William Shrubsole

1760 - 1806 Hymnal Number: 204 Composer of "[All hail the pow'r of Jesus' name]" in Songs of Calvary William Shrubsole (bap. 1760, d. 1806), organist. United Kingdom.When young, he sang in the choir at Canterbury Cathedral, He became organist at Bangor Cathedral, when he was dismissed for attending non-comformist meetings. He then became organist of Spa Fields Chapel, London, holding that post until his death. He was a successful teacher. He was an alto singer and sung at Westminster Abbey and Drury Lane churches. He knew Edward Perronet, who wrote the words to the hymn he composed music for. Perronet left Schrubsole property in his will. John Perry Not to be confused with W. Charles Burney

1726 - 1814 Person Name: C. Burney Hymnal Number: 99 Composer of "TRURO" in Songs of Calvary A music historian and composer, Burney attended Shrewsbury School and the Free School, Chester. He was apprenticed to Thomas Arne from 1744 to 1746. In 1749, he became organist at St. Dionis’ Backchurch, London. In 1751 moved to King’s Lynn, Norfolk, where he taught and played the organ. Graham was an ordained minister in the Wesleyan (Methodist) Church and served as District Superintendent in northern Georgia from around 1895 to about 1915. 1840 - 1882 Hymnal Number: 200 Author of "Not Half Has Ever Been Told" in Songs of Calvary Atchinson, Jonathan Bush, born at Wilson, New York, Feb. 17, 1840, and "licensed as a Methodist Preacher," Sept. 6, 1874. Of his hymns the following are the best known:— 1. Behold the stone is rolled away. [Easter.] This was Mr. Atchinson's first hymn. It appeared in the Sunday School Times, Dec. 1874. It is not in use in Great Britain. 2. Fully persuaded, Lord, I believe. [Faith.] Written in 1874 or 1875, and first published in Gospel Hymns, No. 1. It is given in I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs & Solos, No. 149, with music by W. F. Sherwin. 3. I have read of a beautiful city. [Heaven.] Written about the same time as the former, and published in Gospel Hymns. It is given in I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs & Solos, No. 403, with music by O. F. Presbrey. 4. O crown of rejoicing that's waiting for me. [The Reward .] This hymn is also in I. D. Ada Blenkhorn

1858 - 1927 Hymnal Number: 83 Author of "Speak to Me" in Songs of Calvary Ada Jane Blenkhorn Canada 1858-1927 Born in Cobourg, Ontario, the 10th of 11 children, she emigrated with her family to the U.S. In 1884 and settled in Cleveland, OH.. She was raised a Methodist, and began writing hymn lyrics at age 34. A prolific writer of hymn lyrics, she was about to give it up when a friend encouraged her to continue, telling her some soul might be saved by a hymn she would write. She worked for many years as secretary to her brother, Henry's, real estate company. After his death in 1923, she became president of the company. She never married. John Perry

Anthony Wilhelm Boehm

1673 - 1722 Person Name: A. W. Boehm Hymnal Number: 107 Author of "Of Him Who Did Salvation Bring" in Songs of Calvary Anthony Wilhelm Boehm Germany 1673-1722 He was a German Lutheran royal chaplain at St. James Palace in London, having been educated at Lemgo and Hameln and at the University of Halle. He was known as an author and translator. In 1698 he was called to Arolsen to educate the t two daughters of the Count of Woldeck, but his religious opinions were not acceptable to some of the clergy there, and the count let him go. He took an offer to teach for German families in London.At this time he was frail and on a small income. After studying English, he opened a school in 1702. When Prince George of Denmark, at the request of Queen Anne, introduced the “Book of Common Prayer” into his Lutheran Chapel, Boehm was recommendedby his friend Heinrich Ludolf, Secretary to Prince George, to be assistant chaplain. He was to read the prayers, as the chaplain found them too hard to read. In 1705 he became chaplain to the prince. In 1712 he translated and published “Arndt's True Christianity”. He died at 48 in 1722 and ws buried in the Greenwich churchyard, where a monument was erected to his memory. Boehm was a prolific author. Besides works in German, he published translations and editions of other authors, including six treatises on Christianity and other manuscripts, published in 1731 by Professor Johann Jakob Rambach of Halle University.
