Yesterday, with exultation

Author: John Mason Neale; Adam of St. Victor Hymnal: Hymns of the Eastern Church (5th ed.) #E1 (1866) Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: Yesterday, with exultation Joined the world in celebration Of her promised Saviour’s birth: Yesterday the Angel nation Poured the strains of jubilation O’er the Monarch born on earth. But today, o’er death victorious, By his faith and actions glorious, By his miracles renowned, Dared the Deacon Protomartyr Earthly life for Heav’n to barter, Faithful midst the faithless found. Forward, champion, in thy quarrel! Certain of a certain laurel, Holy Stephen, persevere! Perjured witnesses confounding, Satan’s Synagogue astounding By thy doctrine true and clear. Lo! in Heav’n thy Witness liveth; Bright and faithful proof He giveth Of His Martyr’s full success: Thou by name a Crown impliest; Meetly then in pangs thou diest For the Crown of Righteousness! For a crown that fadeth never, Bear the torturer’s brief endeavour, Victory waits to end the strife. Death shall be thy birth’s beginning, And life’s losing be the winning Of a true and better life. Whom the HOLY GHOST endueth, Whom celestial light imbueth, Stephen penetrates the skies: There GOD’s fullest glory viewing, There his victor strength renewing, For his near reward he sighs. See, as Jewish foes invade thee, See, how JESUS stands to aid thee: Stands, to guard His champion’s death! Cry that opened Heav’n is shown thee: Cry that JESUS waits to own thee: Cry it with thy latest breath! As the dying Martyr kneeleth, For his murderers he appealeth, And his prayer their pardon sealeth, For their madness grieving sore; Then to CHRIST he sleepeth sweetly, Who His pattern kept completely, And with CHRIST he reigneth meetly, Martyr first-fruits, evermore! All Ye Who Like the Birds Can Soar

Author: N. F. S. Grundtvig Hymnal: Hymnal for Church and Home #13 (1927) Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: 1 All ye who like the birds can soar, Who earth and sea and sky explore, Lift up your hearts in singing; Give praise to God, for good is He And by His grace will set you free Who still to dust are clinging. 2 My soul, thou art of noble birth, Thy thoughts rise upward from the earth As if on eagle pinions. Most lofty is thy upward flight When thou ascendest, robed in light, To heaven's fair dominions. 3 Thou canst not find on land or sea a creature that compares with thee In need of grace from heaven; God verily had thee in mind When through His Son He saved mankind And thou to Him wert given. 4 Awake, my soul, lift up thy voice, Do thou in Christ, the Lord, rejoice And laud Him as thy Savior, Who from the Father's throne above Bestows on thee His wondrous love, His grace and every favor. 5 Go tell it to the birds that fly And to the angels in the sky, Whose song so happy soundeth, That thou like them with joyful zest Wilt praise thy God and call Him blest Whose grace to all aboundeth. Vanish now all sinful dreaming

Author: Thomas Kingo, 1634-1703; J. C. Aaberg Hymnal: Hymns and Hymnwriters of Denmark #15 (1945) Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: Vanish now all sinful dreaming, Let the joy from heaven streaming Occupy my soul and mind. Watch, my spirit, and prepare thee, Lest the cunning foe ensnare thee When repose hath made thee blind. Sleep now in God’s care appeasing. While the noise of day is ceasing, Lean upon thy Savior’s breast. He will guard thee through the somber Night and make thy final slumber Quiet, peaceful, happy, blest. Languages: English

Softly now the day is ending

Author: Thomas Kingo, 1634-1703; J. C. Aaberg Hymnal: Hymns and Hymnwriters of Denmark #16 (1945) Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: Softly now the day is ending, Night o’er hill and vale descending, I will kneel before Thee, Lord. Unto Thee my thanks I render That Thou didst in mercy tender Life and peace to me accord. May Thy church Thy peace inherit, Guide our leaders by Thy spirit, Grant our country strength and peace. To the straying, sad and dreary, To each Christian faint or weary Grant Thou solace and surcease. Keep me, Jesus, while I slumber! From my perils without number, Shield me, Master, in Thy might, That, released from sin and sorrow, I may sing this song tomorrow: Jesus was my Sun this night. Languages: English

