1843 - 1925 Meter: 6.5.6.5 Author of "Father, Who Hast Gathered" in The Cyber Hymnal Dugmore, Ernest Edward, M.A., son of William Dugmore, Q.C, was b. at Bayswater, 1843, and educated at Bruce Castle School and by private tutors, and Wadh. Coll., Oxford; B.A. 1867; M.A. 1869. Ordained in 1867, he held the curacy of St. Peter's, Vauxhall, 1867-72, when he became Vicar of Parkstone 1872, and Canon of Sarum and Preb. of Gillingham Major 1900. He published in 1884 Gospel Idylls and Other Sacred Verses; and in 1900 Hymns of Adoration for Church Use. Of his hymns the following were included in the 1904 edition of Hymns Ancient & Modern:-- 1. Almighty Father of all things that he. No. 29 of Hymns of Adoration, 1900, as "For the Opening of an Exhibition." Abbreviated and slightly altered in Hymns Ancient & Modern to adapt it as a "General" hymn. It was originally composed for and used at a small industrial Exhibition held in his Parish. 2. Father Unoriginate. "To the Eternal Father," No. 20 in Hymns of Adoration, &c, in 7 stanzas of 6 lines. Abbreviated and partly re-written in Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1904. 3. Christians, sing the Incarnation. No. 23 in Hymns of Adoration, &c., as a " Processional before the Eucharist," in 7 stanzas of 12 lines, and repeated in full, with slight alterations in Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1904. Originally published with music, separately, at Vauxhall, 1870 or thereabouts. 4. Father, Who hast gathered This dear child to rest. Given in Hymns of Adoration, &c, No. 26, in 11 stanzas of 4 lines, as "For a Child's Funeral," the first line being "Jesu, Who hath gathered," Abbreviated and slightly altered in Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1904. These excerpts from Canon Dugmore's work are by no means the best in the book. Com¬pilers of sacred song should give heed to this fact. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, New Supplement (1907)

J. A. P. Schulz

1747 - 1800 Person Name: Johann Abraham Peter Schulz, 1847-1800 Meter: 6.5.6.5 Composer of "SWAHILI" in Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New Johann Abraham Peter Schulz Germany 1747-1800. Born at Luneburg, Germany, son of a baker, he attended St Michaelis school in Luneburg and studied organ, then the Johanneum from 1759-1764. In 1765 he was a student of composer, Johann Kimberger, and then taught in Berlin himself. In 1768 Kimberger recommended Schulz for the position of music teacher and accompanist to the Polish Princess Sapieha Woiwodin von Smolensk. Schulz moved to Berlin and traveled with her for three years performing throughout Europe, where he came in contact with many new musical ideas. He married Catharina Maria Gercken, and they had a daughter, Celle. He served as the conductor of the French Theatre in Berlin from 1776-1780. From 1786-1787 he was the Kapellmeister of Prince Henry in Rheinsberg. He began writing operas in 1785 and became musical director of the Berlin French theatre. Schulz went on to serve as Court Kapellmeister in Copenhagen from 1787-1795 before returning to Berlin. In Copenhagen the music library burned down, and he had a breakdown in health from trying to save it. His health suffered further from the effects of a shipwreck he experienced in 1796. Schulz wrote seven operas, stage music, oratorios, and cantatas, as well as piano pieces, folk songs, and church music. He also wrote articles on music theory for Johann Georg Sulzer’s ‘Allgemeine Theorie der schonen Kunste’ in four volumes. He died at Schwedt an der Oder, Germany. John Perry

David Evans

1874 - 1948 Person Name: David Evans, 1874-1948 Meter: 6.5.6.5 Harmonizer of "ERNSTEIN" in The Irish Presbyterian Hymnbook David Evans (b. Resolven, Glamorganshire, Wales, 1874; d. Rosllannerchrugog, Denbighshire, Wales, 1948) was an important leader in Welsh church music. Educated at Arnold College, Swansea, and at University College, Cardiff, he received a doctorate in music from Oxford University. His longest professional post was as professor of music at University College in Cardiff (1903-1939), where he organized a large music department. He was also a well-known and respected judge at Welsh hymn-singing festivals and a composer of many orchestral and choral works, anthems, service music, and hymn tunes. Bert Polman

Stanley L. Osborne

1907 - 2000 Person Name: Stanley L Osborne, 1907- Meter: 6.5.6.5 Composer of "PRESENCE" in The Hymn Book of the Anglican Church of Canada and the United Church of Canada Stanley Llewellen Osborne, studied music at the University Toronto, and later, theology at Emmanuel College, and was ordained a United Church Minister in 1932. Dr. Osborne was co-editor of the United Church's Canadian Youth Hymnal (1939), and full-time secretary to the joint committee of the United Church and the Anglican Church of Canada for The Hymn Book, which they published together in 1971.
