1866 - 1960 Person Name: T. O Chisholm Hymnal Number: 43 Author of "O to Be Like Thee!" in Favorites Number 5 Thomas O. Chisholm was born in Franklin, Kentucky in 1866. His boyhood was spent on a farm and in teaching district schools. He spent five years as editor of the local paper at Franklin. He was converted to Christianity at the age of 26 and soon after was business manager and office editor of the "Pentecostal Herald" of Louisville, Ky. In 1903 he entered the ministry of the M. E. Church South. His aim in writing was to incorporate as much as Scripture as possible and to avoid flippant or sentimental themes. Mrs. C. H. Morris

1862 - 1929 Person Name: Mrs. C. H. M. Hymnal Number: 73 Author of "Sweet Will of God" in Favorites Number 5 Lelia (Mrs. C.H.) Morris (1862-1929) was born in Pennsville, Morgan County, Ohio. When her family moved to Malta on the Muskingum River she and her sister and mother had a millinery shop in McConnelsville. She and her husband Charles H. Morris were active in the Methodist Episcopal Church and at the camp meetings in Sebring and Mt. Vernon. She wrote hymns as she did her housework. Although she became blind at age 52 she continued to write hymns on a 28-foot long blackboard that her family had built for her. She is said to have written 1000 texts and many tunes including "Sweeter as the years go by." Mary Louise VanDyke

Harold H. DeCou

1932 - 2008 Person Name: Harold DeCou Hymnal Number: 60 Arranger of "[He’s got the whole wide world in His hands]" in Favorites Number 5 Peoria - Harold H. DeCou, 76, of Peoria died at 7:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at his residence. He was born Oct. 7, 1932, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Harold H. and Kathrine Holbrook DeCou. He married Rose N. Layman on June 25, 1955, in Brookfield, Ill. She survives. Also surviving are his four sons, Harold H. (Nancy) DeCou III of Apple Valley, Calif., Mark T. DeCou of Peoria, Jonathan (Shari) DeCou of Muskegon, Mich., and Perry A. (Suiann) DeCou of Ramona, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He attended Temple University in Philadelphia. He was a concert artist (piano and organ), composer, arranger and orchestrator for 58 years. He served as church organist at Grace Presbyterian Church in Peoria from 1988 to 2001. He was a member of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Peoria. He is also an Honorary Fellow of Shenandoah Society Award. … Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery in Peoria. … Memorials may be made to Redeemer Presbyterian Church. J. E. Thomas

1860 - 1946 Person Name: J. E. T. Hymnal Number: 59 Author of "Hallelujah, We Shall Rise" in Favorites Number 5 J. Edmond Thomas Born: December 6, 1860, Calhoun County, Arkansas. Died: April 30, 1946, Fort Worth, Texas. Buried: Greenwood Cemetery, Fort Worth, Texas. Note: Some sources give his first name as John; his tombstone says James. Thomas was the husband of Courtney Lee Wigley and Pearl Hatchett (married 1923) In 1874, his family moved from their farm in Texas to Arkansas. His father died later that year. As the oldest son, he had his hands full supporting the family, but he managed to begin attending a vocal school at age 17, under Professor T. A. Bridges. He later studied under Horatio Palmer and George A. Goodrich. He began a full time music career in 1890, and with Franklin Eiland and John M. Greer, and helped found the Trio Music Company in Waco, Texas, in 1892. He went on to establish the Quartet Music Company in Fort Worth, Texas. Robert Harkness

1880 - 1961 Hymnal Number: 1 Author of "Sometime" in Favorites Number 5 After attending a revival meeting by Reuben Torrey and Charles M. Alexander, Harkness became Alexander’s pianist. He came to Christ shortly thereafter (on a bicycle, he said), and made several round the world tours with Torrey and Alexander. Harkness was especially well known for his program The Music of the Cross, and as the author of correspondence courses in hymn playing. He wrote over 2,000 hymns and Gospel songs in his lifetime. Person Name: Unknown Hymnal Number: 70 Author of "He Was Found Worthy" in Favorites Number 5 In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.
