1872 - 1955 Person Name: C. A. Alington, 1872-1955 Meter: 7.7.7.5 Author of "Lord of all, to whom alone" in Common Praise Educated at Trinity College, Oxford, England, Cyril A. Alington (b. Ipswich, England, 1872; d. St. Leonards, Hertfordshire, England, 1955) was ordained a priest in the Church of England in 1901. He had a teaching career that included being headmaster at Shrewsbury School and Eton College. He was dean of Durham from 1933-1951 as well as chaplain to the king of England. His writings include literary works and Christianity in England, Good News (1945). Many of his hymns appeared in various twentieth-century editions of the famous British hymnal, Hymns Ancient and Modern. Bert Polman

H. Cooke

1788 - 1868 Person Name: Henry Cook, 1788-1868 Meter: 7.7.7.5 Author of "Jesus, Shepherd of the Sheep" in Christian Worship (1993) Cooke, Henry, D.D., LL.D., was born at Grillagh, near Maghera, County Londonderry, Ireland, May 11, 1788, and was educated at the University of Glasgow. He became pastor of Dueane Presbyterian Church in 1808. After holding other pastorates he was appointed to that of the Presbyterian congregation in May Street, Belfast. He died in Belfast, Dec. 13, 1868. His Life was published by Dr. J. L. Porter, in 1871. The hymn, "Jesus, Shepherd of the Sheep, Who Thy Father's flock," &c. (The Good Shepherd ), in the Canadian Presbyterian Hymn Book, 1880, is by him. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907)

S. F. Jones

1826 - 1895 Meter: 7.7.7.5 Composer of "ST. MARGARET (Jones)" Jones, Samuel Flood, M.A., son of William Jones, for many years the Secretary of the Religious Tract Society, was born in London in 1826, and educated at Pembroke College, Oxford (B.A. 1851). Taking Holy Orders he was Minister of St. Matthew's, Spring Gardens, London, 1854-76; Lecturer of Bow, London, 1858-76; Minor Canon, Westminster Abbey, 1859; Precentor, 1869; Vicar of St. Botolph, Aldersgate, London, 1876; and Priest in Ordinary to the Queen, 1869. In 1860 he published Hymns of Prayer and Praise, Lond., Dalton & Lucy. This book contained 100 hymns, of which the following were by Mr. Jones:— 1. Here all is strife and war. The Present and the Future. 2. Jesus, my Advocate in heaven. Jesus the Advocate. This is adapted from "Star of the Sea." 3. Lord of light, this day our Guardian be. Morning. 4. This is the day of light, When first the silv'ry dawn. Sunday. Written long before 1860. Mr. Jones's most popular hymn is:— 5. Father of Life, confessing. Holy Matrimony. This was written about 1867, at the request of the late Dean Stanley for use at Marriages in Westminster Abbey. It has passed into several hymn-books. Mr. Jones's brother, William Henry Rich-Jones, M.A., Vicar of Bradford-on-Avon, and Canon of Salisbury (b. 1817, d. 1885), contributed :— 1. Haste, my soul, thy God adore. God the Sustainer. 2. Lord, Thy Solemn Passion past. Ascension. (In W. J. Blew's Collection, 1852-55, but not his) to his Hymns, &c, as above; and his wife Catherine Flood Jones (b. 1828) also contributed:— Pilgrim, bend thy footsteps on. Onward. to the same work. 1834 - 1900 Person Name: Uzziah C. Burnap Meter: 7.7.7.5 Composer of "PARACLETE" in The New Christian Hymnal Burnap ran a dry goods business in Brooklyn, though he graduated from the University of Paris with a music degree, and for 37 years played the organ at the Reformed Church in Brooklyn Heights. He was a prolific composer, and helped edit the following: Hymns of the Church, 1869 Hymns of Prayer and Praise, 1871 Hymns and Songs of Praise, 1874 --The Cyber Hymnal™ There is uncertainty about his middle name. Reynolds and the Library of Congress say it was Christopher. A contemporary obituary relied on by "The Cyber Hymnal™" says it was Cicero. It appears that there was another Uzziah C[icero] Burnap who lived (per LOC) 1794-1854.

Bertus Frederick Polman

1945 - 2013 Person Name: Bert Polman Meter: 7.7.7.5 Versifier of "If I Speak a Foreign Tongue" in Psalter Hymnal (Gray) Bert Frederick Polman (b. Rozenburg, Zuid Holland, the Netherlands, 1945; d. Grand Rapids, Michigan, July 1, 2013) was chair of the Music Department at Calvin College and senior research fellow for the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship. Dr. Bert studied at Dordt College (BA 1968), the University of Minnesota (MA 1969, PhD in musicology 1981), and the Institute for Christian Studies. Dr. Bert was a longtime is professor of music at Redeemer College in Ancaster, Ontario, and organist at Bethel Christian Reformed Church, Waterdown, Ontario. His teaching covered a wide range of courses in music theory, music history, music literature, and worship, and Canadian Native studies. His research specialty was Christian hymnody. He was also an organist, a frequent workshop leader at music and worship conferences, and contributor to journals such as The Hymn and Reformed Worship. Dr. Bert was co-editor of the Psalter Hymnal Handbook (1989), and served on the committees that prepared Songs for Life (1994) and Sing! A New Creation (2001), both published by CRC Publications.
