Leland B. Sateren

Sateren, a renowned composer and conductor, served as chairman of the Augsburg College Department of Music from 1950 to 1973, and as director of the Augsburg Choir from 1950 until his retirement in 1979. Survived by devoted wife, Pauline; sons, Terry, Mark (Judi), Roald (Shelley); daughter, Kirsten Bergherr (Jon); and grandchildren, Stacy Lindholm (Pete), Anne Sateren Burow (Matt), Ben Bergherr, Sara Bergherr, Erik Sateren, and Anders Sateren. Sateren is also survived by sisters, Margaret Trautwein, Norma (Ray) Anderson, Sylvia (Dean) Elness; and brother, Donald Sateren. The family would like to thank the staff at Redeemer Residence in Minneapolis for their concern and care. Memorial service at 11 am Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Augsburg College Foss Chapel. From Inside Augsburg:The campus community mourns the death of one of Augsburg’s music giants, composer and conductor Leland Sateren ‘35, who died on Saturday, Nov. 10, at the age of 94. His work includes more than 400 choral pieces he composed, which are sung in churches around the county. Sateren was passionate about Scandinavian choral music and introduced the work of many Scandinavian composers to American choral directors. Sateren graduated from Augsburg in 1935, and for the next 10 years, he attended graduate school at the University of Minnesota, was music director at the university’s KUOM radio station, and served in public service during World War II. In 1946, he returned to Augsburg; 4 years later, he became chair of the Music Department and director of the Augsburg Choir, which he led until his retirement in 1979. He is recognized for the excellence he brought to the Augsburg Choir and Augsburg’s choral arts program. During his long tenure, the choir developed a more contemporary sound and expanded its reach beyond churches into the community, and beyond the Midwest into Europe and international locations. Among Sateren’s many notable accomplishments are premieres of works with the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra and a commissioned piece at the United Nations to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Sateren was the first recipient of the F. Melius Christiansen Memorial Award for choral directors. In 2002 he was awarded the Weston Noble Choral Directors Award. He was also honored with the St. Olaf Medal, presented by King Olav V of Norway, and received two honorary doctorates. Sateren’s impact on the many hundreds of Augsburg students who sang in his choir was remarkable. Peter Hendrickson ’76, director of choral activities and current conductor of the Augsburg Choir, studied with Sateren. A number of other choir alumni who studied under Sateren currently sing in the Masterworks Chorale at Augsburg, also directed by Hendrickson. Sateren’s first wife, Eldora, died in 1968. He is survived by his second wife, Pauline. He is also survived by four siblings, all of whom attended Augsburg — Margaret Trautwein ’37, Norma Anderson ’46, Sylvia Elness ’48, and Donald. Sateren’s four children also all graduated from Augsburg — Terry ’68, Mark ’69, Kirsten Bergherr ’78, and Roald ’80.

Skinner Chávez-Melo

1944 - 1992 Scripture: 1 Corinthians 5:6 Harmonizer of "ID Y ENSEÑAD" in El Himnario Skinner Chavez-Melo, an organist, conductor and composer who was music director at the St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Manhattan, died on Saturday at New York Downtown Hospital. He was 47 years old and lived in Manhattan. He died of spinal cancer, said his brother, Juan Francisco. Mr. Chavez-Melo was born in Mexico City, but completed his musical studies in the United States, receiving degrees at Eastern Nazarene College and the Union Theological Seminary, and pursuing further studies at the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School. He toured internationally as an organist and conducted orchestras in Mexico, Brazil and the United States. As a composer, he wrote works for organ, choir and orchestra, and contributed hymn settings to several published hymnals, including those of the United Church of Christ and Yale University. He also lectured and presented workshops on Hispanic church music. Besides directing music at St. Rose, Mr. Chavez-Melo conducted the annual Singing Christmas Tree concerts at the South Street Seaport. http://www.nytimes.com/1992/01/28

