Edward Husband

1843 - 1908 Person Name: E. Husband Hymnal Number: 123 Composer of "[O Jesus, Thou art standing]" in The Junior Song and Service Book Husband, Edward was educated at St. Aidan's College, Birkenhead. Taking Holy Orders in 1866, he was successively Curate of Atherstone and Folkestone; and in 1878 Vicar of St. Michael and All Angels, Folkestone. In 1874 Mr. Husband published The Mission Hymnal, in which appeared his hymns as follows:— 1. Alas! poor world, I loved thee long. Rest in Jesus. 2. And dost Thou ask me, dearest Lord. Christ's Invitation, " Follow Me." 3. I must have Jesus only. Jesus only desired 4. Sweet Blood, dear ransom of our souls. The Blood of Jesus. These hymns are very simple, earnest, and impassioned: and bear a great resemblance to Facer's compositions. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

Rossiter W. Raymond

1840 - 1918 Hymnal Number: 124 Author of "Far Out On the Desolate Billow" in The Junior Song and Service Book Raymond, Rossiter Worthington, PH.D., was b. in Cincinnati, Ohio, April 27,1840. He graduated at Brooklyn Polytechnic, 1858, and also studied in Germany. He served in the Civil War of 1861-4 with the grade of Captain. Since then he has practised in New York as a consulting mining engineer. He was editor of the American Journal of Mining, and is a contributor to scientific literature. He has also written stories for children, a Paraphrase of Job, and some fugitive poetry. His hymns in common use include:— 1. Far out on the desolate billow. [God everywhere.] Written for the German tune, "Ich weiss nicht was soil es bedeuten," and published in The Plymouth Hymnal, 1894. 2. Morning red, Morning red. [Easter.] Written to the tune" Morgenroth," a German battle-song, and published in the American Book of Praise. 3. Now rest, ye pilgrim host. [Reviewing the Past.] This hymn is dated 1879, and was written for the 50th anniversary oi the Brooklyn Sunday School Union. It was included in The Plymouth Hymnal, 1891, No. 509, and, after revision by the author, in Sursum Corda, 1898, and other collections. 4. 0 Thou Who art inspiring. [Submission.] Appeared in The Plymouth Hymnal, 1894, No. 635, and later in other collections. 5. The God Who spann'd the heavens above. [Courage in Conflict.] "Written for my Sunday School, to be sung to the tune of the German patriotic song, ‘Der Gott, der Eisen wachsen liess' (by Arndt, p, 79, ii.), of which my first line is an evident and intentional imitation, though the remainder is not" (Author's MS.). It was published in The Book of Praise, the Sursum Corda, 1898, and others. It is sometimes attributed to "J. Clark,” but in error. 6. There dwelt in old Judaea. In Allon's Children's Worship, 1878. Of the above Nos. 1, 2, 5 are in W. B. Bradbury's Clarion, 1867. Dr. Raymond is a Congregationalist, and is associated with the Plymouth Church, Brooklyn. [Rev. L. F. Ada Blenkhorn

1858 - 1927 Hymnal Number: 33 Author of "There Is a Song So Sweet" in The Junior Song and Service Book Ada Jane Blenkhorn Canada 1858-1927 Born in Cobourg, Ontario, the 10th of 11 children, she emigrated with her family to the U.S. In 1884 and settled in Cleveland, OH.. She was raised a Methodist, and began writing hymn lyrics at age 34. A prolific writer of hymn lyrics, she was about to give it up when a friend encouraged her to continue, telling her some soul might be saved by a hymn she would write. She worked for many years as secretary to her brother, Henry's, real estate company. After his death in 1923, she became president of the company. She never married. John Perry

Died: May 23, 1923, Scarborough, Yorkshire, England. Carter attended Worcester College, Oxford (BA & MA 1871). He was ordained deacon in 1871, and priest in 1872. He served as Curate of Christ Church, Ealing, Middlesex (1871-75); Vicar choral of York Minster (1875); Rector of St. Martin, Micklegate, York (1877-82); and Vicar of St. Michael Belfry, York (1882). Adelaide M. Plumptre

1871 - 1948 Hymnal Number: 73 Author of "Keep Thyself Pure" in The Junior Song and Service Book Plumptre, Adelaide Mary (Wynne Willson). (Hanborough, England, January 22, 1871--September 1948, Toronto, Ontario). Anglican. Studied, then taught, at Somerville College, Oxford, before marrying (1901) Henry Pemberton Plumptre and coming to Canada, where he became chaplain of Wycliffe College, Toronto (1901-1903) and curate of St. George's, Montreal (1903-1908) before returning briefly to England. In 1909 he came back to Toronto as rector of St. James' Cathedral, succeeding Edward Ashurst Welch; after his retirement in 1935, the couple lived on in Toronto, where Adelaide Plumptre published a pamphlet of hymns just before her death. "Keep thyself pure!", which the Book of Common Praise (1908 and 1938) included, dates from 1907, when the temperance movement in Canada was reaching its height. --Hugh D. McKellar, DNAH Archives
