Asahel Nettleton

1783 - 1844 Scripture: Acts 8:26-39 Arranger of "NETTLETON" in Celebremos Su Gloria Nettleton, Asahel, D.D., a well-known Connecticut evangelist, was born at North Killingworth, Connecticut, April 21, 1783, and educated at Yale College, graduating in 1809. In 1811 he was licenced to preach, receiving ordination in 1817. He never settled as a pastor with any congregation, but preached in Western Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York; in Virginia, 1827-28; and also in Great Britain in 1831. He died in 1843. His Memoirs, Sermons and Remains were published in 1844. Dr. Hatfield ascribes to him a hymn:— "Come, Holy Ghost, my soul inspire— This one great gift impart;" apparently on no other ground than that it appeared anonymously (as did many others) in his Village Hymns, in 1824, and has been traced no further. Nettleton's hymnological work centred in the compiling of his Village Hymns, from which more hymns of the older American writers have passed into English collections than from any other source. James Relly

1722 - 1778 Scripture: Acts 8:33 Author of "The Humiliation of Messiah" in Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs James Relly was born about 1722 at Jeffreston, Pembrokeshire, Wales, and died in 1778. He was converted to Christianity during the Great Awakening ushered in by George Whitefield. He worked under George Whitefield as a Calvinistic Methodist preacher and missionary. However, Whitefield and Relly separated ways over Relly's seemingly universalist teaching that all humanity was elect (i.e. saved) when Christ took the punishment for all sin when he died. He also departed from both the Calvinists and Methodists by taking the doctrine of Justification further, in teaching that believers no longer sin and the Law's sole purpose is to condemn humanity and point them to Christ. He was the mentor of John Murray, the founder of the Universalist Church of America. Relly along with his brother John wrote Christian Hymns, Poems and Spiritual Songs in 1758, which John Murray had republished in America in 1776. Brian A. Wren

b. 1936 Person Name: Brian Wren, 1936- Scripture: Acts 8:38 Author of "In Water We Grow" in Worship and Rejoice Brian Wren (b. Romford, Essex, England, 1936) is a major British figure in the revival of contemporary hymn writing. He studied French literature at New College and theology at Mansfield College in Oxford, England. Ordained in 1965, he was pastor of the Congregational Church (now United Reformed) in Hockley and Hawkwell, Essex, from 1965 to 1970. He worked for the British Council of Churches and several other organizations involved in fighting poverty and promoting peace and justice. This work resulted in his writing of Education for Justice (1977) and Patriotism and Peace (1983). With a ministry throughout the English-speaking world, Wren now resides in the United States where he is active as a freelance lecturer, preacher, and full-time hymn writer. His hymn texts are published in Faith Looking Forward (1983), Praising a Mystery (1986), Bring Many Names (1989), New Beginnings (1993), and Faith Renewed: 33 Hymns Reissued and Revised (1995), as well as in many modern hymnals. Thomas M. Westrup

1837 - 1909 Person Name: Tomás M. Westrup (1837-1909) Scripture: Acts 8:35-39 Vers. esp. of "¡Feliz el dia!" in Himnario Adventista del Séptimo Día Thomas Martin Westrup moved with his family from London to Mexico when he was fifteen years old. He translated hundreds of hymns and, along with his son, Enrique, published a three-volume hymnal Incienso Christiano. Carl Schalk

1929 - 2021 Person Name: Carl F. Schalk, 1929- Scripture: Acts 8:38 Composer of "STANLEY BEACH" in Worship and Rejoice Carl F. Schalk (b. Des Plaines, IL, 1929; d. 2021) is professor of music emeritus at Concordia University, River Forest, Illinois, where he taught church music since 1965. He completed graduate work at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri. From 1952 to 1956 he taught and directed music at Zion Lutheran Church in Wausau, Wisconsin, and from 1958 to 1965 served as director of music for the International Lutheran Hour. Honored as a Fellow of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada in 1992, Schalk was editor of the Church Music journal (1966-1980), a member of the committee that prepared the Lutheran Book of Worship (1978), and a widely published composer of church music. Included in his publications are The Roots of Hymnody in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (1965), Key Words in Church Music (1978), and Luther on Music: Paradigms of Praise (1988). His numerous hymn tunes and carols are collected in the Carl Schalk Hymnary (1989) and its 1991 Supplement. Bert Polman
