Author of "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" in The Cyber Hymnal In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

Albert E. Brumley

1905 - 1977 Arranger of "WHOLE WORLD (Brumley)" in Radio Favorites Born: October 29, 1905, near Spiro, Oklahoma. Died: November 15, 1977, Springfield, Missouri. Buried: Fox Cemetery, Powell, Missouri. Brumley attended the Hartford Musical Institute in Hartford, Arkansas, and sang with the Hartford Quartet. He went on to teach at singing schools in the Ozarks, and lived most of his life in Powell, Missouri. He worked for 34 years a staff writer for the Hartford and Stamps/Baxter publishing companies, then founded the Albert E. Brumley & Sons Music Company and Country Gentlemen Music, and bought the Hartford Music Company. J. Jefferson Cleveland

1937 - 1986 Person Name: J. Jefferson Cleveland, 1937- Harmonizer of "[He's got the whole world in His hands]" in Songs of Zion Judge Jefferson Cleveland (1937-1986) was one of the most important scholars and editors of African-American congregational song of the 20th century. Along with Verogla Nix, he edited what is arguably the most groundbreaking collection of African-American song in the last half of the 20th century, Songs of Zion (1981/1982). Lutheran hymnologist Marilyn Stulken provides a biographical sketch of Cleveland’s life and accomplishments. Born in Georgia, Cleveland graduated from Clark College (Atlanta), Illinois Wesleyan University and received his doctorate in education from Boston University. He served on the faculty of three historically black Christian colleges: Claflin College (South Carolina), Langston University (Oklahoma), and Jarvis Christian College (Texas), before teaching at the University of Massachusetts and Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. Cleveland’s musical arrangements, historical research and scholarship on the performance practice of African-American song have proven invaluable for the advancement of black gospel song, not only among African Americans, but also in Anglo hymnals to the present day. For example, Cleveland’s essay, “A Historical Account of the Hymn in the Black Worship Experience,” in Songs of Zion is a helpful introduction for laypersons and scholars alike. In addition to serving as a hymnody consultant for the United Methodist General Board of Discipleship, he toured the United States and Africa in 1981 and Europe in 1984 as a teacher, lecturer and performer. --www.umportal.org/

Harold H. DeCou

1932 - 2008 Person Name: Harold DeCou Arranger of "[He’s got the whole wide world in His hands]" in Favorites Number 5 Peoria - Harold H. DeCou, 76, of Peoria died at 7:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at his residence. He was born Oct. 7, 1932, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Harold H. and Kathrine Holbrook DeCou. He married Rose N. Layman on June 25, 1955, in Brookfield, Ill. She survives. Also surviving are his four sons, Harold H. (Nancy) DeCou III of Apple Valley, Calif., Mark T. DeCou of Peoria, Jonathan (Shari) DeCou of Muskegon, Mich., and Perry A. (Suiann) DeCou of Ramona, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He attended Temple University in Philadelphia. He was a concert artist (piano and organ), composer, arranger and orchestrator for 58 years. He served as church organist at Grace Presbyterian Church in Peoria from 1988 to 2001. He was a member of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Peoria. He is also an Honorary Fellow of Shenandoah Society Award. … Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery in Peoria. … Memorials may be made to Redeemer Presbyterian Church. Verolga Nix

1933 - 2014 Person Name: Verolga Nix, 1933- Harmonizer of "[He's got the whole world in His hands]" in Songs of Zion Verolga Nix (Apr. 6, 1933-Dec. 9, 2014) Born in Cleveland, Verolga moved with her family at an early age to Philadelphia. She studied for two years at New England Conservatory of Music and then earned a music degree from Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 1955. She was awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Bennett College in 2000. After retiring from twenty years as a full-time music teacher in Philadelphia public schools she served as minister of music at several churches in Philadelphia, trained and conducted many choirs and served as a seminar leader nationwide. She was a member of Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), National Association of Negro Musicians and the Hymn Society in U.S. and Canada. In 1980 the United Methodist Church asked her to co-edit with J. Jefferson Cleveland the supplemental hymnal Songs of Zion. She published nearly 200 original songs an arrangements. (further details in The Philadelphia Tribune, Dec.19, 2014 obituary). b. 1946 Arranger of "WHOLE WORLD" in 찬송과 예배 = Chansong gwa yebae = Come, Let Us Worship GARY ALAN SMITH (b. 1947) is a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He received his undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin majoring in voice and composition. He received two masters degrees in sacred music and theology from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where he graduated with honors. He was just 26 years of age when Hope published his first choral work, a setting of O SACRED HEAD NOW WOUNDED. His original composition F 973 ANTIPHONAL HOSANNA is the 10th best selling choral piece in the Hope catalog. A life-long United Methodist, today G. Andrew Donaldson

b. 1951 Person Name: Andrew Donaldson, 1951- Author of "Who made the earth and the heaven (He's got the whole world in his hands)" in The Book of Praise Andrew Donaldson, a composer and church musician, grew up in northern Ontario, Canada. He attended Glendon College, York University in Toronto, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1974. He went on to study classical guitar performance at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, receiving its ARCT (Associate of Royal Conservatory Teachers) degree in 1979. Since then he has worked as a composer and performer in many contexts, in both French and English. Andrew co-edited the Book of Praise (1997), Presbyterian Church in Canada, with Donald Anderson. Their company, Binary Editions, continues to administer copyright for the PCC. In 2007 he was made a Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa, by Knox College of the University of Toronto, for his body of work in congregational song in the Presbyterian Church in Canada.
