Henry Montagu Butler

1833 - 1918 Person Name: H. Montagu Butler, 1833-1918 Scripture: Matthew 4:17 Author of "'Lift up your hearts!' We lift them, Lord, to thee" in Common Praise Butler, Henry Montagu, D.D., was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and graduated B.A. as Senior Classic in 1855, and became a Fellow of his college in 1855. Taking Holy Orders in 1859, he became Head Master of Harrow School in 1859. This position he held until 1885, when he was preferred to the Deanery of Gloucester. He held the deanery for a short time only, and became Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, on the death of Dr. W. H. Thompson in 1886. Dr. Butler has also held the important appointments of Hon. Chaplain to the Queen; Examining Chaplain to Archbishops Tait and Benson; Select Preacher at Oxford, 1882; and Preb. of Holborn in St. Paul's Cathedral. Dr. Butler edited the 3rd edition of Hymns for the Chapel of Harrow School, 1865, and the 4th edition, 1881. To the Harrow Hymn Book Dr. Butler contributed:— 1. Art thou the Healer that should come. St. John Baptist. 2. Ask and ye surely shall receive. Prayer. Last St. by J. Montgomery. 3. Jesus died for us and rose again. Death and Burial. 4. Lovest thou Me ? the risen Saviour cried. St. Peter. 5. 0 merciful and holy. Founder's Day. 6. Rejoice today with one accord. Founder's Day. 7. The night of agony hath passed. Good Friday. 8. Where shall we find our mightiest saint? St. Paul. Of these Nos. 2 and 3 were given in the 3rd edition of the Harrow Hymn Book, 1865, and the rest were added in 1881. Nos. 3, 5, 6 and 8 are also in Hymns for the Use of Sherborne School, 1888, Nos. 5 and 6 being much altered. Laurence Housman

Housman, Lawrence, author and artist, was born July 18, 1867, at Bromsgrove, Worcs. His devotional poetry is principally in his Spikenard, 1898, and Bethlehem, 1902. To the English Hymnal, 1906, he contributed eight translations (142, 188, 191, 228, 229, 230, 231, 234); also three original hymns, with a fourth previously published, viz.:— 1. Died: February 20, 1959, Glastonbury, Somerset, England. Buried: St. Mary’s, Bathwick, Smallcombe, near Bath. Housman studied art at the Lambeth School of Art and the Royal College of Art. He had great success as an illustrator, but when his eyesight began to fail, he turned to writing books and plays. He wrote 80 books during his lifetime. He often seemed to fall afoul of the censors, though, for religious and political reasons. A committed socialist and pacifist, in 1907, he helped found the Men’s League for Women’s Suffrage. He was also an honorary associate of the Women Writers’ Suffrage League. Richard Proulx

1937 - 2010 Person Name: Richard Proulx, 1937-2010 Scripture: Matthew 4:21 Harmonizer of "KING OF GLORY" in Gather (3rd ed.) Richard Proulx (b. St. Paul, MN, April 3, 1937; d. Chicago, IL, February 18, 2010). A composer, conductor, and teacher, Proulx was director of music at the Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago, Illinois (1980-1997); before that he was organist and choirmaster at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in Seattle, Washington. He contributed his expertise to the Roman Catholic Worship III (1986), The Episcopal Hymnal 1982, The United Methodist Hymnal (1989), and the ecumenical A New Hymnal for Colleges and Schools (1992). He was educated at the University of Minnesota, MacPhail College of Music in Minneapolis, Minnesota, St. John's Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota, and the Royal School of Church Music in England. Sebastian Temple (1928-1997) grew up in South Africa and later moved to London, where he worked for the BBC on news broadcasts relating to South Africa. Sebastian converted to Catholicism and spent much of his time composing music for worship. Kathleen Thomerson

b. 1934 Person Name: Kathleen Armstrong Thomerson, 1934- Scripture: Matthew 4:18-22 Author of "I want to walk as a child of the light" in Together in Song Kathleen Thomerson is Organist and Music Director at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas. She was born in Tennessee and grew up in Mississippi, California, and Texas. College music study was at the Universities of Colorado and Texas, the Flemish Royal Conservatory in Antwerp, and privately in Paris. Before retirement in Austin, she lived in Collinsville, Illinois, when her husband was a biology professor at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.
