Maud M. Cuninggim

1874 - 1965 Person Name: Maud M. Cuninggim, 1874- Scripture: Haggai 2:7-9 Author of "O living Christ, chief cornerstone" in The Hymnal Cuninggim, Maud Merrimon (Raleigh, North Carolina, March 7, 1874--May 2, 1965, Knoxville, Tennessee). Mrs. Jesse L. Cuninggim, whose husband was for many years President of Scarritt Bible and Training School, Nashville, Tennessee, was born at Raleigh, North Carolina. The daughter of Augusts Merrimon, United State Senator from North Carolina, 1893-1899, and later Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of his state until his death, she began writing verse while ministering to her father's needs during his last illness. She developed an unusual facility in writing occasional poems, many of which appeared in various religious journals. V. de Rodríguez, s. 20 Scripture: Haggai 2:6-9 Author of "Este templo dedicamos" in Celebremos Su Gloria Isabel González Vásquez de Rodríguez, 1894-1975, worked along side her husband, who was a pastor in Uruguay and Argentina. She was an educator and speaker, helped establish women's societies in the churches they served, advocated for homeschooling, and fought against alcoholism and other vices. John R. Sweney

1837 - 1899 Scripture: Haggai 2:6-9 Composer of "GIVE ME JESUS" in Celebremos Su Gloria John R. Sweney (1837-1899) was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and exhibited musical abilities at an early age. At nineteen he was studying with a German music teacher, leading a choir and glee club, and performing at children’s entertainments. By twenty-two he was teaching at a school in Dover, Delaware. Soon thereafter, he was put in charge of the band of the Third Delaware Regiment of the Union Army for the duration of the Civil War. After the war, he became Professor of Music at the Pennsylvania Military Academy, and director of Sweney’s Cornet Band. He eventually earned Bachelor and Doctor of Music degrees at the Academy. Sweney began composing church music in 1871 and became well-known as a leader of large congregations. His appreciators stated “Sweney knows how to make a congregation sing” and “He had great power in arousing multitudes.” He also became director of music for a large Sunday school at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia of which John Wanamaker was superintendent (Wanamaker was the founder of the first major department store in Philadelphia). In addition to his prolific output of hymn melodies and other compositions, Sweney edited or co-edited about sixty song collections, many in collaboration with William J. Kirkpatrick. b. 1948 Scripture: Haggai 1, 2 Author of "Song of the Prophets" in Lift Up Your Hearts Michael Morgan (b. 1948) is a church musician, Psalm scholar, and collector of English Bibles and Psalters from Atlanta, Georgia. After almost 40 years, he now serves as Organist Emeritus for Atlanta’s historic Central Presbyterian Church, and as Seminary Musician at Columbia Theological Seminary. He holds degrees from Florida State University and Atlanta University, and did post-graduate study with composer Richard Purvis in San Francisco. He has played recitals, worship services, and master classes across the U. S., and in England, France, Spain, Switzerland, and Germany. He is author of the Psalter for Christian Worship (1999; rev. 2010), and a regular contributor in the field of psalmody (most recently to the Reformed collections Psalms for All Seasons and Lift Up Your Hearts, and the new Presbyterian hymnal, Glory to God).
