John Needham

? - 1786 Person Name: Needham Scripture: Haggai 2:9 Author of "Messiah" in A Selection of Hymns Needham, John, was the son of John Needham, Baptist Minister, of Hitchin, Herts, but the date of his birth is unknown. He would doubtless be educated by his father, who was a tutor and in repute as a learned man. In 1750 Needham became co-pastor with John Beddome at the Baptist meetinghouse in the Pithay, Bristol; but, two years later, Beddome having retired through age, a violent controversy arose in the Church with regard to a continuance of the plan of co-pastorship. As the result, Needham and a number of his friends removed to a Baptist meetinghouse in Callowhill Street, where a Mr. Foot was pastor. For a time the two societies used the same builing at different hours, but in 1755 they were united, with Mr. Needham and Mr. Foot as co-pastors. It is known that up to 1774 this arrangement continued, and it is also known that in 1787, both Mr. Needham and Mr. Foot having died, the Callowhill Street Church became extinct, but which of the two pastors was the survivor is not known. The date of Needham's death is unknown. It was probably circa 1786. In 1768 he published Hymns Devotional and Moral on various Subjects, collected chiefly from the Holy Scriptures, &c, Bristol, S. Farley, 1768. These hymns are 263 in all, and whilst none of them possess great excellence, yet several are of a pleasing and useful character. During the past 120 years several have appeared in Nonconformist hymnbooks, and specially in those of the Baptists. Of these the following are still in common use:— 1. Ashamed of Christ! my soul disdains. Not ashamed of Christ. 2. Awake, my tongue, thy tribute bring. The Divine Perfections. 3. Glory to God, Who reigns above. Jesus, the Messiah. 4. Thou art, O God, a Spirit pure. God a Spirit. 13. To praise the ever bounteous Lord. Harvest. 14. When some kind shepherd from his fold. The Lost Sheep. Marty Nystrom

Person Name: Martin Nystrom, 1956- Scripture: Haggai 2:7 Author of "As the Deer" in Worship and Rejoice Martin J. Nystrom, a songwriter, was born in 1956 in Seattle, Washington, to a mother who grew up in the Christian Reformed Church; his father was brought up in the Evangelical Covenant Church. After graduating from Oral Roberts University with a degree in music education, Nystrom worked as a music director for the New York branch of Christ for the Nations. More recently he has served as a song development manager for Integrity Music, for whom he has written more than seventy songs. Nystrom is featured as worship leader on five Integrity "Hosanna" tapes. He also gives presentations at numerous conferences throughout the world. --www.reformedworship.org

Thomas M. Westrup

1837 - 1909 Person Name: Tomás M. Westrup (1837-1909) Scripture: Haggai 2:4 Vers. esp. of "¡Trabajad! ¡Trabajad!" in Himnario Adventista del Séptimo Día Thomas Martin Westrup moved with his family from London to Mexico when he was fifteen years old. He translated hundreds of hymns and, along with his son, Enrique, published a three-volume hymnal Incienso Christiano. Don Cason

b. 1954 Scripture: Haggai 2:7 Composer of "WAITING (Cason)" in Glory to God Don Cason is the former President of Word Music, noted Christian Music publisher. In his most recent role at the company, Cason oversaw all print music publishing operations for Word Music, including song and songwriter development for Word’s print music division. In his twenty-eight year career at the company he has been directly involved in the songwriting careers of Michael W. Smith, Nicole C. Mullen, Wayne Watson, Dennis Jernigan, and David Meece. Among his arranging and production credits, Cason’s youth choir musicals SURRENDER, DECK THE MALL, and ROOM 77 have been nominated for Dove Awards. He has written songs that have been recorded by Christian artists Bryan Duncan, Joni Eareckson-Tada, and Teri DeSario. Cason has authored curriculum for the Academy of Gospel Music Arts dealing with the songwriter / publisher relationship, and has led numerous seminars for aspiring songwriters and publishers. Cason is the Editor for Keyboard Worship and Praise, a magazine produced by Lorenz containing the best of Christian music for today's church. Cason earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Baylor University in 1976 and completed studies toward a Master’s Degree in Music History and Literature at the same university. Carl P. Daw Jr.

b. 1944 Person Name: Carl P. Daw, Jr. (1944-) Scripture: Haggai 1:15, 2:1-9 Author of "Restore in Us, O God" in Common Praise (1998) Carl P. Daw, Jr. (b. Louisville, KY, 1944) is the son of a Baptist minister. He holds a PhD degree in English (University of Virginia) and taught English from 1970-1979 at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia. As an Episcopal priest (MDiv, 1981, University of the South, Sewanee, Tennesee) he served several congregations in Virginia, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. From 1996-2009 he served as the Executive Director of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. Carl Daw began to write hymns as a consultant member of the Text committee for The Hymnal 1982, and his many texts often appeared first in several small collections, including A Year of Grace: Hymns for the Church Year (1990); To Sing God’s Praise (1992), New Psalms and Hymns and Spiritual Songs (1996), Gathered for Worship (2006). Other publications include A Hymntune Psalter (2 volumes, 1988-1989) and Breaking the Word: Essays on the Liturgical Dimensions of Preaching (1994, for which he served as editor and contributed two essays. In 2002 a collection of 25 of his hymns in Japanese was published by the United Church of Christ in Japan.
