Walter Ehret

1918 - 2009 Hymnal Number: 89 Arranger of "ISLA DEL ENCANTO" in Voices United EHRET--Walter, passed away on November 16th, 2009 at the age of 91, after a long, happy, and productive life. He left a great legacy as a teacher who touched many students' lives. He was the beloved husband and best friend of Beverly, his wife of 62 years, adored father of David Ehret and Christine Marver, and daughter-in-law Pamela Ehret, and the proud grandfather of Jeffrey, Julia, and Sarah Marver. Mr. Ehret was born in New York City in 1918 to Adele Tonies and her husband who tragically died in the flu epidemic of that year. He was later adopted by a kind stepfather, Charles Ehret. Walter Ehret was a graduate of the Julliard School of Music and Teachers College, Columbia University. He has served as an adjunct faculty member of Hofstra University, Manhattanville College, and Teachers College, Columbia University. In addition, he taught instrumental and choral music in several New Jersey and New York school systems for over 40 years. In 1984 he retired as District Coordinator of Music for the Scarsdale, NY Public Schools. Choral groups under his direction have performed with distinction at contests and at other award-winning occasions. They have performed in Carnegie Hall and Madison Square Garden, as well as on radio and television. His organizations have been invited to sing at New Jersey and New York State School Music Association conventions, divisional meetings of the Music Educators National Conference, and the first American Choral Directors Association National Conference. He was a past president of the Music Educators Associations for Bergen, Nassau, and Westchester Counties. He was a former Vice President of Choirs for the New York State School Music Association, a former State Chairman of Junior High School Music of the New York State School Music Association, and a past member of several MENC committees. He was a founding member and first New York State president of the American Choral Directors Association. He is well known as a clinician, conductor, and choral literature specialist, and has functioned in these various capacities at over 300 workshops in some 30 states. He is one of the nation's most prolific and respected choral editors and arrangers, and has over 2000 publications in print. In addition, he is co-author of Growing with Music, a basic music series for grades K-8, co-author of Functional Lessons in Singing, a class voice textbook, author of The Choral Conductor's Handbook, and co-author of The International Book of Christmas Carols. --www.legacy.com/obituaries/nytimes/

Amzi Chapin

1768 - 1835 Hymnal Number: 666 Composer of "GOLDEN HILL" in Voices United Amzi Chapin USA 1768-1835. Born in Springfield. MA, into a family of cabinetmakers, jewelers, and watchmakers, he followed in the same trade in Hartford, CT. for several years, then moved to New Haven, CT. He embarked on a career as an itinerant singing teacher, composer, and cabinetmaker in the South and Midwest. He married Hannah Power and they had eight children. They lived in Mount Pleasant, PA, where he taught singing and farmed for the next 30 years. He also founded a mill. He co-founded the Presbyterian congregation in Northfield Township. Chapin taught singing schools in VA, NC, KY, and PA. In 1831, he and his family moved to Northfield, OH. His older brother, Lucius, was also a singing teacher, and they were among the first to teach sacred music west of the Allegheny Mountains. John Perry

James Frederick Swift

See also Marks, Godfrey (Musician) ================ Swift, James Frederick, son of Joseph Swift, was born at Manchester, Dec. 28, 1847. In 1851 he removed with his parents to Liverpool, where he was educated at the Commercial School of Liverpool College. At an early age he displayed a talent for music, and performed in public as a pianist as early as 1859. In 1863 he was appointed organist at the Cranmer Wesleyan Chapel. Subsequently he was organist at St. Andrew's Church, Liver¬pool, for 10 years, and then, from 1886 to the present, at St. Bride's, in the same city. He has composed a large number of songs and instrumental pieces under the nom-de-plume of "Godfrey Marks." He has also written a number of hymns and sacred odes, for which he has composed music. From these eight were published with the music, in 1875, as Hymns for Home and Sacred Festivals (London, Novello). From this small collection the following hymns have come into common use:— 1. When evening shadows gather. Evening. Written in 1873, and first sung in public at the Wesleyan Choral. Festival in St. George's Hall, Liverpool, in 1874. It was included in his Hymns for Home, &c, No. 8, in 5 stanzas of 8 lines. It then passed into Thring's Collection, 1882, the Prim. Methodist Hymnal, 1887, and others. It is a very beautiful Evening Hymn. 2. Have you heard the sweet, sweet story? Life of Jesus. Written in 1874, and published in his Hymns for Home, &c, 1875, No. 4, in 5 stanzas of 8 lines, with a chorus of 4 lines. 3. When life is gay with sunshine. Refuge in Trouble. Written in 1874, and published in his Hymns for Home, &c, 1875, No. 7, in 3 st. of 8 1. Stanley M. Wiersma

Orange City, IA, 1930; d. Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 1986) was a poet and professor of English at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, from 1959 until his sudden death in 1986. He attended Calvin as an undergraduate and received a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1959. His love for the Genevan psalms is reflected in the two books of poetry for which he is most widely known: Purpaleanie and Other Permutations (1978) and Style and Class (1982), both written under the pseudonym Sietze Buning. He also wrote More Than the Ear Discovers: God in the Plays of Christopher Fry and translated many Dutch poems and hymn texts into English, including the children's hymns published in All Will Be New (1982).
