James G. Gilkey

1889 - 1964 Hymnal Number: 4977 Author of "Outside the Holy City" in The Cyber Hymnal Born: September 28, 1889, Watertown, Massachusetts. Died: July 1964, Weekapaug, Rhode Island. Buried: Springfield Cemetery, Springfield, Massachusetts. Gilkey graduated from Harvard College (1912) and Union Theological Seminary. He was a teacher and chaplain at Amherst College, then, starting in 1917, pastored at the South Congregational Church, Springfield, Massachusetts, until retiring in 1954. In 1926, he was the commencement speaker at the University of Connecticut. J. S. Howson

1816 - 1885 Person Name: Johann S. Howson Hymnal Number: 2 Author of "At All Times Praise the Lord" in The Cyber Hymnal Howson, John Saul, D.D., was b. in 1816, and educated at Trinity Coll., Camb., B.A. (1st class Cl.) 1837. From 1849 to 1865 Principal of Liverpool College, and Dean of Chester 1867. His theological works are well known. His contributions to hymnology are few. The hymn, "At all times praise the Lord" (In Affliction), was "written during a time of deep depression in a nervous breakdown which he had about the year 1880" (Family note in MS.). It is found in Dr. Hunter's Hymns of Faith and Life, 1889; The Pilgrim Hymnal, 1904, and others. Dean Howson died Dec. 15, 1885. . --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, New Supplement (1907)

Hannah F. Gould

1789 - 1865 Hymnal Number: 1223 Author of "Day of God, Thou Blessèd Day" in The Cyber Hymnal Gould, Hannah Flagg, was born at Lancaster, Vermont, in 1789. In her youth her father removed to Newbury-port, Massachusetts. She died in 1865. Her Poems were published in 1832, 1835, and 1841. From these Poems the following pieces are taken:— 1. Alone I walked the ocean strand. 2. Day of God, thou blessed day. (1841.) Sunday. 3. O Thou Who hast spread out the skies. (1832.) For Use at Sea. 4. O Father, to the fields that are ripe. S. F. Ackley

1852 - 1924 Person Name: Stanley Frank Ackley Hymnal Number: 16044 Author of "Will You Be Found Up There?" in The Cyber Hymnal Stanley Frank Ackley was born April 1, 1852 in Spring Hill, PA. His father was a farmer. He married Ophelia A. Cogswell, November 1, 1871. She lived in the same county. For a time, he was a vocal music teacher and he had a band that he traveled with. In 1898, he became a minister in the Methodist Protestant Church. He served churches in Berwick, PA, Inwood, NY, Daleville, PA, White Plains, NY, Tarrytown, NY and Paterson NJ. He died June 3, 1924 in Elmhurst, PA. He was the father of B. D. Ackley (hymn writer), George Kilmer Ackley (minister) and A. H. Ackley (hymn writer).
