1834 - 1907 Person Name: H. R. P. Author of "Come, sinner, come" in The Kingdom of Praise Palmer, Horatio Richmond, MUS. DOC, was born April 26, 1834. He is the author of several works on the theory of music; and the editor of some musical editions of hymnbooks. To the latter he contributed numerous tunes, some of which have attained to great popularity, and 5 of which are in I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, London, 1881. His publications include Songs of Love for the Bible School; and Book of Anthems, the combined sale of which has exceeded one million copies. As a hymnwriter he is known by his "Yield not to temptation," which was written in 1868, and published in the National Sunday School Teachers' Magazine, from which it passed, with music by the author, into his Songs of Love, &c, 1874, and other collections. Helen C. A. Dixon

1877 - 1969 Person Name: Mrs. C. M. Alexander Author of "While Jesus Whispers to You" in Church Hymnal, Mennonite Dixon, Helen Cadbury Alexander (b. 1877, Birmingham, Eng.; d. Mar. 1, 1969, Birmingham, Eng.) was the daughter of Richard Cadbury, a prominent British industrialist and philanthropist who was a member of the Quaker fellowship and keenly interested in evangelical mission work; attended the university and spent some time in Germany, studying music and language; in 1904 married Charles M. Alexander, songleader with evangelist R. A. Torrey; traveled with her husband and assisted him in his worldwide ministry with both Torrey and J. Wilbur Chapman (q.v.) until his death in 1920; assisted J. Kennedy Maclean in writing the biography, Charles M. Alexander: A Romance of Song and Soul-Winning, 1921; in 1924 married Amsji C. Dixon. William Ellsworth Witter

1854 - 1954 Person Name: Will E. Witter Author of "While Jesus whispers to you" in The Seventh-Day Adventist Hymn and Tune Book Witter, Will Ellsworth, was born Dec. 9, 1854, near La Grange, New York, and educated at the Genessee State Normal School, New York, and the University of Rochester. From the latter he passed in 1880 to the Rochester Baptist Theological Seminary, and in 1884 he entered the Baptist Ministry. He has written several songs and poems, one of which:— While Jesus whispers to you (The Divine Call) has come into somewhat prominent use. It was written in July 1878, and originated mainly in the great anxiety of the author respecting two of his pupils. In 1878 it was set to music by H. R. Palmer, and included in his Book of Anthems, 1878: from whence it passed into Good as Gold, and I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, London 1881. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

Carey Bonner

1859 - 1938 Author of "Gently a voice is pleading" in The Sunday School Hymnary Pseudonyms: E. Rawdon Bailey, A. Bryce, Nora C. E. Byrne, R. Y. Harding, Ernest B. Leslie, Frank Ernest Newton, Edwyn Vincent, Hermann von Müller ============ Bonner, Carey, was born in Southwark, Surrey, May 1, 1859. He entered the Baptist ministry after studying at Rawdon College, and held pastorates at Sale, Manchester (1884-95) and Portland, Southampton (1895-1900). Since Sept. 1900 he has been Secretary of the Sunday School Union. He edited words and music of the Garland of New Sunday School Music (issued in parts, 1881 and 1882; complete edition 1886), and the S. S. Hymnary, 1905; and the music of the Christian Endeavour Hymnal, 1896, and the Junior Hymnal, 1906. The longer hymns contributed by him to these works include:— 1. Father, hear Thy children's voices. [S. S. Anniversary.] Written 1905 for a Sunday School Festival at Toledo, Ohio, 1905, as above, No. 362. 2. Gently a voice is pleading. [Come to Jesus.] Written 1902, first published in his Hymns for the Mission, 1902, No. 41; 1905, No. 225. 3. God of little children. [Reverence.] 1882, as above; edition 1886, No. 39. Also in School Hymns, 1891, and Junior Hymnal, 1906. 4. In hope, and love, and steadfast faith. [For Conventions.] Written 1896; first published 1896, as above, No. 369. 5. Now when from one another parting. [Parting Hymn.] Written 1896; 1896, as above, No. 383. 6. We join our hearts and voices. [The Children’s Friend,] 1882, as above; edition 1886, No. 25.
