His life’s work includes two sons (Simon and Theo), two books (The Art of Worship, 2006, and Essential Worship, 2016), and hundreds of compositions, songs, and arrangements in a dizzying variety of styles. Charitie Lees Smith

1841 - 1923 Person Name: Charitie L. Bancroft, 1841-1892 Hymnal Number: 28 Author of "Before the Throne of God Above" in Contemporary Songs for Worship Bancroft, Charitie Lees, née Smith, daughter of the Rev. Sidney Smith, D.D., Rector of Drumragh, County Tyrone, Ireland; was born at Bloomfield, Merrion, in the county of Dublin, June 21,1841; and married, in 1869, to Arthur E. Bancroft. Her hymns have appeared in periodicals, Lyra Britannica, Bishop Ryle's Spiritual Songs, and other collections, and also as leaflets. The following have come into common usage:— 1. O for the [a] robes [robe] of whiteness. Heaven desired. This favorite children's hymn was 1st pub. as a leaflet in 1860. In 1867 it was included in Lyra Britannica, and thence has passed into several collections in Great Britain and America. 2. The King of glory standeth. Christ the Saviour. Contributed in 7 stanzas of 8 1ines to the Lyra Britannica, 1867, and entitled "Mighty to save." In the Hymns & Songs of Praise, N. Y., 1874, No. 1196, it begins with stanza iii., "He comes in bloodstained garments." 3. Before the throne of God above. The Advocate. Dated 1863, and given in Spurgeon's Our Own Hymn Book, 1806, Laudes Domini, N. Y., 1884. In 1867 Mrs. Bancroft's hymns were collected and published as Within the Veil, by C. L. Keith Getty

b. 1974 Hymnal Number: 20 Author of "In Christ Alone" in Contemporary Songs for Worship Keith Getty (b. December 16, 1974) is a world-renowned modern hymn writer. Keith developed a passion for writing good songs for the church in his twenties, and began writing for his small Baptist church. Stuart Townend

Hymnal Number: 20 Author of "In Christ Alone" in Contemporary Songs for Worship Stuart Townend (b. 1963) grew up in West Yorkshire, England, the youngest son of an Anglican vicar. He started learning piano at a young age, and began writing music at age 22. He has produced albums for Keith Routledge and Vinesong, among many others, and has also released eight solo albums to date. Some of his better-known songs include “How Deep the Father’s Love,” “The King of Love,” and “The Power of the Cross.” He continues to work closely with friends Keith and Kristyn Getty, and is currently a worship leader in Church of Christ the King in Brighton, where he lives with wife Caroline, and children Joseph, Emma and Eden. Graham Kendrick

b. 1950 Hymnal Number: 15 Author of "Knowing you, Jesus" in Contemporary Songs for Worship Graham Kendrick (b. England, August 2, 1950), the son of a Baptist minister in Northamptonshire, is one of the most prolific Christian singer-songwriters in the United Kingdom. He’s written music for over thirty years, and to date has released thirty-eight albums. He is best known for his songs “Shine, Jesus, Shine,” “Knowing You,” and “The Servant King.” Kendrick has received honorary doctorates in divinity from Brunel University and Wycliffe College. In 1987 he helped co-found the March for Jesus, which today is a global phenomenon in which Christians take their faith to the streets in a celebration of Christ. In 1995 Kendrick received a Dove Award for his international work, and he remains an active advocate for Compassion International, which is a Christian child sponsorship organization dedicated to the long-term development of children living in poverty around the world, and also is a contributor to CompassionArt, an organization with the aim of generating income from works of art to assist in the relief of suffering around the planet. She is also a vocalist and has been featured on number of albums. She also is a choir director and gives piano and voice lessons. b. 1934 Hymnal Number: 14 Author of "I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light" in Contemporary Songs for Worship Kathleen Thomerson is Organist and Music Director at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas. She was born in Tennessee and grew up in Mississippi, California, and Texas. College music study was at the Universities of Colorado and Texas, the Flemish Royal Conservatory in Antwerp, and privately in Paris. Before retirement in Austin, she lived in Collinsville, Illinois, when her husband was a biology professor at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Her best-known hymn text is "I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light," set to her hymn tune HOUSTON. --www.morningstarmusic.com

Billy James Foote

Hymnal Number: 12 Author of "You Are My King (Amazing Love)" in Contemporary Songs for Worship Billy Foote started leading worship in 1990, right after graduating from East Texas Baptist University. At first it was just him and his guitar, but after a few years he added a bass player and a drummer, and his wife Cindy joined on vocals. In the late 90s, he began to write music. Around 2000, Foote developed a neurological condition called hyper-dysphonia, which greatly affected his vocals. Cindy took over singing the lead vocals when touring or recording, but Foote continued to write. Some of his more well-known songs are "Amazing Love (You are My King)," "Sing to the King," and "You are God Alone." Laura de Jong

Matt Redman

b. 1974 Hymnal Number: 19 Author of "Blessed Be Your Name" in Contemporary Songs for Worship Matt Redman (b. February 14, 1974) began leading worship full-time at age 20, serving churches in Chorleywood, Brighton, West Sussex, and Atlanta, Georgia, where he worked with Chris Tomlin and Louie Giglio for the Passion Conferences. He is known for songs such as “The Heart of Worship,” “Better is One Day,” and “Blessed Be Your Name.” His 2012 song “10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord),” co-written with Jonas Myrin, won two Grammy awards in 2013. Redman has written a number of books, including Mirror Ball and The Unquenchable Worshipper. He and his wife Beth have five children, and are currently based at St. Peters Church in Brighton, England. Laura de Jong
