Delay not, delay not, O sinner, draw near!

Author: Thomas Hastings Appears in 361 hymnals Hymnal Title: The Seventh-Day Adventist Hymn and Tune Book Lyrics: 1 Delay not, delay not, O sinner, draw near! The waters of life are now flowing for thee; No price is demanded, the Saviour is here; Redemption is purchased, salvation is free. 2 Delay not, delay not, why longer abuse The love and compassion of Jesus, thy God? A fountain is open; how canst thou refuse To wash and be cleansed in his pardoning blood? 3 Delay not, delay not, O sinner, to come; For Mercy still lingers, and calls thee to-day; Her voice is not heard in the vale of the tomb; Her message unheeded will soon pass away. 4 Delay not, delay not, the Spirit of grace Long grieved and resisted may take his sad flight, And leave thee in darkness to finish thy race, To sink in the gloom of eternity's night. 5 Delay not, delay not, the hour is at hand, The earth shall dissolve, and the heaven's shall fade, The dead, small and great, in the Judgment shall stand; What power then, O sinner! will lend thee its aid? S. J. Vail

1818 - 1883 Hymnal Title: Chapel Melodies Arranger of "HINTON" in Chapel Melodies In his youth Silas Jones Vail learned the hatter's trade at Danbury, Ct. While still a young man, he went to New York and took employment in the fashionable hat store of William H. Beebe. Later he established himself in business as a hatter at 118 Fulton Street, where he was for many years successful. But the conditions of trade changed, and he could not change with them. After his failure in 1869 or 1870 he devoted his entire time and attention to music. He was the writer of much popular music for use in churches and Sunday schools. Pieces of music entitled "Scatter Seeds of Kindness," "Gates Ajar," "Close to Thee," "We Shall Sleep, but not Forever," and "Nothing but Leaves" were known to all church attendants twenty years ago. Fanny Crosby, the blind authoress, wrote expressly for him many of the verses he set to music. --Vail, Henry H. (Henry Hobart). Genealogy of some of the Vail family descended from Jeremiah Vail at Salem, Mass., 1639, p. 234.

Anonymous

Person Name: Anon. Hymnal Title: Dyer's Psalmist Author of "Delay not, delay not, O sinner, draw near" in Dyer's Psalmist In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.
