E. E. Hewitt

1851 - 1920 Hymnal Number: 27 Author of "Beautiful Words of Jesus" in Favorites Number 5 Pseudonym: Lidie H. Edmunds. Eliza Edmunds Hewitt was born in Philadelphia 28 June 1851. She was educated in the public schools and after graduation from high school became a teacher. However, she developed a spinal malady which cut short her career and made her a shut-in for many years. During her convalescence, she studied English literature. She felt a need to be useful to her church and began writing poems for the primary department. she went on to teach Sunday school, take an active part in the Philadelphia Elementary Union and become Superintendent of the primary department of Calvin Presbyterian Church. Alfred B. Smith

1916 - 2001 Hymnal Number: 38 Author of "Surely Goodness and Mercy" in Favorites Number 5 Used pseudonym B. C. Laurelton ---------- In 1930, he began playing on radio broadcasts in Jersey City, New Jersey, on "The Old Fashioned Gospel Hour." After meeting Wendell P. Loveless, Alfred enrolled at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and became a member of the WMBI staff. During service as Minister of Music at The Church of the Open Door in Philadelphia, he taught at The Philadelphia School of the Bible in the fall of 1938. During that year, he wrote "For God So Loved the World" after visiting the ninety-four year-old hymn writer George C. Stebbins. Smith met Billy Graham when they were both students at Wheaton College. During their long collaboration, they founded Singspiration in 1941. After graduating from Wheaton, Smith, Graham, and George Beverly Shea started "Youth for Christ" in Chicago. --Daniel Mahraun (from livinghymns.org)

Carlton C. Buck

1907 - 1999 Hymnal Number: 6 Author of "I Believe in Miracles" in Favorites Number 5 Carlton C. Buck served as the Pastor of the First Christian Church of Eugene, Oregon until 1960. Prior to this he held various pastorates in Christian Churches in Southern California, including a fourteen year pastorate in Fullerton from which he came to Eugene. A native of Salina, Kansas, he lived most of his adult life on the west coast. He received a Bachelor of Sacred Music Degree from the Los Angeles Bible Seminary, a Master of Arts and an honorary D.D. from San Gabriel College. He also worked at Whittier College and Chapman College. He is the author of three books, and of numerous sacred songs; and was a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. He is the author of the Hymn Society's "O Master Teacher, Teach us Now" in Fifteen New Christian Education Hymns, and "Bless Thou Our Christian Homes, O Lord" in Marriage and Family Life Hymns. --From, Ten New Hymns on the Ministry, 1966.
