Andraé Crouch

1942 - 2015 Topics: Apertura del Culto Author of "A Dios sea la gloria" in Celebremos Su Gloria Born in San Francisco on July 1, 1942, and raised in Los Angeles, Andraé Edward Crouch was the son of bivocational-pastor parents Benjamin and Catherine Crouch. He has recounted that he received the gift of music as a child, when his father was called as a guest preacher and pastoral candidate to a small rural church that had no musicians. He began playing for them at the age of 11. He wrote his first gospel song at 14, and formed his first band, the COGICS, in 1960. In 1965 he formed The Disciples, which lasted until 1979, and as a protegé of Audrey Mieir, Ralph Carmichael, and other leading Contemporary Christian Music artists of the time, went on to win a total of nine Grammies, and numerous other awards. He wrote his first well-known song, "The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power", at the age of 15, but most of his songs that have gained congregational currency flowed from the years when he was active with The Disciples. After The Disciples were disbanded, Crouch continued his recording and performing career, and also became more active in church ministries. After his parents died (1993-94), with his twin sister Sandra he took over the pastorate at the church his parents had led, New Christ Memorial Church of God in Christ in Pacoima, California. In December, 2014, Crouch was hospitalized for treatment of pneumonia and congestive heart failure, and on January 3, 2015, he was readmitted to the hospital following a heart attack. He died there five days later, at the age of 72. His twin sister and co-pastor Sandra Crouch issued the following statement: "Today my twin brother, womb-mate and best friend went home to be with the Lord. Please keep me, my family and our church family in your prayers. I tried to keep him here but God loved him best."

Mary A. Lathbury

1841 - 1913 Topics: Apertura del Culto Author of "Loor a ti" in Celebremos Su Gloria Lathbury, Mary Ann, was born in Manchester, Ontario County, New York, Aug. 10, 1841. Miss Lathbury writes somewhat extensively for the American religious periodical press, and is well and favourably known (see the Century Magazine, Jan., 1885, p. 342). Of her hymns which have come into common use we have:— 1. Break Thou the bread of life. Communion with God. A "Study Song" for the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle, written in the summer of 1880. It is in Horder's (Eng.) Congregational Hymns, 1884. 2. Day is dying in the west. Evening. "Written at the request of the Rev. John H. Vincent, D.D., in the summer of 1880. It was a "Vesper Song," and has been frequently used in the responsive services of the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle." It is in the Laudes Domini, N. Y., 1884. James John Cummins

1795 - 1867 Person Name: James J. Cummings Topics: Apertura del Culto Author of "Con cánticos, Señor" in Celebremos Su Gloria Cummins, James John, son of a merchant in Cork, Ireland, was born in Cork, May 5, 1795. In 1834 he removed to London, and was for many years a Director of the Union Bank of Australia. He died at Wildecroft, Buckland, Surrey, Nov. 23, 1867. He devoted much time to the study of Hebrew and Theology. He prepared for the use of his children in their preparation for Confirmation, Seals of the Covenant Opened in the Sacraments. This work, including several hymns and poems, was published in 1839. The hymns and other poetical pieces were also published in 1839 as Poetical Meditations and Hymns by the Author of The Seals of the Covenant Opened. In 1849 this work was republished with additions as Hymns, Meditations, and other Poems. The title on the cover of this work is Lyra Evangelica, and by this title it is usually known. Audrey Mieir

1916 - 1996 Topics: Apertura del Culto Author of "Maravilloso Es" in Celebremos Su Gloria Audrey Mieir's musical gift showed itself an early age, when she began singing and leading choral performances. In the 1950’s she established the Harmony Chorus, and worked with musician-evangelist Phil Kerr. These efforts were followed by concerts throughout America in the 1960’s. Alfredo Colom

1904 - 1971 Person Name: Alfredo Colom M. Topics: Apertura del Culto Author of "Jesús es la Roca" in Celebremos Su Gloria Alfredo Colom was a prolific songwriter from Guatemala. He held public office, but ruined his life with alcohol and was considering suicide when an indigenous Guatemalan Christian gave him a New Testament. Eventually he surrendered his life to Christ serving in music and evangelism on the radio and in travels throughout Central and South America. Footnote from Singing the New Testament, hymn #36

1778 - 1813 Person Name: Frederick F. Flemming Topics: Apertura del Culto Composer of "FLEMMING" in Celebremos Su Gloria Friedrich Ferdinand Flemming Germany 1778-1813. Born in Neuhausen, Erzgebirge, Germany, he studied medicine at Wittenberg, 1796-1800, Jena, Vienna, and Trieste. He practiced as a physician in Berlin until his death, but, musically, is remembered for his setting of Horace's ode beginning “Integer Vitae”, from which the tune “Flemming” is adapted. He was active in musical circles and composed many songs for a male vocal ensemble, “Liedertafel”. He died in Berlin. John Perry

George William Warren

1828 - 1902 Person Name: George W. Warren Topics: Apertura del Culto Composer of "NATIONAL HYMN" in Celebremos Su Gloria George W. Warren (b. Albany, NY, 1828; d. New York, 1902) received his general education at Racine College in Wisconsin, but as a musician he was largely self-trained. An organist in a number of Episcopal churches, he played the organ for thirty years (1870-1900) at St. Thomas Church in New York City. Warren composed anthems and liturgical service music; his hymn tunes were collected in Warren's Hymns and Tunes as Sung in St. Thomas Church (1888). Bert Polman

Greg Nelson

Overview and early career Nelson was born in Bismarck, North Dakota. He has produced recordings for Christian and theatrical artists including Sandi Patty, Steve Green, Larnelle Harris, Twila Paris, Michael Crawford and Richard Smallwood as well as multiple artist recordings with Amy Grant, Steven Curtis Chapman, Michael W. Smith, CeCe Winans, Graham Kendrick, Jennifer Holliday, Wintley Phipps, Máire Brennan, Kathie Lee Gifford and the American Boychoir. Nelson headed Spirit Records, a division of Sparrow Records, with artists Benny Hester and Albrecht, Roley and Moore. He went on to co-found Refuge Records in 1980 with Jack Hafer, another Sparrow employee. In addition, he served as the first publishing director for Billy Ray Hearn at Sparrow. As an arranger/orchestrator Nelson composed the "Prelude" to John Michael Talbot's “Last Supper” and later created string arrangements for various gospel and contemporary Christian artists. Production Nelson has produced 13 gold records and 3 platinum records. He has received 20 Dove Awards as well as over 30 nominations. In addition his productions have garnered 7 Grammy Awards and 13 Grammy nominations for Sandi Patty and Larnelle Harris. He has received song, songwriter and publisher awards from Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI), the Nashville Songwriters Association and the Gospel Music Association. He received a BMI "Special Contribution Award" in appreciation of his many outstanding contributions to the world of Christian music. He was the third recipient of the Gospel Music Association “Impact Award” for his outstanding work and influence in the contemporary Christian music industry. His productions of The New Young Messiah and Emmanuel have been successful Christmas tours featuring many high-profile Christian artists.
