Hosanna, loud hosanna

Author: Jennette Threlfall (1821-1880) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Appears in 158 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Hosanna, loud hosanna, the little children sang, through city street and temple their joyful welcome rang. They shouted out their praises, to Christ, the children's friend, who welcomes all with blessing, whose love will never end. 2 From Olivet they followed a large exultant crowd, the victor palm branch waving, and chanting clear and loud; bright angels joined the chorus, beyond the cloudless sky, 'Hosanna in the highest! Glory to God on high!' 3 "Hosanna in the highest!" That ancient song we sing, for Christ is our Redeemer, the Lord of heaven our King. Oh, may we ever praise him with heart and life and voice, and in his blissful presence eternally rejoice. 'Twas on that night, when doomed to know

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 62 hymnals Lyrics: 1 'Twas on that night when doomed to know the eager rage of every foe, that night in which he was betrayed, the Saviour of the world took bread; 2 And, after thanks and glory given to him that rules in earth and heaven, that symbol of his flesh he broke, and thus to all his followers spoke: 3 'My broken body thus I give for you, for all; take, eat, and live: and oft the sacred rite renew that brings my wondrous love to view.' 4 Then in his hands the cup he raised, and God anew he thanked and praised, while kindness in his bosom glowed, and from his lips salvation flowed. 5 'My blood I thus pour forth,' he cries, 'to cleanse the soul in sin that lies; in this the covenant is sealed, and heaven's eternal grace revealed. 6 'With love to man this cup is fraught, let each partake the sacred draught; through latest ages let it pour in memory of my dying hour.' And can it be, that I should gain

Author: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Appears in 285 hymnals Lyrics: 1 And can it be, that I should gain an interest in the Saviour's blood? Died he for me, who caused his pain -- for me, who him to death pursued? Amazing love! how can it be that thou, my God, shouldst die for me? Amazing love! How can it be that thou, my God, shouldst die for me? 2 'Tis mystery all: the Immortal dies! Who can explore his strange design? In vain the firstborn seraph tries to sound the depths of love divine. 'Tis mercy all! Let earth adore; let angel minds inquire no more. 'Tis mercy all! Let earth adore; let angel minds inquire no more. 3 He left his Father's throne above, -- so free, so infinite his grace -- emptied himself of all but love, and bled for Adam's helpless race: 'tis mercy all, immense and free; for, O my God, it found out me! 'tis mercy all, immense and free; for, O my God, it found out me! 4 Long my imprisoned spirit lay, fast bound in sin and nature's night; thine eye diffused a quickening ray; I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; my chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed thee. My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed thee. 5 No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in him, is mine! Alive in him, my living Head, and clothed in righteousness divine, bold I approach the eternal throne, and claim the crown, through Christ, my own. Bold I approach the eternal throne, and claim the crown, through Christ, my own. Topics: Life in Christ Christ Incarnate - Passion and Death Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:7 Used With Tune: SAGINA

My song is love unknown

Author: Samuel Crossman (c. 1624-1683) Meter: 6.6.12.8.8 Appears in 127 hymnals Lyrics: 1 My song is love unknown, my Savior’s love to me, love to the loveless shown that they might lovely be. Oh, who am I, that for my sake my Lord should take frail flesh, and die? 2 He came from his blest throne salvation to bestow, but people scorned, and none the longed-for Christ would know. But O my Friend, my Friend indeed, who at my need his life did spend. 3 Sometimes they strew his way, and his strong praises sing, resounding all the day hosannas to their King. Then 'Crucify!' is all their breath, and for his death they thirst and cry. 4 Why, what hath my Lord done? What makes this rage and spite? He made the lame to run, he gave the blind their sight. Sweet injuries! Yet they at these themselves displease, and 'gainst him rise. 5 They rise, and needs will have my dear Lord made away; a murderer they save, the Prince of Life they slay. Yet cheerful he to suffering goes, that he his foes from thence might free. 6 In life, no house, no home my Lord on earth might have; in death, no friendly tomb but what a stranger gave. What may I say? Heaven was his home: but mine the tomb wherein he lay. 7 Here might I stay and sing, no story so divine; never was love, dear King, never was grief like thine! This is my Friend, in whose sweet praise I all my days could gladly spend. 'Take up your cross,' the Saviour said

Author: Charles William Everest (1814-1877) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 296 hymnals Lyrics: 1 'Take up your cross,' the Saviour said, 'if you would my disciple be; take up your cross with willing heart and humbly follow after me.' 2 Take up your cross; let not its weight fill your weak soul with vain alarm; his strength shall bear your spirit up, and brace your heart, and nerve your arm. 3 Take up your cross, nor heed the shame, and let your foolish pride be still: the Lord refused not even to die upon a cross, on Calvary's hill. 4 Take up your cross, then, in his strength, and calmly every danger brave; it guides you to a better home, and leads to victory o'er the grave. 5 Take up your cross and follow Christ, nor think till death to lay it down; for only those who bear the cross may hope to wear the glorious crown. We sing the praise of him who died

Author: Thomas Kelly (1769-1855) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 192 hymnals Lyrics: 1 We sing the praise of him who died, of him who died upon the cross; the sinner's hope though all deride -- for this we count the world but loss. 2 Inscribed upon the cross we see in shining letters, 'God is love'; he bears our sins upon the tree; he brings us mercy from above. 3 The cross! it takes our guilt away; and holds the fainting spirit up; it cheers with hope the gloomy day, and sweetens every bitter cup. 4 It makes the coward spirit brave, and nerves the feeble arm for fight; it takes its terror from the grave, and gilds the bed of death with light. 5 The balm of life, the cure of woe, the measure and the pledge of love, the sinner's refuge here below, the angels' theme in heaven above. Topics: Life in Christ Christ Incarnate - Passion and Death; Courage; Jesus cross Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:18-31 Used With Tune: WALTON (FULDA)
