Come Down, O Love Divine

Author: Bianco da Siena (d. 1434); Richard Frederick Littledale (1833-1890) Meter: 6.6.11 D Appears in 109 hymnals Topics: Our Response to Christ In Penitence; The Holy Spirit The Coming of the Spirit; Holy Spirit as Comforter; Humility; Longing; Purity Of Heart Lyrics: 1 Come down, O Love Divine, seek out this soul of mine, and visit it with your own ardour glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, your holy flame bestowing. 2 O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes, in its heat consuming; and let your glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. 3 Let holy charity my outward vesture be, and lowliness becomes my inner clothing; true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o'er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. 4 And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; we cannot guess its grace, till he become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:9-12 Used With Tune: DOWN AMPNEY

The King of Love my Shepherd Is (El Rey de amor es mi pastor)

Author: Henry W. Baker, 1821-1877; Frieda M. Hoh, 1896-1962 Meter: 8.7.8.7 Appears in 677 hymnals Topics: Jesus Christ Second Coming of Lyrics: 1 The King of love my Shepherd is, Whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am his And he is mine forever. 2 Where streams of living water flow My ransomed soul he leadeth, And where the verdant pastures grow, With food celestial feedeth. 3 Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, But yet in love he sought me, And on his shoulder gently laid, And home, rejoicing, brought me. 4 In death's dark vale I fear no ill With thee, dear Lord, beside me; Thy rod and staff my comfort still, Thy cross before to guide me. 5 Thou spread a table in my sight; Thy unction grace bestoweth; And, oh, transport of delight From thy pure chalice floweth! 6 And so through all the length of days Thy goodness faileth never; Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise Within thy house forever. *Perversa y necia Scripture: Psalm 23 Used With Tune: ST. It Came upon a Midnight Clear

Author: Edmund H. Sears Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 870 hymnals Topics: Jesus Christ Second Coming of Lyrics: 1 It came upon a midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: “Peace on the earth, good will to all from heaven’s gracious King.” The world in solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels sing. 2 Still through the cloven skies they come, with peaceful wings unfurled, and still their heav’nly music floats o’er all the weary world. Above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hov’ring wing, and ever o’er its Babel sounds the blessed angels sing. 3 Yet with the woes of sin and strife, the world has suffered long; beneath the heav’nly hymn have rolled two thousand years of wrong, and warring humankind hears not the tidings which they bring. O hush the noise and cease your strife and hear the angels sing. 4 And you, beneath life's crushing load, whose forms are bending low, who toil along the climbing way with painful steps and slow: Look now! for glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing. O rest beside the weary road, and hear the angels sing. 5 For lo, the days are hast’ning on, by prophet bards foretold, when with the ever-circling years comes round the age of gold, when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling, and all the world sends back the song which now the angels sing. Scripture: Luke 2:8-20 Used With Tune: CAROL Text Sources: Christian Register, 1849, alt.

O loving voice of Jesus Which comes to cheer the night! Our hearts were filled with sadness, And we had lost our way; But morning brings us gladness, And songs the break of day. 3 "Come unto me, ye fainting, And I will give you life." O peaceful voice of Jesus Which comes to end our strife! The foe is stern and eager, The fight is fierce and long; But thou hast made us mighty, And stronger than the strong. 4 "And whosoever cometh I will not cast him out." O patient love of Jesus Which drives away our doubt; Which calls us, very sinners, Unworthy though we be Of love so free and boundless, To come, dear Lord, to thee! Amen. Psalm 12

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 50 hymnals Topics: Christ his coming, the signs of it; Signs of Christ's coming First Line: Help, Lord, for men of virtue fail Lyrics: Help, Lord, for men of virtue fail, Religion loses ground, The sons of violence prevail, And treacheries abound. Their oaths and promises they break, Yet act the flatterer's part; With fair, deceitful lips they speak, And with a double heart. If we reprove some hateful lie, How is their fury stirred "Are not our lips our own?" they cry; "And who shall be our Lord?" Scoffers appear on every side, Where a vile race of men Is raised to seats of power and pride, And bears the sword in vain. Lord, when iniquities abound, And blasphemy grows bold; When faith is hardly to be found, And love is waxing cold; Is not thy chariot hast'ning on? Hast thou not giv'n this sign? May we not trust and live upon A promise so divine? "Yes," saith the Lord, "now will I rise, And make oppressors flee; I shall appear to their surprise, And set my servants free." Thy word, like silver sev'n times tried, Through ages shall endure; The men that in thy truth confide Shall find the promise sure. Scripture: Psalm 12

Thou dost reign on high

Author: Emily E. S. Elliott Meter: Irregular Appears in 417 hymnals Topics: Christ Second Coming and Judgment of Lyrics: 1 Thou didst reign on high With a kingly crown, Yet thou camest to earth for me, And in Bethlehem's home Was there found no room For thy holy nativity: O come to my heart, Lord Jesus, There is room in my heart for thee. 2 Heaven's arches rang When the angels sang, Proclaiming thy royal degree; But of lowly birth Didst thou come to earth, And in great humility: O come to my heart, Lord Jesus, There is room in my heart for thee. 3 The foxes found rest, And the birds their nest, In the shade of the forest tree; But Thy couch was the sod, O thou Son of God, In the deserts of Galilee: O come to my heart, Lord Jesus, There is room in my heart for thee. 4 Thou camest, O Lord, With the living word That should set thy people free; But with mocking scorn, And with crown of thorn, They bore Thee to Calvary: O come to my heart, Lord Jesus, There is room in my heart for thee. 5 When heav'n's arches shall ring, And her choirs shall sing, At thy coming to victory, Let thy voice call me home, Saying "Yet there is room, There is room at My side for thee." And my heart shall rejoice, Lord Jesus, When thou comest and callest for me. Amen. Scripture: Matthew 8:20 Used With Tune: MARGARET
