Psalm 146

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 520 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 146 First Line: I'll praise my Maker with my breath Lyrics: I'll praise my Maker with my breath, And when my voice is lost in death, Praise shall employ my nobler powers My days of praise shall ne'er be past, While life, and thought, and being last, Or immortality endures. Why should I make a man my trust? Princes must die and turn to dust; Vain is the help of flesh and blood: Their breath departs, their pomp, and power, And thoughts, all vanish in an hour, Nor can they make their promise good. Happy the man whose hopes rely On Isr'el's God: he made the sky, And earth, and seas, with all their train: His truth for ever stands secure; He saves th' oppressed, he feeds the poor, And none shall find his promise vain. The Lord hath eyes to give the blind; The Lord supports the sinking mind; He sends the lab'ring conscience peace; He helps the stranger in distress, The widow and the fatherless, And grants the pris'ner sweet release. He loves his saints, he knows them well, But turns the wicked down to hell; Thy God, O Zion! ever reigns: Let every tongue, let every age, In this exalted work engage; Praise him in everlasting strains. I'll praise him while he lends me breath; And when my voice is lost in death, Praise shall employ my nobler powers: My days of praise shall ne'er be past, While life, and thought, and being last, Or immortality endures. Topics: Goodness of God; Souls in separate state; Creatures no trust in them; Mercies and truth of God; Afflicted and tempted, supported; Truth grace, and protection; Princes vain; Trust in the creatures vain; Faithfulness Of God; God goodness and truth; God kind to his people; God worthy of all praise

Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 28 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 146 Lyrics: 1 Hallelujah, praise Jehovah, O my soul, Jehovah praise; I will sing the glorious praises of my God through all my days. Put no confidence in princes, nor for help on man depend; he shall die, to dust returning, and his purposes shall end. 2 Happy is the man that chooses Israel's God to be his aid; he is blessed whose hope of blessing on the Lord his God is stayed. Heav'n and earth the Lord created, seas and all that they contain; he delivers from oppression, righteousness he will maintain. 3 Food he daily gives the hungry, Sets the mourning prisoner free, raises those bowed down with anguish, makes the sightless eye to see. Well Jehovah loves the righteous, and the stranger he befriends, helps the fatherless and widow, judgment on the wicked sends. 4 Hallelujah, praise Jehovah, O my soul, Jehovah praise; I will sing the glorious praises of my God through all my days. God of my life! through all my days

Author: Doddridge Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 239 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 146 Lyrics: 1 God of my life! through all my days I'll tune the grateful notes of praise; The song shall wake with opening light, And warble to the silent night. 2 When anxious cares would break my rest, And griefs would tear my throbbing breast, The notes of praise ascending high Shall check the murmur and the sigh. 3 When death o'er nature shall prevail, And all the powers of language fail, Joy through my swimming eyes shall break, And mean the thanks I can not speak. 4 But oh! when that last conflict's o'er, And I am chained to earth no more, With what glad accents shall I rise To join the music of the skies! 5 Then shall I learn the exalted strains That echo through the heavenly plains: And emulate with joy unknown The glowing seraphs round thy throne. Topics: General Praise; Song of Gratitude and Praise

Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above

Author: Johann J. Schütz, 1640-1690; Frances Cox, 1812-1897 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 189 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 146:10 Lyrics: 1 Sing praise to God who reigns above, the God of all creation, the God of power, the God of love, the God of our salvation. My soul with comfort rich he fills, and every grief he gently stills: to God all praise and glory! 2 What God’s almighty power has made, in mercy he is keeping; by morning glow or evening shade his eye is never sleeping. And where he rules in kingly might, there all is just and all is right: to God all praise and glory! 3 We sought the Lord in our distress; O God, in mercy hear us. Our Savior saw our helplessness and came with peace to cheer us. For this we thank and praise the Lord, who is by one and all adored: to God all praise and glory! 4 Let all who name Christ’s holy name give God the praise and glory. Let all who know his power proclaim aloud the wondrous story. Cast every idol from its throne; the Lord is God, and he alone: to God all praise and glory! O praise the Lord, and thou, my Soul

Appears in 18 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 146 Lyrics: 1,2 O praise the Lord, and thou, my soul, for ever bless his Name: His wond'rous Love, while Life shall last, my constant Praise shall claim. 3 On Kings, the greatest Sons of Men, let none for Aid rely; then cannot save in dang'rous Times, nor timely Help apply 4 Depriv'd of Breath, to Dust thy turn, and there neglected lie, And all their Thoughts and vain Designs together with them die. 5 Then happy he, who Jacob's God for his Protector takes; Who still, with well-plac'd Hope, the Lord his constant Refuge makes. 6 The Lord, who made both Heav'n and Earth, and all that they contain, Will never quit his stedfast Truth, nor make his Promise vain. 7 The Poor opprest, from all their Wrongs are eas'd by his Decree; He gives the hungry needful food, and sets the Pris'ners free. 8 By him the Blind receive their Sight, the Weak and Fall'n he rears: With kind Regard and tender Love he for the Righteous cares. 9 The Strangers he preserves from Harm, the Orphan kindly treats, Defends the Widow, and the Wiles of wicked Men defeats. 10 The God, that does in Sion dwell, is our eternal King; From Age to Age his Reign endures, let all his Praises sing.

Yea, I will laud Him until death. With songs and anthems I'll come before Him As long as He doth give me breath. From Him my life and all things came; Bless, O my soul, His holy name. Allelujah, allelujah! 2 Trust not in princes, they are but mortal; Earth-born they are and soon decay. Naught are their counsels at life's last portal, When the dark grave doth claim its prey. Since mortals can no help afford, Trust ye in Christ, our God and Lord. Allelujah, allelujah! 3 Blessed, yea, blessed is he forever Whose help is in the Lord most high, Whom from the saving faith naught can sever, And who in hope to Christ draws nigh. To all who trust in Him, our Lord, Counsel and aid He doth afford. Allelujah, allelujah! 4 God the Almighty, the great Creator, Ruler of sky and land and sea, All things ordained, and sooner or later They come to pass unfailingly. His rule is over rich and poor, His promise ever standeth sure. Allelujah, allelujah! 5 Penitent sinners, for mercy crying, Pardon and peace from Him obtain; Ever the wants of the poor supplying, Their faithful God He doth remain. He helps His children in distress, The widows and the fatherless. Allelujah, allelujah! 6 Praise, all you nations, the name so holy Of Him who doth such wondrous things!
