Tenderly, Tenderly, Lead Thou Me On

Author: Joseph Smith III, 1832-1914 Hymnal: Community of Christ Sings #256 (2013) Meter: 10.10.10.10 D Lyrics: 1 Tenderly, tenderly, lead thou me on, on o'er the way where my Savior hath gone; bright on his pathway the sunlight hath shone, tenderly, tenderly, lead thou me on. Close to his hand I so tremblingly clung, faint were the songs I so doubtingly sung, brokenly falling from faltering tongue, tenderly, tenderly, lead thou me on. 2 Faithfully, faithfully, holding my hand, on the rough, slipp'ry heights safely I stand; looking away to the heavenly strand, tenderly, tenderly, he leads me on. Now has my weak heart grown trustingly strong, ways have grown short that seemed once to be long, gladly I join in the triumphant song, tenderly, tenderly, leading me on. Topics: Assurance; Comfort; Faith; God's Presence; Restoration Heritage; Hope; Pilgrimage; Renewal; Trust Scripture: Isaiah 42:16 Languages: English Tune Title: TENDERLY LEAD THOU ME ON

Joseph Smith

1800 - 1873 Author of "Tenderly, Lead Thou Me On" in Zion's Praises (1st ed.) Sir, - It may interest some of your readers to learn that the hymn tune "Innocents" was composed by my grandfather, Joseph Smith, of Halesowen, near Birmingham (born 1800; died 1873). I well remember hearing my grandfather say that he wrote the tune at the request of a lady friend, to the words "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" to be sung by the children of her school. My grandfather was a thorough musician and an excellent singer, though he never practised professionally. He knew the whole of the Psalms from memory, and it used to be one of my greatest pleasures, when, as a child, I visited my grandparents, to sit up after the usual bedtime hour and listen to him as he sang, in his sweet tenor voice, one Psalm after another, to music he would extemporise, and play upon his cabinet organ, the room being in total darkness.
