1822 - 1881 Person Name: M. Mason Author of "Silent Night" Mason, Marie J. Miss Mason, who desires to remain unknown, contributed the popular hymn, "Saviour, who died for me" (Self-Consecration), to the Christian Songs for the Sunday Schools, N. Y., 1872, p. 156, in 4 stanzas of 8 lines. It was written in 1871. Born in 1822.

Author of "Silent Night" in Triumphant Songs No.2 In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

Died: May 4, 1943, Cleveland, Ohio.
Ira’s father was song writer Elisha Hoffman. His middle name was his mother’s maiden name. At age nine, he is said to have written the music for his father’s song "The Little Pilgrim;" as an adult, he was a composer, arranger, and music editor. His works include:
