Michael Saward

1932 - 2015 Person Name: Michael Saward, b. 1932 Scripture: Ephesians 1:13-14 Author of "Baptized in Water" in With One Voice Michael John Saward (b. Blackheath, Kent, England, 1932) was residentiary Canon of St. Paul's Cathedral, London, and a church commissioner and member of the general synod of the Church of England. Educated at Eltham College, Bristol University, and Tyndale Hall, he was ordained in the Church of England in 1956. Saward served in several congregations and was radio and television officer for the Church Information Office (1967-1972). His publications include Leisure (1963), Couldn’t Care Less (1966), Don't Miss the Party (1974), and All Change (1983). Associated with the Jubilate Group for a number of years, he has written some sixty hymns and served as text editor for Hymns for Today's Church (1982). Bert Polman

Louisa M. R. Stead

1850 - 1917 Scripture: Ephesians 1:12-13 Author of "'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus" in The Worshiping Church Louisa (Louise) Maria Rouse Stead Wodehouse b. Dover, Kent, 1 February 1846 [registered Louisa Maria Rouse, but often known as Louise] d. Penkridge, Southern Rhodesia, 18 January 1917 She grew up in England, in Kent and Sussex, becoming governess to a family in Lyminge, Kent, before emigrating to America, c. 1871. While living in Cincinnati, Ohio, she attended a camp meeting in Urbana, Ohio, and wrote her first hymn, ‘Precious Saviour, thou hast saved me’, which was published in Winnowed Hymns, 1873, with music by Dora Boole. In September 1873 she married George Stead, of Hempstead, Long Island, at St Paul Methodist Episcopal Church, Cincinnati, and moved to Hempstead. Her verses, ‘Saved from the power and the bondage of sin’ were published in The Advocate of Christian Holiness, August 1875. She was apparently in England from April to July 1876, with their infant daughter, Louise, when her husband drowned in Hempstead Bay in May 1876, while saving the life of his little boy (a son from his previous marriage). In 1880, she was still living in Hempstead with Louise (aged 5), but shortly afterwards went to South Africa, where she married Robert Wodehouse in Port Elizabeth in January 1882. Her best known-hymn, ‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus’, with music by William J. Kirkpatrick, was published in Songs of Triumph, 1882. They served as missionaries in Africa for about 15 years, before returning to Long Island, USA, where he was pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church at East Meadow for several years. They returned to Africa in January 1901, to work in Umtali, Rhodesia. After retiring in 1911, she lived near Mutambara mission station, fifty miles from Umtali. Her daughter Louise (sometimes known as Lillie), followed her mother to Africa, where she married the Rev. David A. Carson, and was able to care for her mother in her later years. Evelyn Simpson-Curenton

b. 1953 Person Name: Evelyn Simpson-Curenton, b. 1953 Scripture: Ephesians 1:3-14 Arranger of "NEW BRITAIN" in Lead Me, Guide Me (2nd ed.) Evelyn Simpson Curenton (born 1953) is a leading African-American composer, pianist, organist, and vocalist. Simpson Curenton began piano lessons at age 5, began to perform with the Singing Simpsons of Philadelphia, a family group, and earned a B.M., Music Education and Voice from Temple University. She has been commissioned to write works for the American Guild of Organists, George Shirley, the late Duke Ellington, and her sister, the late Joy Simpson, arranged music for Kathleen Battle, Jessye Norman, and the Porgy and Bess Chorus of the New York Metropolitan Opera, and has performed with musical organizations such as Philadelphia's National Opera Ebony (later renamed Opera North). Based in the Washington, D.C., area, Curenton is Music Director of the Washington Performing Arts Society's Men and Women of the Gospel and an associate of the Smithsonian Institution. Martin Shaw

1875 - 1958 Person Name: Martin Shaw, 1875-1958 Scripture: Ephesians 1:9-11 Composer of "PURPOSE" in Worship (3rd ed.) Martin F. Shaw was educated at the Royal College of Music in London and was organist and choirmaster at St. Mary's, Primrose Hill (1908-1920), St. Martin's in the Fields (1920-1924), and the Eccleston Guild House (1924-1935). From 1935 to 1945 he served as music director for the diocese of Chelmsford. He established the Purcell Operatic Society and was a founder of the Plainsong and Medieval Society and what later became the Royal Society of Church Music. Author of The Principles of English Church Music Composition (1921), Shaw was a notable reformer of English church music. He worked with Percy Dearmer (his rector at St. Mary's in Primrose Hill); Ralph Vaughan Williams, and his brother Geoffrey Shaw in publishing hymnals such as Songs of Praise (1925, 1931) and the Oxford Book of Carols (1928). A leader in the revival of English opera and folk music scholarship, Shaw composed some one hundred songs as well as anthems and service music; some of his best hymn tunes were published in his Additional Tunes in Use at St. Mary's (1915). Ira David Sankey

