Timothy Dudley-Smith

Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Educated at Pembroke College and Ridley Hall, Cambridge, Dudley-Smith has served the Church of England since his ordination in 1950. He has occupied a number of church positions, including parish priest in the diocese of Southwark (1953-1962), archdeacon of Norwich (1973-1981), and bishop of Thetford, Norfolk, from 1981 until his retirement in 1992. He also edited a Christian magazine, Crusade, which was founded after Billy Graham's 1955 London crusade. Dudley-Smith began writing comic verse while a student at Cambridge; he did not begin to write hymns until the 1960s. Many of his several hundred hymn texts have been collected in Lift Every Heart: Collected Hymns 1961-1983 (1984), Songs of Deliverance: Thirty-six New Hymns (1988), and A Voice of Singing (1993). The writer of Christian Literature and the Church (1963), Someone Who Beckons (1978), and Praying with the English Hymn Writers (1989), Dudley-Smith has also served on various editorial committees, including the committee that published Psalm Praise (1973). Michael Morgan

b. 1948 Scripture: Isaiah 43 Author of "Those Who Place on God Reliance (Psalm 125)" in Lift Up Your Hearts Michael Morgan (b. 1948) is a church musician, Psalm scholar, and collector of English Bibles and Psalters from Atlanta, Georgia. After almost 40 years, he now serves as Organist Emeritus for Atlanta’s historic Central Presbyterian Church, and as Seminary Musician at Columbia Theological Seminary. He holds degrees from Florida State University and Atlanta University, and did post-graduate study with composer Richard Purvis in San Francisco. He has played recitals, worship services, and master classes across the U. S., and in England, France, Spain, Switzerland, and Germany. He is author of the Psalter for Christian Worship (1999; rev. 2010), and a regular contributor in the field of psalmody (most recently to the Reformed collections Psalms for All Seasons and Lift Up Your Hearts, and the new Presbyterian hymnal, Glory to God). Henry Montagu Butler

1833 - 1918 Person Name: Henry Montague Butler (1833-1918) Scripture: Isaiah 43:18-19 Author of "'Lift up your hearts!' We lift them, Lord, to thee" in Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Butler, Henry Montagu, D.D., was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and graduated B.A. as Senior Classic in 1855, and became a Fellow of his college in 1855. Taking Holy Orders in 1859, he became Head Master of Harrow School in 1859. This position he held until 1885, when he was preferred to the Deanery of Gloucester. He held the deanery for a short time only, and became Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, on the death of Dr. W. H. Thompson in 1886. Dr. Butler has also held the important appointments of Hon. Chaplain to the Queen; Examining Chaplain to Archbishops Tait and Benson; Select Preacher at Oxford, 1882; and Preb. of Holborn in St. Paul's Cathedral. Dr. Butler edited the 3rd edition of Hymns for the Chapel of Harrow School, 1865, and the 4th edition, 1881. To the Harrow Hymn Book Dr. Butler contributed:— 1. Art thou the Healer that should come. St. John Baptist. 2. Ask and ye surely shall receive. Prayer. Last St. by J. Montgomery. 3. Jesus died for us and rose again. Death and Burial. 4. Lovest thou Me ? the risen Saviour cried. St. Peter. 5. 0 merciful and holy. Founder's Day. 6. Rejoice today with one accord. Founder's Day. 7. The night of agony hath passed. Good Friday. 8. Where shall we find our mightiest saint? St. Paul. Of these Nos. 2 and 3 were given in the 3rd edition of the Harrow Hymn Book, 1865, and the rest were added in 1881. Nos. 3, 5, 6 and 8 are also in Hymns for the Use of Sherborne School, 1888, Nos. 5 and 6 being much altered. Walter Greatorex

1877 - 1949 Person Name: Walter Greatorex (1877-1949) Scripture: Isaiah 43:18-19 Composer of "WOODLANDS" in Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Walter Greatorex (b. Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England, 1877; d. Bournemouth, Hampshire, England, 1949) was director of music at Gresham's School, Holt, Norfolk, where from 1911-1936. Before that he served as assistant music master at Uppingham School in Rutland (1900-1910). Greatorex's musical education began as a chorister at King's College, Cambridge, England, and he received his university music training at St. John's College, Cambridge. Bert Polman

Brian A. Wren

b. 1936 Person Name: Brian Wren Scripture: Isaiah 43:16-19 Author of "This Is a Day of New Beginnings" in Moravian Book of Worship Brian Wren (b. Romford, Essex, England, 1936) is a major British figure in the revival of contemporary hymn writing. He studied French literature at New College and theology at Mansfield College in Oxford, England. Ordained in 1965, he was pastor of the Congregational Church (now United Reformed) in Hockley and Hawkwell, Essex, from 1965 to 1970. He worked for the British Council of Churches and several other organizations involved in fighting poverty and promoting peace and justice. This work resulted in his writing of Education for Justice (1977) and Patriotism and Peace (1983). With a ministry throughout the English-speaking world, Wren now resides in the United States where he is active as a freelance lecturer, preacher, and full-time hymn writer. His hymn texts are published in Faith Looking Forward (1983), Praising a Mystery (1986), Bring Many Names (1989), New Beginnings (1993), and Faith Renewed: 33 Hymns Reissued and Revised (1995), as well as in many modern hymnals. He has also produced What Language Shall I Borrow? (1989), a discussion guide to inclusive language in Christian worship. Bert Polman
