portion; Brief sorrow, short-lived care; That life that knows no ending— The tearless life, is there. O happy retribution; Short toil, eternal rest; For ev’ry son of Adam A mansion with the blest. 2 And now we fight the battle, But then shall wear the crown Of full and everlasting And passionless renown. But they who now instruct us Shall then be seen and known; And they who know and see them Shall have them for their own. 3 The morning shall awaken, The shadows shall decay; And each true hearted servant Shall shine as doth the day. There father, mother, children, Shall see each other’s face; And we behold forever A happy human race. Used With Tune: [Brief life is her our portion]

A Man Named Nicodemus

Author: Susan H. Peterson Meter: 7.6.8.6.8.6.8.6 Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: A man named Nicodemus to Jesus came one night Lyrics: 1. A man named Nicodemus to Jesus came one night. He said, We know You’ve come from God; Your wonders show His might. In answer, Jesus did declare, Give heed, these words are true: You cannot see God’s kingdom come unless you’re born anew. 2. Then Nicodemus questioned, Reborn, how can this be? For surely none can to the womb return and new life see. Jesus replied, Flesh brings forth flesh, but like the blowing wind, The Spirit does give birth to spirit; thus man is born again. 3. As Moses in the desert did lift the snake up high, The Son of Man must be raised up that men might live, not die. For God so loved this world of men, he gave his Son for us, That we might have eternal life, if we in Him do trust. 4. God did not send His Son to condemn the world of sin. Christ came instead to save all those who place their trust in Him. All who believe escape God’s wrath; they come into the light. But all who practice evil deeds are guilty in God’s sight. 5. Without the Son, all perish; the verdict is decreed. All those who fail to trust Christ’s name condemned will ever be. Lord, give me boldness to proclaim Your message to the lost, That they might gain eternal life by looking to the cross. Used With Tune: ST. CHRISTOPHER

Before the Cross of Jesus

Author: Ferdinand Q. Blanchard, 1876-1968 Meter: 7.6.8.6.7.6.8.6 Appears in 12 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Before the cross of Jesus Our lives are judged today; The meaning of our eager strife Is tested by His Way. Across our restless living The light streams from His cross, And by its clear, revealing beams We measure gain and loss. 2 The hopes that lead us onward, The fears that hold us back, Our will to dare great things for God, The courage that we lack, The faith we keep in goodness, Our love, as low or pure - On all, the judgment of the cross Falls steady, clear, and sure. 3 Yet humbly, in our striving, O God, we face its test. We crave the pow'r to do Thy will With Him who did it best. On us let now the healing Of His great Spirit fall, And make us brave and full of joy To answer to His call. We Hail Thee Now, O Jesus

Author: Frederick George Scott (1861-1944) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 8 hymnals Lyrics: 1 We hail thee now, O Jesus: thy presence here we own, though sight and touch have failed us, and faith perceives alone. Thy love has veiled thy glory and hid thy power divine, in mercy to our weakness, beneath an earthly sign. 2 We hail thee now, O Jesus: in silence hast thou come, for all the hosts of heaven with wonderment are dumb -- so great the condescension, so marvellous the love, which for our sakes, O Saviour, have drawn thee from above. 3 We hail thee now, O Jesus: for law and type have ceased, and thou in each communion art sacrifice and priest. We make this great memorial in union, Lord, with thee, and plead thy death and passion to cleanse and set us free. 4 We hail thee now, O Jesus: for death is ever near, and in thy presence only its terrors disappear. Dwell with us, sweetest Saviour, and guide us through the night, till shadows end in glory. and faith be lost in sight. Desire of Every Nation

Author: Anna B. Hoppe Meter: 7.6.8.6.8.6.8.6 Appears in 3 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Desire of every nation, Light of the Gentiles, Thou! In fervent adoration Before Thy throne we bow; Our hearts and tongues adore Thee, Blest Dayspring from the skies. Like incense sweet before Thee, Permit our songs to rise. 2. Thou Herald of the morning, They who in darkness dwell Behold Thy brightness dawning O’er realms of Israel. With glorious beams unclouded, Thy all-transcendent light Dispels the gloom that shrouded Earth’s dark and dismal night. 3. Arise and shine in splendor, Thou bright and morning Star! The Gentiles come to render Their gifts from realms afar. The word by prophets spoken In truth is now fulfilled. And yearning hearts, once broken, With sweetest hope are filled. 4. Arise and bring salvation To all who dwell below, Let earth in jubilation Reflect Thy radiant glow. O long expected Savior, Thou Hope of Israel, Let Gentiles gain Thy favor, And of Thy glory tell. 5. Our Life and Resurrection, Lord Jesus Christ, Thou art; O shed Thy light’s reflection To earth’s remotest part; Let Gentile tongues confess Thee, Rejoicing in Thy light, The ransomed thousands bless Thee, Thou hast dispelled the night. O Blessèd Sun whose splendor

Author: Karl Johann Philipp Spitta; Richard Massie Appears in 14 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O blessèd Sun, whose splendor Dispels the shades of night; O Jesus, my Defender, My Soul's supreme delight, Though fortune should bereave me Of all I love the best, If Thou Thy love still leave me, I freely give the rest. 2 I know no life divided, O Lord of life, from Thee; In Thee is life provided For all mankind and me; I know no death, O Jesus, Because I live in Thee; Thy death it is which frees us From death eternally. 3 I fear no tribulation, Since, whatsoe'er it be, It makes no separation Between my Lord and me. If Thou, my God and Teacher, Vouchsafe to be my own, Though poor, I shall be richer Than monarch on his throne. 4 If, while on earth I wander, My heart is light and blest, Ah, what shall I be yonder, In perfect peace and rest? O blessèd thought in dying! We go to meet the Lord, Where there shall be no sighing, A kingdom our reward. Amen. Topics: The Christian Life Communion with Christ Used With Tune: ST. CHRISTOPHER
