Author: Nahum Tate (1652-1715) Meter: Irregular Appears in 1,100 hymnals Lyrics: 1 While shepherds watched their flocks by night, all seated on the ground, the angel of the Lord came down, and glory shone around. 2 'Fear not,' said he (for mighty dread had seized their troubled mind); 'glad tidings of great joy I bring to you and all mankind. 3 'To you in David's town this day is born of David's line a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord; and this shall be the sign: 4 'the heavenly babe you there shall find to human view displayed, all meanly wrapped in swathing bands, and in a manger laid.' 5 Thus spake the seraph; and forthwith appeared a shining throng of angels praising God, who thus addressed their joyful song: 6 'All glory be to God on high, and to the earth be peace; good will henceforth from heaven to men begin and never cease.' Come Ye that Love the Lord

Author: Isaac Watts (1674-1748) Meter: 6.6.8.8.6.6.6 Appears in 1,788 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Come ye that love the Lord, And let your joys be known; Join in a song with sweet accord Join in a song with sweet accord While ye surround the throne, While ye surround the throne, While ye surround the throne. 2 Let those refuse to sing, Who never knew our God; But children of the heav'nly King, But children of the heav'nly King, Shall speak their joys abroad, Shall speak their joys abroad, Shall speak their joys abroad. 3 This aweful God is ours, Our Father and our Love; He will send down His heav'nly pow'rs, He will send down His heav'nly pow'rs To carry us above, To carry us above, To carry us above. 4 Then let our songs abound, And ev'ry tear be dry; We're marching through Immanuel's ground, We're marching through Immanuel's ground To fairer worlds on High, To fairer worlds on high, To fairer worlds on high. Amen. Topics: Book Four: Occasional Selections, Gospel Songs and Hymns; Beginning of Worship Scripture: Psalm 95:2 Used With Tune: SPURGEON

Nahum Tate

1652 - 1715 Person Name: Nahum Tate (1652-1715) Author of "While shepherds watched their flocks by night" in Ancient and Modern Nahum Tate was born in Dublin and graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, B.A. 1672. He lacked great talent but wrote much for the stage, adapting other men's work, really successful only in a version of King Lear. Although he collaborated with Dryden on several occasions, he was never fully in step with the intellectual life of his times, and spent most of his life in a futile pursuit of popular favor. Nonetheless, he was appointed poet laureate in 1692 and royal historiographer in 1702. He is now known only for the New Version of the Psalms of David, 1696, which he produced in collaboration with Nicholas Brady. Poverty stricken throughout much of his life, he died in the Mint at Southwark, where he had taken refuge from his creditors, on August 12, 1715. --The Hymnal 1940 Companion See also in: Hymn Writers of the Church

Small Church Music

Editors: Philip Doddridge Description: The SmallChurchMusic site was launched in 2006, growing out of the requests from those struggling to provide suitable music for their services and meetings. Rev. Clyde McLennan was ordained in mid 1960’s and was a pastor in many small Australian country areas, and therefore was acutely aware of this music problem. Having also been trained as a Pipe Organist, recordings on site (which are a subset of the smallchurchmusic.com site) are all actually played by Clyde, and also include piano and piano with organ versions. All recordings are in MP3 format. Churches all around the world use the recordings, with downloads averaging over 60,000 per month. The recordings normally have an introduction, several verses and a slowdown on the last verse. Users are encouraged to use software: Audacity (http://www.audacityteam.org) or Song Surgeon (http://songsurgeon.com) (see http://scm-audacity.weebly.com for more information) to adjust the MP3 number of verses, tempo and pitch to suit their local needs. Copyright notice: Rev. Clyde McLennan, performer in this collection, has assigned his performer rights in this collection to Hymnary.org. Non-commercial use of these recordings is permitted.
