Betty Pulkingham

1928 - 2019 Hymnal Number: 13 Arranger of "[Sanna, sananina, sanna, sanna, sanna]" in Global Songs 2 Betty Carr Pulkingham was born in 1928 in Burlington, North Carolina. She received a B.S. in Music in 1949 from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro and she did graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music. She was Instructor of Music Theory at the University of Texas. In 1951, she married a seminarian Graham Pulkingham. They ministered together in various places in the U.S., England and Scotland; they were founding members of the Community of Celebration, an Anglican religious order. She travelled widely with "The Fisherfolk," an outreach music ministry connected with the Community of Celebration. Betty Pulkingham was a well known composer and arranger. She co-edited and published a number of songbooks and books on worship; and served on the Episcopal Church's Standing Commission on Church Music from 1988-1994. She and her husband returned to Burlington and then she later moved to Austin, Texas to live with family. She died in Austin, May 9, 2019 at the age of 90. Pablo D. Sosa

1933 - 2020 Person Name: Pablo Sosa Hymnal Number: 21 Adapter of "Miren qué bueno" in Global Songs 2 Pablo Sosa (b. 1933 - d. 2020) grew up and was educated in Argentina, the U.S. (Westminster Choir College), and Germany. For years he pastored a large Methodist congregation in Buenos Aires, Argentina while composing songs, leading choirs, editing hymnals, producing religious broadcasts, and teaching liturgy and hymnology at a seminary. Meanwhile, life in Argentina pushed him to question his assumptions about what’s best for congregational singing. During Argentina’s “dirty war,” two young women from his church were disappeared, possibly for working among the poor. As Catholic and Protestant churches hesitated whether to speak out, remain silent, or support the government, many people lost faith. Economic meltdown after the war plunged many middle-class Argentinians into poverty. Sosa’s growing social awareness widened his vision for “lifting up hope with a song.” He often describes worship as “the fiesta of the faithful,” where all are welcome and all music is seen as “part of the ‘song of the earth,’ which answers the psalmist’s call ‘Sing joyfully to God, all the earth!’ (Psalm 98:4).” Whether in his home church, Iglesia Evangélica Metodista La Tercera (Third Methodist Church) in Buenos Aires, or at churches or conferences around the world, he urges people, “Put your body into worship!” And he reminds them of the biblical connection between justice and worship. Carolina Sandell

1823 - 1903 Person Name: Carolina Sandell Berg Hymnal Number: 44 Author of "Day by Day" in Global Songs 2 Caroline W. Sandell Berg (b. Froderyd, Sweden, 1832; d. Stockholm, Sweden, 1903), is better known as Lina Sandell, the "Fanny Crosby of Sweden." "Lina" Wilhelmina Sandell Berg was the daughter of a Lutheran pastor to whom she was very close; she wrote hymns partly to cope with the fact that she witnessed his tragic death by drowning. Many of her 650 hymns were used in the revival services of Carl O. Rosenius, and a number of them gained popularity particularly because of the musical settings written by gospel singer Oskar Ahnfelt. Jenny Lind, the famous Swedish soprano, underwrote the cost of publishing a collection of Ahnfelt's music, Andeliga Sänger (1850), which consisted mainly of Berg's hymn texts. Bert Polman

Noel Dexter

1938 - 2019 Hymnal Number: 22 Composer of "[The right hand of God is writing in our land]" in Global Songs 2 Noel Dexter was born on December 21, 1938 and grew up in Port Antonio, Portland, Jamaica. He studied ethnomusicology and church music at the University of West Indies, in the United Kingdom and in the United States. He founded and led the Kingston Singers as well as other theatrical productions. For 25 years he was director of music at the University of West Indies, Mona, While there he lead the University Singers, until 2012, when he retired. Oscar Ahnfelt

1813 - 1882 Person Name: Oskar Ahnfelt Hymnal Number: 44 Composer of "[Day by day, your mercies, Lord, attend me]" in Global Songs 2 Oscar Ahnfelt (1813 -1882) was a Swedish singer and composer. He wrote the music for many of Lina Sandell’s hymns. A pietist, he raised some concern in the State-church, but his music was apparently so popular, King Karl XV gave him permission to play and sing in both of his kingdoms. Ahnfelt’s music has spread throughout the world; two of his best-known songs are “Children of the Heavenly Father” and “Day by Day.” Laura de Jong

Bernard Kyamanywa

1938 - 2021 Hymnal Number: 4 Author of "Christ Has Arisen, Alleluia" in Global Songs 2 “Christ Has Arisen, Alleluia” comes to us from African Lutheranism. Rev. Bernard Kyamanywa wrote the original Swahili text while he was in seminary in Tanzania. He wrote it in a very African style, envisioning a story-teller and congregation responding; the story- teller presents the simple story of the Easter Gospel, and the congregation responds with the refrain.
