The Church’s One Foundation

Author: Samuel J. Stone Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 856 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 126 Lyrics: 1 The church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ, our Lord; we are a new creation by water and the Word. From heav’n he came and taught us what perfect love can be; through life and death he sought us, and rose to set us free. 2 The church in ev’ry nation is one through all the earth; our charter of salvation, one God, one faith, one birth; one name together blessing, one holy food we share, to one hope ever pressing, at one in work and prayer. 3 Still, schisms, tribulation, and hatred fuel our war; we wait the consummation of peace forevermore. The saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up, “How long?” And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song. 4 Yet we on earth have union with God, the Three in One, and mystic, sweet communion with those whose rest is won. Oh, happy ones and holy! God, give us grace that we, like them, the meek and lowly, may live eternally. Come Away to the Skies

Meter: 6.6.9 D Appears in 173 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 126 Lyrics: 1 Come away to the skies, my beloved, arise and rejoice in the day thou wast born. On this festival day, come exulting away, and with singing to Zion return. 2 Now with singing and praise, let us spend all the days, by our heavenly Father bestowed, while his grace we receive from his bounty, and live to the honour and glory of God. 3 For the glory we were first created to share, both the nature and kingdom divine! Now created again that our lives may remain, throughout time and eternity thine. 4 We with thanks do approve the design of that love which hath joined us to Jesus' name; so united in heart, let us nevermore part, till we meet at the feast of the Lamb. 5 Hallelujah we sing, to the heaven's high King, and his rapturous praises repeat: to the Lamb that was slain, hallelujah again, sing, all heaven, and fall at his feet. Topics: Easter (season) Used With Tune: MIDDLEBURY Text Sources: The Southern Harmony, New Haven, 1835, alt.
