The Son of Man from Jordan Rose

Author: Nicolas le Tourneaux; Jackson Mason Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 2 hymnals Lyrics: 1. The Son of Man from Jordan rose, And prayed to God above; When lo, the opening heav’ns disclose A swift descending dove. 2. The Spirit, lighting on His brow, Anoints the Holy One; The Father’s voice declaring, "Thou Art My belovèd Son." 3. So when, through His baptizing blessed The Font new birth conveys, Man kneels a son of God confessed, Heav’n opens as he prays. 4. Fair innocency, like the dove’s, Invests him, purged from sin; For God the brooding Spirit moves, Directs and rules within. 5. O Christ, whose mercy cleansed our stain With streams of grace divine, Let us not soil the robes again Made white in blood of Thine. 6. Redeemer of a world undone, We praise Thee and adore, Jesu, with God the Father One, And Spirit evermore. Used With Tune: IRISH Text Sources: Cluniac Breviary, 1686; Translation by Jackson Mason & the compilers of Hymns Ancient and Modern, 1889

Nicolas Le Tourneux

1640 - 1686 Person Name: Nicolas le Tourneaux Author of "The Son of Man from Jordan Rose" in The Cyber Hymnal Le Tourneux, Nicolas, was born of poor parents at Rouen, April 30, 1640. The uncommon ability he displayed at an early age attracted the notice of M. du Fosset, Maître des Comptes at Rouen, who sent him to the Jesuits' college at Paris, where he made remarkable progress in his studies. He then retired to Touraine, where he passed some time with a pious ecclesiastic in the practice of prayer and penitential exercises. His friend, observing that he had a gift for preaching, advised him to return to Rouen. This he did, and adopted the clerical profession, and was in 1662 admitted to priests' orders by special dispensation, though still under canonical age. He subsequently removed to Paris, where he employed his time in study, and in 1675 obtained the prize given by the French Academy for prose composition. He was appointed to a canonry at the Sainte-Chapelle, and later became prior of Villiers sur Fere in the diocese of Soissons, and died suddenly on the 28th Nov., 1686. He was the author of several theological and religious works, and wrote some hymns, which were inserted in the Cluniac Breviary of 1686, and the Paris Breviary of 1680. In the Cluniac Breviary, 1686, his signature is " N.T.P.R." [George Arthur Crawford, M.A.] -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

Jackson Mason

1833 - 1888 Translator (from Latin) of "The Son of Man from Jordan Rose" in The Cyber Hymnal Mason, Jackson, M.A., son of William Mason, Vicar of Normanton, was born at Normanton Vicarage, in 1833; and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge; B.A. 1856. Ordained in 1858, he was Curate of Cantley, Yorkshire, 1858-59; Vicar of Pickhill, 1859-83; and Vicar of Settle from 1883 to his death, 1889. His Rhythm of Bernard de Morlaix, in English, was published in 1880. This work also contains translations of a few Latin hymns. To the 1889 Supplemental Hymns to Hymns Ancient & Modern, he contributed four translations from the Latin, one from the Greek, and the following original hymns:— (1) "Forty days Thy seer of old." (Easter.) (2) "O Voice of the Beloved." (Easter.) --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907)
