Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle

Author: Venantius Fortunatus, 530-609; John Mason Neale, 1818-66 Hymnal: Together in Song #331 (1999) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Lyrics: 1 Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle; of the mighty conflict sing: tell the triumph of the victim, to his cross your tribute bring. Jesus Christ, the world's Redeemer, from that cross now reigns as King. 2 When at length the appointed fullness of the sacred time was come, he was sent, the world's Creator, from the Father's heavenly home and was found in human fashion offspring of the Virgin's womb. 3 When the thirty years were ended which on earth he willed to see, willingly he meets his passion, born to set his people free; on the cross the Lamb is lifted, there the sacrifice to be. 4 There the nails and spear he suffers, vinegar and gall and reed; from his sacred body pierced blood and water both proceed: precious flood, which all creation from the stain of sin has freed. 5 Faithful cross, above all other, one and only noble tree, none in foliage, none in blossom, none in fruit your peer may be; sweet the wood and sweet the iron, and your load, most sweet is he. 6 Praise and honour to the Father, praise and honour to the Son, praise and honour to the Spirit, ever Three and ever One: One in might and One in glory while eternal ages run. Topics: Good Friday; Jesus Christ Passion and Cross; Passion Sunday Scripture: Colossians 1:19-20 Languages: English Tune Title: PANGE LINGUA

Sing, My Tongue, the Savior's Glory

Author: Venantius Fortunatus, 530-609; John M. Neale, 1818-1866 Hymnal: Journeysongs (3rd ed.) #384 (2012) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Lyrics: 1 Sing, my tongue, the Savior's glory; Tell his triumph far and wide; Tell aloud the famous story Of his body crucified; How upon the cross a victim, Vanquishing in death, he died. 2 Faithful cross, O Tree all beauteous! Tree all peerless and divine, Not a grove on earth can show us Such a flow'r and leaf as thine. Sweet the nails, and sweet the wood, Laden with so sweet a load! 3 Eating of the tree forbidden, Humans sank in Satan's snare, When our pitying Creator Did this second tree prepare; Destined, many ages later, That first evil to repair. 4 Such the order God appointed When for sin he would atone; To the serpent thus opposing Schemes yet deeper than his own; Thence the remedy procuring, When the fatal wound had come. 5 So when now at length the fullness Of the sacred time drew nigh, Then the Son, the world's Creator, Left his Father's throne on high; From a virgin's womb appearing, Clothed in our mortality. 6 Thus did Christ to perfect manhood In our mortal flesh attain: Then of his free choice he goes on To a death of bitter pain; And as lamb upon the altar Of the cross, for us is slain. 7 Lofty tree, bend down your branches, To embrace your sacred load; Oh, relax the native tension Of that all too rigid wood; Gently, gently bear the members Of your dying King and God. 8 Blessing honor everlasting, To th'immortal Deity; To the Father, Son, and Spirit, Equal praises ever be; Glory through the earth and heaven, Trinity in Unity. Amen.