O Father! send Thy Spirit down

Author: Paul Gerhardt; John Kelly Hymnal: Paul Gerhardt's Spiritual Songs #18 (1867) Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: O Father! send Thy Spirit down, Whom we are bidden by Thy Son To seek, from Thy high heaven; We ask as He taught us to pray, And let us ne’er unheard away From ’fore Thy throne be driven. No mortal man upon the earth Is of this gift so noble worth, No merit we’ve to gain it; Here only grace availeth aught, That Jesus Christ for us hath bought, His tears and death obtain it. O Father! much it grieves Thy mind Us in such woful plight to find, As Adam’s fall hath brought us; The evil spirit’s pow’r, this fall Hath brought on him, and on us all, But Christ to save hath sought us. To our salvation, Lord, we cleave, That we are Thine in Christ believe, From Him nought shall us sever; And through His death and precious blood, Our mansions fair, and highest good, We look for, doubting never. This is a work of grace indeed, The Holy Spirit’s strength we need, Our pow’r is unavailing; Our faith and our sincerity Would soon, O Lord! in ashes lie, Were not Thy help unfailing. Of faith Thy Spirit keeps the light, Though all the world against us fight, And storm with every weapon. Although the prince of this world too, May take the field to lay us low, No ill through him can happen. The Spirit’s is the winning side, And where He helps, the battle’s tide Assuredly abateth. What’s Satan’s might and majesty? It falleth when His standard high The Spirit elevateth. The chains of hell He rends in twain, Consoles and frees the heart again From everything that grieveth; And when misfortunes o’er us low’r He shields us better in their hour, Than ever heart conceiveth. The bitter cross He maketh sweet, In gloom His light our eyes doth greet, Care of His sheep He taketh, Holds over us the shield, and when Night falls upon His flock, He then To rest in peace us maketh. The Spirit God gives from above Directeth all who truly love In ways of safety ever; He guides our goings every day, From paths of bliss to turn away Our feet permits us never. He maketh fit, and furnishes With needed gifts for service those Who here God’s house are rearing, Adorns their minds and mouths and hearts, And light to them for us imparts, What’s dark to us thus clearing. Our hearts He opens secretly When they His word so faithfully As precious seed are sowing; He giveth pow’r to it, where’er It takes root, tending it with care, And waters it when growing. He teacheth us the fear of God, Loves purity, makes His abode The soul that sin refuseth; Who contrite are, virtue revere, Repent, and turn to Him in fear And love, He ever chooseth. He’s true, and true doth aye abide, In death’s dark hour He’s at our side, When all from us recedeth; He sootheth our last agony, Up to the halls of bliss on high In joy and trust He leadeth. Oh! happy are the souls and bless’d, Who while on earth permit this Guest To make in them His dwelling; Who now receive Him joyfully, He’ll take up to God’s house on high, Their souls with rapture filling. Now, Father, who all good dost give, Our pray’r hear, may we all receive From Thee this priceless blessing; Thy Spirit give, that here He may Rule us, and there in endless day Our souls be aye refreshing. Day Is Breaking, Night Is Ended

Author: Casper Johannes Boye Hymnal: Hymnal for Church and Home #24 (1927) Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: 1 Day is breaking, night is ended, And the Lord's day hath ascended Over church and countryside; As this day of grace increases, Light from God the heart appeases, Heaven’s portal opens wide, Heaven's portal opens wide. 2 Oh, what joy this day is bringing, When the solemn bells are ringing, Calling men to pray'r and praise; All the angel host rejoices, And with gladsome, mellow voices Praises God for light and grace, Praises God for light and grace. 3 Sin and death, with fear and sorrow, And the burden of the morrow Shall not fill my heart with care; Unto all in tribulation Doth the Lord who wrought salvation, On this day His peace declare, On this day His peace declare. 4 Be it hushed in solemn stillness, Must I weep in grief and illness And confess my sin and shame, It is blessed to be weeping, When the yearning heart is reaping Grace and peace in Jesus’ name. 5 Oh, Thou Fount of grace unbounded, Who the wise men hast confounded, Whom but faith can comprehend, In Thy love my soul reposes, Heaven’s portal never closes, Till before Thy throne I stand. At the Cross, Her Station Keeping

Author: Edward Caswall Hymnal: The Cyber Hymnal #26 Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: 1. At the cross, her station keeping, Stood the mournful mother weeping, Where He hung, the dying Lord; For her soul of joy bereavèd, Bowed with anguish, deeply grievèd, Felt the sharp and piercing sword. 2. Oh, how sad and sore distressèd Now was she, that mother blessèd Of the sole begotten One; Deep the woe of her affliction, When she saw the crucifixion Of her ever glorious Son. 3. Who, on Christ’s dear mother gazing Pierced by anguish so amazing Born of woman, would not weep? Who, on Christ’s dear mother thinking Such a cup of sorrow drinking Would not share her sorrows deep? 4. For His people’s sins chastisèd, She beheld her Son despisèd, Scourged, and crowned with thorns entwined; Saw Him then from judgment taken, And in death by all forsaken, Till His Spirit He resigned. 5. Jesu, may her deep devotion Stir in me the same emotion, Fount of love, Redeemer kind, That my heart fresh ardor gaining, And a purer love attaining, May with Thee acceptance find.
