Nothing but leaves

Appears in 122 hymnals Hymnal Title: The Little Seraph First Line: Nothing but leaves, the Spirit grieves Lyrics: 1 Nothing but leaves, the Spirit grieves Over a wasted life; O'er us indulged while conscience slept, O'er vows and promises unkept, And reap from years of strife-- Nothing but leaves, Nothing but leaves. 2 Nothing but leaves, no gather'd sheaves Of life's fair rip'ning grain; We sow our seeds, lo! tares and weeds, Words, idle words, for earnest deeds, We reap, with toil and pain,-- Nothing but leaves. 3 Nothing but leaves, and mem'ry weaves; No vail to hide the past; And as we trace our weary way, Counting each lost and misspent day, Sadly we find at last-- Nothing but leaves. 4 Ah! who shall thus the Master meet, Bearing but withered sheaves? Ah! who shall at the Saviour's feet, Before the awful judgment-seat, Lay down, for golden sheaves, Nothing but leaves? Used With Tune: NOTHING BUT LEAVES

Authors, composers, editors, etc.

Anonymous

Person Name: Anon. Hymnal Title: Sänger-Bote Composer of "[Ach, Blätter nur! Das ist betrübt!]" in Sänger-Bote In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

Lucy Ackermann

Person Name: Mrs. W. S. Ackerman Hymnal Title: The Bow of Promise Author of "Nothing But Leaves" in The Bow of Promise

S. J. Vail

1818 - 1883 Person Name: Silas Jones Vail Hymnal Title: The Cyber Hymnal Composer of "[Nothing but leaves! The Spirit grieves]" in The Cyber Hymnal In his youth Silas Jones Vail learned the hatter's trade at Danbury, Ct. While still a young man, he went to New York and took employment in the fashionable hat store of William H. Beebe. Later he established himself in business as a hatter at 118 Fulton Street, where he was for many years successful. But the conditions of trade changed, and he could not change with them. After his failure in 1869 or 1870 he devoted his entire time and attention to music. He was the writer of much popular music for use in churches and Sunday schools. Pieces of music entitled "Scatter Seeds of Kindness," "Gates Ajar," "Close to Thee," "We Shall Sleep, but not Forever," and "Nothing but Leaves" were known to all church attendants twenty years ago. Fanny Crosby, the blind authoress, wrote expressly for him many of the verses he set to music. --Vail, Henry H. (Henry Hobart). Genealogy of some of the Vail family descended from Jeremiah Vail at Salem, Mass., 1639, p. 234.
