J. H. Clark

1839 - 1888 Person Name: John Clark (1839-1888) Topics: Other Saints and Festivals Philip and James, Apostles; Other Saints and Festivals James the Apostle Author of "Soldiers, who are Christ's below" in Ancient and Modern Clark, John Haldenby, M.A., born at Chesterfield, Derbyshire, Jan. 28, 1839, and educated at the Grammar School there, and at St. John's College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1861. On taking Holy Orders, he became Curate of Barinby Moor and Fangfoss. After labouring in various parishes he became, in 1870, Vicar of West Dereham, Norfolk. Mr. Clark is known through his translation,"Soldiers, who are Christ's below." In 1880 he published The Marriage of Cana, and Other Verses; Lynn. It contains a few translations from the Latin, in addition to original verse. He died April 14, 1888. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

Frank DeVries

He grew up in Holland, emigrated to Canada in 1952, and in 1953 married Celia, his childhood sweetheart. He and his wife are the parents of six children, two of which are deceased. After obtaining Royal Conservatory degrees in theory and harmony, Frank and his wife moved to Grand Rapids where Frank graduated from Calvin College in 1962. Upon their return to Canada Frank taught at Pacific Christian School in Victoria, BC, and was principal at the John Knox Christian School in Wyoming, Ontario and the Houston and Vancouver Christian Schools both in BC. The author of two short novels (God. Noun or Verb? in 2006 and Frans in 2008) he has contributed articles to many Christian magazines and periodicals, and as well has composed and had published many children’s songs and hymns. Bertus Frederick Polman

Grand Rapids, Michigan, July 1, 2013) was chair of the Music Department at Calvin College and senior research fellow for the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship. Dr. Bert studied at Dordt College (BA 1968), the University of Minnesota (MA 1969, PhD in musicology 1981), and the Institute for Christian Studies. Dr. Bert was a longtime is professor of music at Redeemer College in Ancaster, Ontario, and organist at Bethel Christian Reformed Church, Waterdown, Ontario. His teaching covered a wide range of courses in music theory, music history, music literature, and worship, and Canadian Native studies. His research specialty was Christian hymnody. He was also an organist, a frequent workshop leader at music and worship conferences, and contributor to journals such as The Hymn and Reformed Worship. Dr. Bert was co-editor of the Psalter Hymnal Handbook (1989), and served on the committees that prepared Songs for Life (1994) and Sing! A New Creation (2001), both published by CRC Publications.
