Chas. H. Marsh

1885 - 1956 Person Name: Charles H. Marsh Topics: Advenimiento Composer of "CHAPMAN" in Celebremos Su Gloria Born: April 8, 1886, Magnolia, Iowa. Died: April 12, 1956, La Jolla, California. Buried: Riverview Cemetery, Brawley, California. Marsh’s father was pastor of the Congregational Church in Magnolia, Iowa. His gift for the piano was evident at an early age, and after he graduated from high school, Wilbur Chapman asked him to play for the Winona Lake Chautauqua and Bible Conference in Indiana. He later taught at the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (1915-19) and the University of Redlands (1919-26). He studied music in France in the 1920’s, and became president of the European School of Music and Art in Fort Wayne, Indiana. From 1928 to 1932, he played the organ at the First Presbyterian Church. In 1932, he moved to Florida to become professor of organ at the University of Florida, Gainesville, and to serve as organist and choir director at the First Baptist Church. In 1935, he moved to California, where he worked as district supervisor for the Federal Music Project in San Diego until 1939. He also played the organ and directed the choir at St. James-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in La Jolla (1936-56). Thomas Helmore

1811 - 1890 Topics: Advenimiento Arranger of "VENI EMMANUEL" in Celebremos Su Gloria A graduate of Magdalen College, Oxford, England, Thomas Helmore (b. Kidderminster, Worcestershire, England, 1811; d. Westminster, London, England, 1890) was ordained a priest in the Church of England, but his main contribution to the church was in music. He was precentor at St. Mark's College, Chelsea (1842-1877), and master of the choristers in the Chapel Royal for many years. He promoted unaccompanied choral services and played an important part in the revival of plainchant in the Anglican Church. Helmore was involved in various publications of hymns, chants, and carols, including A Manual of Plainsong (1850) and The Hymnal Noted (with John Mason Neale). Bert Polman

Christoph von Schmid

Born at Dinkelsbuhl, Bavaria, Germany, the oldest of nine children and son of a civil servant who worked for the Teutonic Order, he received private lessons in the monastery and attended Catholic Latin school for two years, then attended the Dillingen high school, afterward tutoring for a wealthy family. He enrolled in the Episcopal University in Dillingen and studied philosphy for two years, then theology for four years. He was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1791. He served as parish vicar in Nassenbeuren, then chaplain at Seeg. In 1796, when he was placed as the head of a large school in Thannhausen, where he taught for many years. From 1816-1826 he was parish priest at Oberstadion in Wurttemberg. In 1826 he was appointed Canon of the Augsburg Cathedral. In 1832 he was administrator for the school system for Swabia and Neuburg. In 1837 he was raised by Bavarian King Ludwig I to personal nobility, a knight of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown. In old age he received numerous honors, and his 80th birthday was a public holiday in Augsburg. The University of Prague awarded him the title of Doctor of Theology. In addition to being an educator, he was also a prolific author and writer of children’s stories. He would often read his stories to the school children after classes. His stories became very popular and were translated into 24 languages. His general theme in story writing was to awaken a practical piety in children. Wrote 40 story books for children. He also wrote poetry. His most famous work: “A basket of flowers”. He died of cholera at Augsburg, Germany. In 1857 his autobiography was published. John Perry

Speros Demetrios Athans

Raised in the Greek Orthodox Church, Athans left home at age 15, after his father’s death. He spent two years on the island of Corfu, Greece, and two more in Egypt, then went to Great Britain, where he worked as a sailor. In 1903 he went to America, and during immigration processing, someone gave him a New Testament in Greek. A year later, he joined a Nazarene church in Chicago, Illinois. He then enrolled in a Bible school and university. While in school in California, he began to study Spanish and to work with the Latino community. In 1910 he decided to work in evangelism. Mary Macdonald

1789 - 1872 Person Name: Mary MacDonald, s. 19 Topics: Advenimiento Author of "Ved al niñito" in Celebremos Su Gloria Mary MacDougal MacDonald United Kingdom 1789-1872. Born at Ardtun, daughter of a farmer and Baptist cleric, Duncan MacDougal, northeast of Bunessan on the Ross of Mull, she was a Gaelic poet who lived at Cancan, Bunessan on Mull, Scotland. She never spoke English. She married Neil MacDonald and settled into a life as a crofter’s wife. While at her spinning wheel she passed time by singing hymns and poems, some of her own composition. She was a devout Baptist. Some of her hymns reached beyond her locality. The tune of her best known hymn (same tune as hymn: “Morning has broken”) was an old Scottish melody she attached to her lyrics that helped popularize the hymn, translated from the Gaelic in 1888 by Lachlan McBean of Scotland. His remans wer followed to the grave by three thousand persons; and at his death he left some music and his memoirs for publication. He was a very active composer; and among his operas are "Richard Coeur de Lion," "Le Postillon de Lonjumeau," "La Chalet," and many other popular operas.