Marty Haugen

b. 1950 Scripture: 1 Corinthians 5:7-8 Composer (stanzas) of "ARGENTINE SANTO (BREAK NOW THE BREAD)" in Glory to God Marty Haugen (b. 1950), is a prolific liturgical composer with many songs included in hymnals across the liturgical spectrum of North American hymnals and beyond, with many songs translated into different languages. He was raised in the American Lutheran Church, received a BA in psychology from Luther College, yet found his first position as a church musician in a Roman Catholic parish at a time when the Roman Catholic Church was undergoing profound liturgical and musical changes after Vatican II. Finding a vocation in that parish to provide accessible songs for worship, he continued to compose and to study, receiving an MA in pastoral studies at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul Minnesota. A number of liturgical settings were prepared for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and more than 400 of his compositions are available from several publishers, especially GIA Publications, who also produced some 30 recordings of his songs. He is composer-in-residence at Mayflower Community Congregational Church in Minneapolis and continues to compose and travel to speak and teach at worship events around the world. Emily Brink

Richard Proulx

1937 - 2010 Person Name: Richard Proulx, b. 1937 Scripture: 1 Corinthians 5:6-8 Composer of "MANNION" in With One Voice Richard Proulx (b. St. Paul, MN, April 3, 1937; d. Chicago, IL, February 18, 2010). A composer, conductor, and teacher, Proulx was director of music at the Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago, Illinois (1980-1997); before that he was organist and choirmaster at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in Seattle, Washington. He contributed his expertise to the Roman Catholic Worship III (1986), The Episcopal Hymnal 1982, The United Methodist Hymnal (1989), and the ecumenical A New Hymnal for Colleges and Schools (1992). He was educated at the University of Minnesota, MacPhail College of Music in Minneapolis, Minnesota, St. John's Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota, and the Royal School of Church Music in England. Walter L. Pelz

Pelz, b. 1926 Scripture: 1 Corinthians 5:7-8 Composer of "REGION THREE" in Lutheran Service Book Walter Pelz (b. 1926) was born in Chicago and educated at Concordia Teachers College, River Forest, Illinois (B.S. 1948), and Northwestern University ( M.Mus. 1951). After teaching music at Christ Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, and music in the public schools for fourteen years, he became minister of music at Christ Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota (1970). He has been a member of the music faculty of Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas, since 1969. Alec Wyton

1921 - 2007 Person Name: Alec Wyton (b. 1921) Scripture: 1 Corinthians 5:7-8 Composer (descant) of "SINE NOMINE" in Wonder, Love, and Praise Alec Wyton is described in Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians, by saying, "Wyton has brought together and caused to flourish three separate traditions: English church music, American church music and music from outside the churches." Also bringing together clergy and musicians of the Episcopal Church, he was the Coordinator of the Standing Commission on Church Music from 1974 to 1985; he was Minister of Music at St. Stephen's Church, in Ridgefield, Conn., from 1987 until his appointment as Minister of Music Emeritus in 2004; and he was Founder and Chairman of the Church Music Department of the Manhattan School of Music. Wyton is the award-winning ASCAP composer of over 100 published works; editor of the Anglican Chant Psalter; contributor of articles to professional journals; performer, teacher and lecturer: he is the complete musician. From 1954 to 1974 he was Organist and Master of the Choristers at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and Headmaster of the Cathedral Choir School. He taught at Union Theological Seminary in NYC and was Chairman of the Organ Department at Westminster Choir College, Princeton. Wyton was born in London in 1921. He earned degrees from the Royal Academy of Music and Oxford University. He came to the United States in 1950, working briefly in Dallas and St. Louis. Wyton died on March 18, 2007, after a prolonged illness. He has traveled throughout the US and Canada playing recitals, conducting workshops, master classes and hymn festivals stressing the coexistence in liturgy of great music and literature of the past with new and exciting works by artists of our time. --www.selahpub.com