1840 - 1908 Person Name: Ira D. Sankey Scripture: Ephesians 1:12-14 Composer of "TRUSTING JESUS" in Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) Sankey, Ira David, was born in Edinburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1840, of Methodist parents. About 1856 he removed with his parents to New Castle, Pennsylvania, where he became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Four years afterwards he became the Superintendent of a large Sunday School in which he commenced his career of singing sacred songs and solos. Mr. Moody met with him and heard him sing at the International Convention of the Young Men's Christian Association, at Indianapolis, and through Mr. Moody's persuasion he joined him in his work at Chicago. After some two or three years' work in Chicago, they sailed for England on June 7, 1872, and held their first meeting at York a short time afterwards, only eight persons being present. Their subsequent work in Great Britain and America is well known. Mr. Sankey's special duty was the singing of sacred songs and solos at religious gatherings, a practice which was in use in America for some time before he adopted it. His volume of Sacred Songs and Solos is a compilation from various sources, mainly American and mostly in use before. Although known as Sankey and Moody’s Songs, only one song, "Home at last, thy labour done" is by Mr. Sankey, and not one is by Mr. Moody. Mr. Sankey supplied several of the melodies. The English edition of the Sacred Songs & Solos has had an enormous sale; and the work as a whole is very popular for Home Mission services. During the past fifteen years Mr. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos have had a very large sale, which has justified him in increasing the number of songs and hymns, including " New Hymns and Solos," to 1200. In 1906 he published My Life and Sacred Songs (London : Morgan & Scott). In addition to the "Story of his Own Life," the work contains an account of the most popular of his solos, with interesting reminiscences of the spiritual awakening of many who were influenced through his singing of them in public. In this respect it corresponds in some measure with G. J. Stevenson's Methodist Hymn Book, &c, 1883 (p. 1094, i.). It is an addition to the Sacred Songs and Solos, which will be held in esteem by many. In addition to his hymn, noted on p. 994, ii., Mr. Sankey gives details of the following:— 1. Out of the shadow-land into the sunshine. [Heaven Anticipated.] Mr. Sankey's account of this hymn is:— "I wrote this hymn specially for the memorial service held for Mr. Moody in Carnegie Hall, where 1 also sang it as a solo. It is the last sacred song of which I wrote both the words and music. The idea was suggested by Mr. Moody's last words, 'Earth recedes; heaven opens before me . . . God is calling me, and I must go.' On account of its peculiar association with my fellow-labourer in the Gospel for so many years, the words are here given in full." The hymn follows on p. 185, in 3 stanzas of 4 lines and a chorus. 2. Rejoice! Rejoice! our King is coming, [Advent.] Mr. Sankey writes concerning this hymn:— "During one of my trips to Great Britain on the SS. City of Rome a storm raged on the sea. The wind was howling through the rigging, and waves like mountains of foam were breaking over the bow of the vessel. A great fear had fallen upon the passengers. When the storm was at its worst, we all thought we might soon go to the bottom of the sea. The conviction came to me that the Lord would be with us iu the trying hour, and sitting down in the reading room, I composed this hymn. Before reaching England the tune had formed itself in my mind, and on arriving in London I wrote it out, and had it published in Sacred Songs and Solos, where it is No. 524 in the edition. of 1888. From Mr. Sankey's autobiographical sketch we gather that he was born at Edinburgh, in Western Pennsylvania, Aug. 28, 1840, joined Mr. Moody in 1871, and visited England for the first time in 1873. The original of the Sacred Songs, &c, of 23 pieces only, was offered as a gift to the London publishers of P. Phillips's Hallowed Song, and declined by them. It was subsequently accepted by Mr. K. O. Morgan, of Morgan & Scott, and is now a volume of 1200 hymns. From a return kindly sent us by Messrs. Morgan & Scott, we find that the various issues of the Sacred Songs and Solos were:— In 1873, 24 pp.; 1874, 72 pp. ; 1876, 153 hymns; 1877, 271 hymns; 1881, 441 hymns; 1888, 750 hymns; 1903, 1200 hymns. In addition, The Christian Choir, which is generally associated with the Sacred Songs and Solos, was issued in 1884 with 75 hymns, and in 1896 with 281.
