I Know of a Sleep in Jesus' Name

Author: M. B. Landstad, 1802-80 Meter: 9.8.9.8.9.8 Appears in 15 hymnals Matching Instances: 10 Lyrics: 1 I know of a sleep in Jesus' name, A rest from all toil and sorrow; Earth folds in her arms my weary frame And shelters it till the morrow. My soul is at home with God in heav'n; Her sorrows are past and over. 2 I know of a peaceful eventide; And when I am faint and weary, At times with the journey sorely tried, Through hours that are long and dreary, Then often I yearn to lay me down And sink into blissful slumber. 3 I know of a morning bright and fair When tidings of joy shall wake us, When songs from on high shall fill the air And God to His glory take us, When Jesus shall bid us rise from sleep-- How joyous that hour of waking! 4 O that is a morning dear to me, And oft, o'er the mountains streaming, In spirit its heav'nly light I see As golden the peaks are beaming. Then sing I for joy like birds at dawn That carol in lofty lindens. 5 God's Son to our graves then takes His way, His voice hear all tribes and nations; The portals are rent that guard our clay, And moved are the sea's foundations. He calls out aloud: "Ye dead, come forth!" In glory we rise to meet Him. 6 Now opens the Father's house above, The names of the blest are given: Lord, gather us there; let none we love Be missed in the joys of heaven. Vouchsafe Thou us all a place with Thee; We ask through our dear Redeemer. 7 O Jesus, draw near my dying bed And take me into Thy keeping And say when my spirit hence is fled, "This child is not dead, but sleeping." And leave me not, Savior, till I rise To praise Thee in life eternal. Topics: Death: A Sleep; Trinity 24 Used With Tune: DEN SIGNEDE DAG Text Sources: The Lutheran Hymnal, 1913 (tr.)

O Day Full Of Grace

Author: N. F. S. Grundtvig Meter: 9.8.9.8.9.8 Appears in 12 hymnals Matching Instances: 3 First Line: O day, full of grace, which we behold Lyrics: 1 O day full of grace, which we behold, Now gently to view ascending; Thou over the earth thy reign unfold, Good cheer to all mortals lending, That children of light in every clime May prove that the night is ending. 2 How blest was that gracious midnight hour, When God in our flesh was given; Then flushed the dawn with light and power, That spread o'er the darken'd heaven; Then rose o'er the world that Sun divine Which gloom from our hearts hath driven. 3 Yea, were every tree endow'd with speech, And ev'ry leaflet singing, They never with praise His worth could reach, Though earth with their praise were ringing. Who fully could praise the Light of life Who light to our souls is bringing? 4 As birds in the morning sing God's praise, His fatherly love we cherish, For giving to us this day of grace, For life that shall never perish. His Church He hath kept these thousand years, And hungering souls did nourish. 5 With joy we depart for our fatherland, Where God our Father is dwelling, Where ready for us His mansions stand, Where heaven with praise is swelling; And there we shall walk in endless light, With blest ones His praise forth telling. Topics: Morning and Evening Used With Tune: [O day full of grace, which we behold] Text Sources: Anon., (Danish, 14th Century).

A slumber I know, in Jesus' name

Meter: 9.8.9.8.9.8 Appears in 5 hymnals Matching Instances: 1 Lyrics: 1 A slumber I know, in Jesus' name, A rest from all toil and sorrow; Earth tenderly takes my weary frame, To sleep till the blissful morrow; In heaven my soul with God abides, Forgotten are cares and trials. 2 An even I know, serene and blest, And oft is my spirit longing, When, weary and worn, it finds no rest, While woes on the way are thronging,-- Oft longing to see the journey's end, And rest in a blissful slumber. 3 A morning I know, so bright and fair, When tidings of joy shall wake us, When anthems from high shall fill the air, And God to His glory take us, when Jesus shall bid us rise from sleep-- How joyous that hour of awaking! 4 Oh, dear is that morning fair to me! And oft, o'er the mountains beaming, In spirit its heavenly light I see, As golden the peaks are gleaming-- For joy I must sing, as birds at dawn Their carols in lofty lindens. 5 The Saviour then comes unto our graves; His mighty command is given: Then break from the deep the ocean waves, Each tomb and restraint is riven. All earth hears the cry: Ye dead, come forth! In glory we go to meet Him. 6 Then open the heavenly portals wide, The names of God's saints are given. God grant that we all in faith abide, And rise to the bliss of heaven! Our Father, may we in that great hour Find none of our dear ones missing! 7 O Saviour, when darkens life's last day, And Death in his bonds me keepeth, Come unto my bed, in mercy say: The child is not dead, but sleepeth. Then grant me Thy grace, that I arise To praise Thee in life eternal. Topics: Resurrection of the Dead; Sickness, Death, and Burial Used With Tune: A SLUMBER I KNOW, IN JESUS' NAME

With Gladness We Hail This Blessed Day

Author: P. C. Paulsen; N. F. S. Grundtvig Meter: 9.8.9.8.9.8 Appears in 1 hymnal Matching Instances: 1 Lyrics: 1 With gladness we hail this blessed day, That comes on the wings of morning And chases the shades of night away, With beauty the earth adorning. As children of God we sing His praise, That darkness to light is turning. 2 O wonderful hour, that Christmas night, When Christ to the world was given; He rose in the East with glory bright, That spread o'er the darkened heaven; Then swept o'er the earth a flood of light, That gloom from our hearts hath driven. 3 Tho' trees were alive, endowed with speech, And every leaflet singing, They never His grace could wholly preach, Tho' earth with their praise were ringing. Who fully could praise the Light of life, That light to our souls is bringing? 4 As golden the early flush of morn Awakens the day from slumber, So men by the light of God are born To serve Him in countless number. Then sparkle the eyes, the cheeks do glow, Tho' dark be the day and somber. 5 With joy we shall reach our fatherland, Where God with His own is dwelling; There, ready for us, His mansions stand; There angels, in strength excelling Shall dwell with the saints in glory bright, And heaven with praise be swelling.
